50 years of British Orienteering: past and future - Duration: 7:37.Katherine: British Orienteering is 50 years old.
To celebrate, we're taking a look back at how it was when it all began.
And we'll also be looking into the future
to see what orienteering could look like in 50 years time.
But first here's Carol McNeill with how British Orienteering began, 50 years ago today.
Carol: Scotland and England decided to join
because then they could enter a national team.
So I went up to the British Championships in Hamsterley Forest.
That was the first British Championships.
It was really good having people like Chris Brasher
who's a famous BBC journalist and wrote in the Observer
and he did quite a lot of articles selling orienteering.
John Disley, international steeplechaser. He had been in orienteering
oh, like forever.
Ian: There was Gordon Pirie running, now that's a big name
if you've got a chap who'd been a very successful Olympic
runner, World Record holder.
Carol: There would be newsletters sent out by post. No computers then.
And you'd decide to enter and enter it by post or enter on the day.
But at the start, you'd then have master maps
where you had to copy your course from the right master map on to your map
and there was lots of skill attached to this.
Ian: And you wanted to be off before the next person on the next minute was coming.
Well, in many cases you couldn't possibly
or it was very very difficult to copy the things accurately down.
Katherine: Maps have changed beyond recognition.
Ian: The mapping was very simple.
You simply went out and bought a 2 1/2 inch map
an then you were going to get a black and white photocopy of that.
We'd used a big depression in an area
but it wasn't marked on the map.
But where it was, you just drew the circle on the master map and that was it.
Carol: It was sort of doctored up and sometimes they'd enlarge it and put a scale on it.
And it was a sort of work of art.
'76, when the World Championships were in Scotland
Sue and Robin Harvey mapped for that World Championships
and then, their expertise developed, in mapping
and so then mapping really took off again in the mid 70s.
Dave: I can imagine that mapping will change in similar ways as it has in the past 40 or 50 years
and that's how much data is available to the cartographer, the surveyor.
If we look at urban mapping nowadays, we've got Google Streetview
lots of Ordnance Survey data, Lidar data,
and you can gather so much data to make a map.
You can almost produce a pretty good map without ever going out into the field.
I can see that changing into the forest environment
so you would be able to gather a lot of data
without ever going into the field.
And then with the advent of drones and things like that
I think there's a good chance the surveyor may never leave their office.
Katherine: Clothing has advanced in line with fashion.
Ian: Initially when people started, they'd just wear any old clothes
and you realised very quickly that it was advisable to run with studs
so quite a lot of people would have started with football boots
or hockey boots initially.
Carol: It was very loose and it was nylon.
You know, we picked up lots of tips from the Scandinavians.
You know, we'd go over to Scandinavia in the summer
and see what they were wearing, and think "oh that looks good,
we'll get some of that", and they were all a bit baggy.
And people would make their own with pockets for their whistles
and pen for the master maps.
Ian: If you're looking at shoes in the past, previously they were very uncomfortable
'cos they tend to be very heavy, no support,
there was stitching all over the place.
But for the future, I think we're going to go into just a mixture of
very lightweight, breatheable fabric, with lightweight mesh.
Katherine: Punching is now much easier.
Carol: In Sweden they were using these little stamps
and they were like self-inking stamps.
Ian: And you got a set if you were organising an event.
You press them down and it would have left a, in theory,
an indelible mark on your card.
Carol: And then that was the precursor of the pin punches.
The pin punches, I mean they lasted a long time
and we still use them for some events.
Martin: And then electronic punching was introduced about 20 years ago
and now for the first time at the JK, everybody
that's 60% of the participants are using the new contactless cards
and contactless punching is the future of orienteering.
Katherine: Paper results are out. It's all electronic now.
Carol: They'd put your name on a label and then stick it on
a slip of wood which then all had hooks so that they could
change the positions as people came in.
At big events, you'd leave an envelope
with your name and address on and
then the art of the organiser, or one of the skills
that people used to like to do was to get the results
photocopied and into the envelopes on the night of the event.
Ian: It was a major job.
The formal results you wouldn't get for
perhaps a week, sometimes two weeks or three weeks
after the event.
Martin: In terms of the future, maybe a little bit more effort
will go into GPS tracking, to try and make that more accessible at more events.
Katherine: The future is looking exciting.
Judith: I think the future of British Orienteering is being able to
go on adapting to some things that we maybe realise are here now
but things probably we can't even dream about yet.
Mike: I think orienteering's got a really strong future.
I think our challenge is that we rely tremendously on volunteers
without those volunteers there is no sport.
We intend spending quite a lot of time developing our
orienteers over the next 4-8 years.
Judith: I think one of the things that we will have is more variety.
I think the busy lives the younger generation have at the moment
mean that their every week orienteering
they don't want to travel too far
they've got too many other things going on.
So we need local hotspots with lots of local orienteering.
Carol: People just loved making it good for everybody,
I mean, like they still do, you know, we just
like making it into the best sport that we have.
Katherine: So there you have it, a little insight
into what British Orienteering has looked like
over the past 50 years and a bit of a guess
about what it might be doing in the future.
Let's celebrate this 50th golden milestone
and look forward to the next 50 years.

