So when was the last time that you went on a phone diet?
Seriously? You don't know what a phone diet is? Really? Are you kidding me? Okay I have
a confession to make. I didn't know what a phone diet was either until a couple of years
ago and all a phone diet is, it's just a few simple tips to help you use your phone
more efficiently, more effectively and more productively whilst at the same time
feeling calm, relaxed, peaceful, in control and getting in a great night's sleep. Now
these three tips have been scientifically proven to work and when
you implement them you're going to see the difference in your life. So phone
diet tip number one is : do not check into your phone in the first hour of the
morning you wake up. Now that means that when you wake up you can't just look at
your phone and check out your Twitter and your Facebook and your Instagram and
reply to your emails and sit in bed whilst you go through your text messages and
your Whatsapps. No that totally gets you off to a wrong start in your day.
Why? Because it puts you in reactive mode. You see when you are reacting to
all of those posts and messages and emails you are responding or reacting to other
people's agendas and that means that you don't own your morning, you don't own
your morning to get yourself into the state to get ready for the day ahead and
when you start your morning in that kind of a state where you reacting to other
people's agenda then you're not gonna accomplish what you want and it's just going to put you
into a frenzy early in the morning, it's going to put you in a state of reaction, it's
going to put you into a state of stress because when your mind is thinking of
its to-do list and how little time you have to do it and you shut out that part
of your brain that is receptive to being creative. So first thing in the morning
to look at your phone is not a good idea. In the first hour of the morning you need to spend it
getting yourself in a state where you gonna actually go out for the day and create and
get ready and putting yourself where you're going to go and crush the day
ahead. So first hour of the morning no checking into your phone. Second tip for
your phone diet is : In the last hour before you go to sleep, that means one hour
before you go to sleep you, need to put away your phone put away your smartphone
because here's what it does : the light from your smartphone it affects that
part of your brain which shuts off. If you are checking in to your tweets or
your emails or your Instagram or you're Facebooking or you're Whatsapping right
before you go to bed and you're lying in bed and you're doing that then you're setting
off a chemical called dopamine in your brain which is the same chemical that is
found in drugs which gets us all happy and excited and that's what happens, you see
all of these tweets or these posts and these messages and your brain lights up
because now it's excited and it wants to respond and all of a sudden you find
yourself being unable to sleep and also what it does is even if you are able to
sleep, part of your brain is semi conscious, it's not able to get proper
rest, it's not able to get into the rhythms off sleep that it needs to get the
necessary recovery and rest of what it requires so that now affects your sleep
at night and when you wake up in the morning and you don't feel so refreshed
and so relaxed as you should be and that's what happens when you check in
to your phone in the last hour of the night because it doesn't give your brain
the proper recovery and rest period that it needs and it sets off your brain into
reactive mode and gets all excited and you're releasing dopamine and next
thing you know you can't fall asleep or you're not going to have the restful sleep
that you do require. Third phone diet tip is and this one's really big because
whenever you go out to a restaurant, whenever you go to a mall, whenever you
go out to anywhere actually and you see some people interacting and instead of
having an interaction where people are fully connected and fully engaged with
each other, you see one person who is or maybe even all of the people in that
interaction either half engaged with the people around them and half engaged
with the cellphone in front of them and that causes people to not deepen and
strengthen their relationships and that is true for business, that is true
for your personal relationships, it is true for all of your relationships, all
human relationships because we all crave the 100% attention of the person that we
are with and if you're in business then you know that people do business with
the people that they know, like and trust and even if they know you, but if you are
checking in on your phone whilst you in a human interaction with another person
it doesn't really feel like they gonna build up a liking for you or as much of
a liking for you to want to do business with you because you haven't given them the
reason to make them feel as if they are the center of your world at that point
in time and the same is true for your personal relationships. When you're with
someone, with your family or your friends, whoever it is, when you're in front of
another human being they deserve 100% of your attention, they deserve 100% of your
respect, they deserve all of your energy in that given moment of time and that's how we
develop meaningful, deep, loving relationships is to give all of our
energy, all of our focus to the person in front of us at that point in time and
not giving half attention to the person in front of us and half of our attention to
our phone or in some people's cases ninety percent of their time or
ninety percent percent of their attention on the phone and maybe about 10 or 20 percent of the attention and
their focus to the person standing in front of them. So those are three tips
that have helped me with this phone diet and those are three tips that are
scientifically proven to make you thirty percent more productive in a week and
also not only improve your productivity but make you feel more in control
because when you own your - when you own your smartphone and you know how to deal
with it instead of reacting to it every time you hear a ping or a message or
your cell phone ring then you're gonna feel a lot more alive, you're gonna feel a lot
more in control and you're gonna feel like you have more time because now you are the
person who owns the phone as opposed to the phone owning the person which is
like most people that we see around today. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not
saying technology is a bad thing. I love technology! In fact if it wasn't for
technology we wouldn't be having this conversation right now and I think it is
the most amazing invention in the world, it's just a matter of being able to use
it correctly and that's what this is about. The phone diet is about using your
phone in the way that it's supposed to be used. Using it in a smart way right? That's
why they called smart phones so using it in a smart way and using it to improve
the quality of your life and not take away from the quality of your life and
use it to deepen and strengthen your relationships and create meaningful
connections, yes, online or interactively when it's supposed to, but, using it to
make our life simpler and more fulfilling and easier and when used in the
right way that's what's gonna happen. So let me know how does it work for you
because I know this may sound simple but it's not gonna be easy the first time
you try it or the first time you do it because what I'd like you to do is give
yourself a full week of doing this. Give yourself a full week and then let me
know your results. Post down below what are your challenges,
what are your successes, what did you find easy, what was your results from
this phone diet so let me know. I'd love to hear from you and I'd love to hear
about your successes and even if it's your challenges, let me know. Let's get through
it, let's work out a way because whatever you're going through or have been through, someone
else has already been through and overcome and let's figure it out, let's
go out there, let's show the world that we can use our phones in the way that it's
meant to and we don't need to be plugged in to our phones and dictated to all of
the time and let me know. Comment below, let me
know what your successes and your challenges are and look forward to hearing from you.
Until then have an amazing day. Go out there, be awesome and live fully and
be vibrant and just have an amazing time being you and be positive. The world
needs more positivity in it's space right now. So look forward to hearing from you and see you then!
