A yeast starter is the go-to method to produce a large population of healthy and ready-to-perform yeast.

In this video, we'll show you how to create one.

Add a stir bar and a liter of water to a flask and heat it to boiling.

We use and recommend a double boiler method for heating the flask.

To set this up, you'll need a pot big enough to hold the flask with about two inches of water at the bottom.

Place the flask into water and apply heat

In this process, the heat source does not directly touch the glass.

Borosilicate glass - like that found in an Erlenmeyer flask - is the only glass that it is safe to heat and cool wort rapidly in.

Do not use standard glass jugs or jars if you are using this method.

Once the boil is reached, remove the flask from the heat.

Measure out four ounces - or approximately half a cup - of dry malt extract.

Add the proper amount of yeast nutrient, which varies by manufacturer.

Then pour the mixture into your flask

The steam from the flask may cause the powder to get very sticky,

so be prepared to scrape out the last bit of the mixture from your measuring cup.

Give the solution a good swirl to mix everything up before returning the flask to the pot.

Set a timer to boil the wort for 10 minutes.

This should produce a starter with a specific gravity of 1.040.

Prepare an ice bath to cool the wort.

Using aluminum foil, cover the spout of the flask to create a seal to keep bacteria out of your mixture.

Turn off the burner, and carefully transfer the flask into the ice bath,

giving it another swirl to ensure the contents are mixed well.

Then proceed to cool the wort to 75 degrees.

At this point, we sanitize the yeast packet, as well as the scissors used to open it.

When the desired temperature is reached, transfer the flask to a stir plate.

Locate the stir bar, and make sure it is placed above the magnet in the center of the stir plate.

Now it's time to pitch your yeast to the solution.

Yeast starters are generally used for liquid yeast.

We used White Labs California Ale WLP 001 for this.

Reapply the aluminum foil to the opening of the flask and turn on the stir plate.

The magnet in the stir plate will spin the stir bar,

creating a vortex that will aerate the wort, which is essential for yeast to grow.

Stirred starters have a tenfold increase in cell counts over a non stirred starter,

because stirring keeps the yeast in suspension, and in constant contact with nutrients.

There are two common ways to move forward.

You can let the starter ferment for 12 to 18 hours, then aerate and pitch your starter to the full batch.

This is done for higher gravity beers where you're trying not to spend extra money on two pitches of yeast,

and ensures the vitality of the yeast that you use.

Use an external magnet to hold the stir bar in place so you don't pitch it into your wort.

Give the solution one final swirl, and pitch it into your fermenter.

The other common method is to cold crash yeast for 18 to 36 hours.

This allows separation to occur, so that a yeast cake develops at the bottom of the flask.

This method is ideal for light beers where flavor could be disrupted.

Sanitize your siphon and remove the majority of the starter wort out of the container, leaving the yeast cake at the bottom.

Use a magnet to immobilize the stir bar, and stir the remaining solution until the yeast is detached from the bottom of the flask.

Once the yeast is loose, it is ready to pitch to your full batch.

Using a yeast starter is one of the most dramatic improvements

you can make to your brewing process to ensure high-quality beer.

5 Reasons To NOT Buy Fortnite - Duration: 4:38.

Hey everyone, Aaron here with A/C Gaming.

And today, we're looking at Fortnite in a different light.

And let me assure you: I do NOT hate Fortnite.

I don't.

In fact, I hope to follow-up this video with another video in which I go over 5 reasons why you SHOULD buy Fortnite.

So be sure to subscribe so you can easily find that video once it is posted.

But, this video, is not for me to rant and rave about what I dislike about the game thus far.

Instead, this video is to give YOU an idea of some of the negative aspects of the game in Early Access.

Believe me, I actually DO enjoy playing Fortnite.

But I realize the game is not without its flaws.

So I want to inform you of some of those flaws

So YOU will have a better idea of whether or not to purchase the game.

Alright, so reason #1 as to why you should NOT buy Fortnite

Is if you or someone you know has a prolonged HISTORY OF SEIZURES.

Believe me, I'm not trying to be funny or anything like that - I am being completely serious.

There are times when I'm playing Fortnite, and things get TOO intense.

There's a little too much light being thrown around, and I have to just look away from the screen for a few seconds and give my eyes a break.

Now, this excessive amount of flashing lights could trigger a seizure

In someone playing or watching the game be played.