Alex Jones Secretly Records Megyn Kelly Interview Reminds World Why You Should Never Interview Alex - Duration: 5:29.Alex Jones Secretly Records Megyn Kelly Interview, Reminds World Why You Should Never Interview Alex Jones
As youve likely heard by now, a controversial interview between Megyn Kelly and Alex Jones will air on Kellys new NBC newsmagazine Sunday night.
If youre unfamiliar with Jones, buckle in, for this mans batsh-t insanity cannot be exaggerated, and its difficult to know where to start when describing a loon so deeply mired in far-right conspiracy theories that even the folks at Breitbart prefer to keep their distance.
Its unfortunate that theres not an app (that we know of) that lets you find the nearest flakka or bath salts dealer in you neighborhood, because just hanging out outside and conducting exit interviews with some of the patrons would give you a good idea of Jones belief system.
Jones espouses the usual nut job conspiracy theories (9/11 was an inside job; global warming is a Chinese hoax; were all basically living in the Matrix thanks toa global, George Soros-funded network of Blue Pill-munching cucks, etc.
), but he also takes his escaped mental patient routine several steps further with some beliefs that are just *kisses fingertips like an Italian chef* deliciously bonkers:.
Jones believes a network of humanoid lizards runs our global banking system; he thinks that Hillary Clinton is mass murderer who has personally chopped up bodies; hes a proponent of the debunked #Pizzagate child sex ring theory (in which he also believes Clinton is involved); and most disgustingly of all, Jones believes the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre was faked in order to put pressure on anti-gun control lobbyists.
Yes, Jones looks at the grieving parents of 20 6- and 7-year-old children who were murdered in their classroom and believes theyre faking it as part of a left wing plot to cripple the NRA.
Its a revolting belief thats sent even some of Jones most unhinged followers scrambling for saner pastures. But it didnt stop Kelly from giving Jones a platform on a major network in primetime, and therein lies the problem.
Already Kelly has already lost advertisers and been fired from a speaking engagement at a benefit for Sandy Hook families. And it doesnt look as though the backlash will be letting up any time soon.
Part of the problem is that Kelly doesnt seem to have done her research on Jones. If she had, she might have known that he recently called her an old tranny. globalist during an interview with Joe Rogan.
And she also might have known about his bad habit of stabbing fellow journalists in the back.
Jones revealed this week that he secretly recorded his interview with Kelly and that he plans to release it in order to undermine what he feels will be a heavily-edited hit piece put out by NBC.
Jones says his recording will expose Kelly as a fraud:.
"God, she was like, 'I want to get steaks with you, I'm obsessed with you, oh my God,' wiggling around in her seat. It was all crap," he explained in a recent YouTube clip.
"I knew it was all a lie. I said Sandy Hook happened, and she wouldn't even put it in the promo pieces.. So we're going to release, oh yeah, we're going to release the pre-interview.
And then when they put their fraud out on Sunday — which I've asked them not to air because they're misrepresenting who I am and saying I'm as bad as Saddam Hussein, or Jeffrey Dahmer, or Charles Manson — we've got the whole interviews here … We've got it all … It's all going to come out.".
Yes, Megyn Kelly has finally managed to move on from her bizarre feud with Donald Trump, and now shes being targeted by the Internets Number One Nut Job, Alex Jones.

Tourette's at Work (Should you tell your boss?) - Duration: 2:10.Hello YouTubers! Welcome to my channel. I'm so glad you dropped by. Ah... this has
been one interesting week. My employer came into my office and said she wanted
to speak with me, and she mentioned that she could hear the noises I was
making, the sounds I was making, and that she could see some of the tics.
And, she wanted to know how she could be how she could (ticcing) how she could be a support.
I thought that was nice. I was trying to...I knew that I should have brought it
up to her. She is my employer and I should have brought it up to her. But, she
brought it up to me. And um...she was very nice about it. And she just wanted to
know how she could be, how she could be a support and that was very nice. And
she said she was speaking to me not as my employer, but as my friend. And I
appreciate that! So sometimes (ticcing) sometimes things work out. I've just gotten home
and things were very active today. Very active! And but ...you know, it is what it is.
It is what it is. So I'm learning to, I'm learning (ticcing) to deal with it and that's
what's going on. You can stay up to date by subscribing to my channel and you'll
always know when the next video has come out. And I will try to keep you informed
of what's going on. All right?
So, does anyone on the job know that you
have tourette's? Maybe you confided in one of your
coworkers, but no one else knows? Have you told your boss?
Is it even necessary to tell your boss? Are you able to suppress your tics
on the job and therefore really no need to tell anyone? I would like to hear from
you. Let me know in the comments below.

Fivefold - Nothing More To Say [HD | Lyrics] - Duration: 3:10.The walls are getting thicker with time
And I don't think we have the chance to rewind this
Story just like all the others
Feeling like I'm smothered
Need some room to breathe before I suffocate
So curse my name
I'll take it in
I hurt you once
And I'll do it again
There's nothing more to say
'Cause it's already been said
Need to get away from the demons in my head
When it's said and done you won't remember my face
Get away I can't take this sting
It's time I need to break this
Block it out and try to pretend
But tell me is this thought what you imagined
You and I
All we ever do is fight
I can't take another night
There's just some things that we can't ever make right
So curse my name
I'll take it in
I hurt you once
Oh you know I'll do it again
There's nothing more to say
'Cause it's already been said
Need to get away from the demons in my head
When it's said and done
You won't remember my face
Get away I can't take this sting
It's time I need to break this
I'm sorry there's no fixing what's been broken
I am living in your world of happy endings
I think it's time that you just walk away
There's nothing more to say
'Cause it's already been said
Need to get away from the demons in my head
When it's said and done
You won't remember my face
Get away I can't take this sting
It's time I need to break this
So get away
So get away