So, if you have a history of seizures,

Fortnite probably isn't a good choice for you.

If someone you know has a history of seizures, and they're thinking about whether or not to get the game,

You might want to offer them a friendly warning, and inform them that Fortnite might not be a good option for them.

Reason #2 is REPETITIVE GAMEPLAY.

Now, you could also argue that games like: "Dead by Daylight" and "Minecraft"

are also overly repetitive.

But those games are still pretty fun to play, especially if you're playing them with friends.

In a similar way, Fortnite is somewhat repetitive -

you gather resources,

you complete missions,

you build a fort,

and then you fight off waves of zombies.

But, even still, the game is still somewhat fun to play,

but repetitive gameplay is definitely something to keep in mind.

Reason #3 is a HUGE reason why you should NOT buy Fortnite!

And that is: the game is still only in Early Access.

A lot of people think the game has been fully released, but it hasn't yet.

Fortnite is scheduled for a 2018 release.

So a lot will likely change between now and the official release of the game.

Plus, Epic Games has made it clear that they want Fortnite to eventually become "a free-to-play game."

So holding off on buying Fortnite may be a good option if you want to save some money.

Reason #4 is BUGS & GLITCHES.

Remember, this game is still in Early Access,

which means that there are A LOT of bugs in the game.

Granted, Epic Games is doing a great job of working through those bugs -

Fortnite even has an in-game menu option where you can offer feedback, suggestions, or report bugs directly to the developers.

However, if you wait for the game's official release in 2018,

there will likely be less bugs in the game.

The fifth reason why NOT to purchase Fortnite

is if the tower defense and survival game genres are

NOT YOUR STYLE.

I have to say, though, I've noticed that Fortnite has a slight hint of a role-playing aspect to the game as well.

So, that might attract any RPG fans out there.

But, the basic function of the game is for you to:

GATHER resources, BUILD a fort, and DEFEND it against waves upon waves of zombies.

Well, I just gave you 5 reasons why NOT to buy Fortnite.

And you might think by now that I really don't like Fortnite.

But, that's not necessarily the case.

In fact, I hope that our next video will look at why you SHOULD buy Fortnite.

So be sure to SUBSCRIBE so that you know when that video is live.

I'm Aaron with A/C Gaming.

Thanks so much for watching.

Until next time.

The Major Social Media Mistake Businesses Need to Avoid - Duration: 2:35.

What's up guys it is Justin Kerby from Cave Social and today I wanted to talk to you really

quickly about our number one thing not to do on social media.

So normally we talk about things we want to see businesses doing on social, ways to market

themselves today I'm talking about what not to do.

And that number one thing not to do, this may sound cliche, but it's don't bite of more

than you can chew.

There's three reasons why we don't want to see businesses bite off more than they can

chew on social media.

Number one: if you do this, you're going to get social media burnout.

It happens all the time people open up 20 profiles all at once, they can't post to all

of them, they get burnt out.

When this happens business owners go around and tell people that social didn't work for

them, that they don't see the point of it, they get confirmation bias and they miss huge

opportunities.

Social has tons of opportunities for businesses to promote themselves, and sell their products,

and if you go all in all at once, you risk getting burnt out so we don't want to see

that.

The number two reason we don't like seeing people bite off more than they can chew is

if you open a social profile people are now expecting customer service to come through

that channel.

80% of people that ask a question or complain on Twitter to a brand expect an answer within

one hour.

That is a very short turnaround so if you can not manage it, don't open the page.

If you only have a Facebook page, that's better than having a Facebook Page and a Twitter

account that you don't check.

So don't bite off more than you can chew, only open channels that you can because otherwise

people are going to comment, you're not going to answer them, and then they're going to

get angry with your brand, frustrated with your brand.

The third reason why we don't want to see people bite off more than they can chew is

because if you do so, you will have blank profiles.

When you have blank profiles that aren't updated regularly, people that come and check on your

brand and are considering purchasing from you are going to get a negative connotation

with your brand.

74% of people, and this is according to Digital Marketing Magazine, 74% of people when they're

shopping online go to social profiles to check out the brand or product and evaluate them.

If they go to your brand page and they see that you're not posting anything, you haven't

updated anything since 2015, they're going to negatively associate that with your brand

and they may not purchase from you.

If they can't find your page on Pinterest they may move to Facebook to check you out

there.

If you're updating your page their regularly, you may convert a sale.

So don't bite off more than you can chew.

Those are three reasons why we don't want to see brands doing this if you found this

video useful, go ahead and hit the subscribe button in the bottom right hand corner I would

really appreciate that.

We talk about marketing updates and ways to promote your business, lots of good stuff

on this channel.

So for now guys I'm Justin Kerby, thanks so much for watching, and we'll talk to you next

time.

Tutorial Tuesday Ep 9: Paper Beads - Duration: 9:40.

so hey guys it's Tuesday and today we are going to be making our these fun

little paper beads

you can see I've got a couple different styles I've got this one that's just

kind of like a straight peg this one narrows at the top and if it's narrow at

the top and the bottom so this paper beads are really fun and easy to make

and I like them because they're great for a variety of ages you know little

kiss-up one of them I have fun making them and you can make some really cute

projects out of them and another great thing is you don't need too many

supplies so let's look at what we need your first not going to want paper

obviously as far as what patreon use I'm going to be using these little a nice

fun scrapbook paper sheets I've also got some printer paper that's just colored a

nice light lavender purple I haven't tried it with construction paper but of

construction paper that you've got on hand it should work just fine so first

thing you're going to want is paper next thing you're going to want is some glue

this is just a stick of Elmer's glue which actually I found this in a bag

that has the date August 2010 Ram on it but and that's crossed out so this was a

little funky when I was using it to make these beads earlier but Elmer's glue

stick is what you want probably not one from 2010 you might want to might want

to get a new one you just don't buy glue sticks as much when you're my age the

next thing we're going to want and we're going to want some way to measure it you

can use it tape measure I've got this little crafting tape measure here and

I've also got a measure on my cutting board it has different dimensions and

marks on it so you can use a ruler you can use cutting board you can use a tape

measure just some way to measure and then the next thing you're going to want

is a way to cut the paper the idea to make means is you're going to cut the

paper into different sized strips to get the different looks so you're going to

need either scissors or you can use a paper slicer I really like this one by

Fiskars it works really great you can measure it and it gives nice smooth

edges so the beads like extra crisp then the last thing you're going to want is a

skewer this is a bamboo skewer here and this is what we're going to wrap our

beads around because the idea is we're going to take this strip of paper and

we're going to roll it up so we're just going to use this bamboo skewer to roll

the beads around so let's get started I'm using some six inch by 6 inch

scrapbook paper so if your paper is larger than this you want to make sure

that the lengthwise of your strips is six inches and then we'll mark along

here to measure the different links so on one end to get this first shape we're

going to mark an inch at the bottom and a quarter inch up at the top and both of

these measurements are being marked from the edge from the left edge because what

we want to do is by keeping this size straight but angling this size it's

going to cause the bottom to be flat but the top to curve in and then once we've

got our marks made you can use a pair of scissors I'm going to use this Fiskars

paper clay sore just because it gives nice edges and I'm going to make sure

that my marks are lined up and I'm going to cut from mark to mark so now I have a

strip of paper that's like this the nice thing about this project is your paper

strips don't have to be perfect so if eyes a little bit off of my measurement

that's okay it'll still work out fine so cutting a strip like this gives this

shape to get this next shape we want to make both sides be angled and we want

the skinny end to kind of shift over if you think about it instead of this side

lining up at this point we want it to converge in the middle not off to this

side so we're going to need to make some more marks at the bottom we're going to

measure a quarter inch over then the top we want to be one inch wide however if I

measure an inch from the edge after we just did our previous cut this mark is

going to line up right above this mark and this sides going to be straight so

we're just going to kind of rough it we're going to move this over a little

ways so that way these two marks are kind of lined up in the middle here and

then we're going to mark the lunch spot and right here

so essentially what we've done is we've got to measure two quarter inch here in

here but instead of keeping this inch shifted over against this edge we

shifted it to the right a little bit so that way this smaller side will line up

in the middle of this wider side and then I'm going to cut this one out using

my paper cutters and so here is our strip to make it look to make a bead

like this and I'll point out the difference here you can see it better

now they're both cut this side this edge is straight and it makes them right

angle here but here this narrow piece is kind of lined up in between you could

draw lines in the middle here and hit the point where it converges so our last

bead type is the easiest to cut we just want to make it be the same width on

both sides I'm going to make this bead about an inch thick what's nice about

seasons is you can make them as tall or as narrow as you want so this edge here

is still straight because we haven't done anything with it so I'm just going

to measure an inch and at the bottom and an inch in at the top and then I'm going

to cut this side so here's where you're going to need your skewer and your glue

you're also going to want your paper strips so to start we're going to start

with this strip you want to flip it over because we want the pattern to be on the

outside and now we're just going to lay it underneath here take your glue and

rub a decent amount of glue on the other side of the skewer as I said this glue

is pretty old so yours hopefully won't look quite like this I'm just going to

smear some glue on there and then we're going to start rolling now when we roll

we're going to take this bottom edge and curl it around the bamboo skewer and

we're just going to slowly carefully tuck that edge under as we curl it

around and because we want one side of this bead to stay straight as we curl we

want to keep this straight edge lining up so just going to keep pressing

tightly on here and rolling this paper strip around when we get to the glue

part well make sure you press really firmly because we don't want your beads

to come undone you might find it's easier if you lay it on the table and

roll kind of like pushing like that make sure as you roll that you keep your

paper lined up evenly for the look you're going for and that once our beat

is mostly rolled up time to get some more glue smear it on the end you want

to make sure that you glue glue goes all the way to the end of the paper strip or

else it won't stay seal and we'll start to unwind

then finish rolling the last little bit

I want to make sure once you glue it that you really pinch and hold it for a

moment so the glue can set and here we go this is our first bead and now we're

going to repeat the process for the other one when we work this speed we

want to make sure that the narrow part stays kind of in the center you can see

when I rolled this one I didn't do it so evenly and so the shape of the bead is a

little offset this side is a little bit longer than this size a little bit

shorter but you can adjust it however you want and then let me roll this bead

we want to make sure we keep both ends even so I'm going to roll these ones up

really quick

I hope you have fun making these beads I think they're all so cute and I love a

different way the patterned paper shows when you curl it but I hope you enjoy

this tutorial also you might notice I'm wearing a pair of paper bead earrings

I'm going to put together a video with some different project ideas because you

might be going cool I've got a bunch of these paper beads but what do I do with

them so I want to put together a video and giving you some different ideas and

inspiration and that's always please give this video

a thumbs up subscribe if you haven't already I would love for you to be able

to keep up with my videos and if you've already got ideas now that you've seen

this tutorial of what you might want to use your paper beads for comment below

and let me know and there might inspire someone else to try the same thing and

as always if you have any questions or comments leave those below I want to

hear from you and I hope you have a great rest of your week

Best Dill Pickle Recipe!!!! - Duration: 4:15.

Hey everybody, it's Julia and I'm here my mama, Karen and today, we're going to make

some pickles.

Dill pickles.

Dill pickles, yes.

My famous dill pickles.

My mom's been making dill pickles for over 30 years, so she's going to teach us how today.

The first thing I did this morning was put the jars in the dishwasher on the sanitize

cycle and they're just finished, they'll stay hot in there until we need them.

So these are the medium sized pickling cukes.

Mom, would you say that this is the I 'dill' size for dill pickles?

yes.

We've got everything ready, it's time to put the pickles in the jars.

Make sure that the dishwasher stays nice and hot and that all the other jars stay in there,

so we've got to be quick.

Ready?

We going to do two at a time.

Okay, so what we do, we put a little bit of this, a little bit of that.

And then start loading up with the big ones in the bottom.

Stuff in as many as you can.

Put the big ones in the bottom, then the medium then the next size.

You want to leave probably about a half inch at the top of pickle free zone.

This is when the little ones come in handy.

So anyways, that's probably about good enough.

Is that okay?

Yep, perfect.

I'm going to put the brine onto the pickles.

Not right up to the top, you have to leave about a quarter of an inch of head space.

Just gently tighten and then because it's actually the seal that seals it, it's not

by screwing this on tight that makes it seal.

And it won't seal if you screw it on too tight, it needs room to contract.

Then leave them over here out of the way and they will cool and you'll hear the lid pop

down, you'll hear a pop sound.

And it can take up to 24 hours.

And you'll hear a little pop and the dimple will go slightly indented or flat.

If you get right down to eye level, you can see that it's down.

Another test is to lift it up by the seal.

Do the tap test.

So this one has not been sealed, hear that sound?

And this one has been sealed.

So the pickles will be ready in about 6 weeks.

Thankfully, we had some pickles pre made from last year and they are delicious.

Cheers!

Cheers!

Mmmm.

And that's how you make a dill pickle.
