Is your niceness killing you?

That's a great question.

And we're going to talk about that today.

Hi there. I'm Angela Brown, and this is Ask A House Cleaner.

This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question,

and I get to help you find an answer.

Now, if you have a question, you can ask it over at AskaHouseCleaner.com

There's a little blue button right there in the corner.

You can click on that button and it will send your question to me right here at the show.

If you're more comfortable with email, Angela@AskaHouseCleaner.com

All right, onto today's show, which is from a house cleaner who gives, and gives, and

gives, and she feels like she's getting nothing in return.

It's nothing in return from employees.

It's nothing in return from customers.

She feels like she's burned out because she just keeps giving, and she just keeps delivering,

and she's not getting what she feels she should be getting in return.

So is your niceness killing you?

Okay.

Well, it might be.

It might be.

It sounds like there's a lack of boundaries there.

And so I want to go back to the basics for just a minute.

As house cleaners, naturally we are people pleasers.

We jump into a person's house.

The person, for some reason, needs our help.

And so we jump in and we say, oh yes, I can clean this.

You have lots of problems.

I can clean these problems.

I can organize them.

I can pick them up.

I can shine them.

I can polish them.

And all these things.

We jump through all kinds of hoops.

And then a customer comes in and says, oh, by the way, while you're jumping through hoops,

would you mind jumping through one more?

I have this extra room that I need to get guest ready because somebody is coming in

from out of town.

And you're like, sure, no problem, and then you don't charge them any extra.

You just run in and you tidy up the room, right?

You're being too nice.

Then you get home and you resent it.

And you say, that took me an extra half hour, and I didn't get paid for my extra half hour.

And then you didn't get a tip or anything for all the work that you went to.

And so you're a little bit angry, and maybe a little bit frustrated.

And then you have employees, and then they call in and they say, hey, I'm going to be

an extra 10 minutes late.

Is that okay?

And you want to be nice.

So you go, well yeah, that's okay.

And so you go and you start at the customer's house, because you don't want to be late for the job.

And then a half hour later your employee kind of waddles in, like, hey, I'm just getting

here for whatever reason.

And you're kind of upset like, hey, I've already been working for a half hour without you,

but you don't say anything because you're nice. Right?

There are scenarios that happen to us in everyday life.

It could be with our families, it could be with our children, it can be as our employees

or our customers, where we let people walk all over the top of us because we are so nice.

Yes, we are nice.

All right, well I'm here to share something with you.

As long as you are being nice, that doesn't get you anything, right?

It's nice that you're nice, but people don't like you anymore because you're nice.

You're already intrinsically a nice person.

And so people like you just because you're a nice person, but you don't have to be extra nice. Right?

You can say, well I would love to clean the extra guest bedroom, but I have to charge

for that because it's going to take an extra half hour of my time.

So did you want me to do that today, or do you want me to come back on a different day?

Or is it in your budget, and you want me just to spend it right now?

And if you have it to give, spend it right now.

But at least there's a charge that goes along with that.

We get something in return.

Now we learned this from the TV series, 24.

We learned this from Jack Bauer.

Every single time somebody asked Jack for something, he said,

"I will give you this, but I need something in return."

And usually it was immunity or something like that.

And so, I was always a little surprised when he would do this.

I was like, that's a great technique though.

And what he's asking for is fair.

So the people that you're interacting with, they're going to do the same thing.

You're going to charge me this time for extra cleaning.

Always you've given it to me for free, but that's fair.

That's a fair request.

People respect people that are fair, that respect themselves, more than pushovers. Right?

So you've been fired by people that you gave, and gave, and gave, and gave till you could

give no more.

You were so nice, and then they fired you.

And you can't figure out why.

Well, they fired you because they don't respect you.

You've lost your backbone.

There's another company that came in and said, hey, we'll do the extra bedroom, but we charge more.

And they're like, okay, well that's fair.

People want to be part of fair transactions, right?

You have a no late policy, and your employee calls in and they say,

"Hey, I'm going to be 10 minutes late. Is that okay?"

That's not okay.

Our customers have a starting time, and we have to be there at our starting time because

that is our brand.

That is part of our company.

That is who we are.

And it doesn't matter what element of your business it is, but if that is the element

you are promoting, that is the element that matters.

Now, let's go back to Domino's Pizza for a minute.

They never bragged that they were the best on price.

They never bragged that their pizza tasted better than anyone else's pizza.

What they bragged about was, 30 minutes or less, or it's on us, right?

You get your pizza in 30 minutes or we give it to you for free.

Time was of the essence.

Can you imagine a Domino's Pizza employee going,

"Well, I'll start the delivery in 15 minutes. Is that okay?

No, that's not okay.

Our thing is time.

30 minutes or we got to pay for the pizza. Right?

So if you have an on time policy, and your employees keep taking advantage of that, and

they keep coming in late, and you are filling in the gaps and you're being too nice, that

is your problem.

It's your problem because it's causing you stress.

And now you're angry about it and you're frustrated.

And when you're angry, and you're stressed, and you're frustrated, that eats away at your

health and your emotional wellness.

So now you're a boss that's not healthy and you're not emotionally well.

And so ask me this question.

Is it okay if I show up to work, and I run an empire, and I'm not healthy, and I'm not

emotionally well?

My answer to you is, you know what?

No, you're not.

Go home and get your head straight.

Take a nap, get rested.

Get rid of the stress.

Get rid of the anxiety, and come back when you can be the boss that your employees and

your team needs you to be.

Because if you don't have the backbone to run your company, your employees are going

to take it away from you.

We've heard all kinds of stories about employees hijacking the company from the employers.

Or they hijack the customers and they run off and they start their own business.

If you run a company that people don't want to be a part of, they're not going to stick around.

At all.

Under any circumstances.

So if you're being too nice and you're giving lots of leeway, you're being the nice guy

and you're not saying anything because you've got this fake smile on your face, and you're

just going to play nice because you want everybody to like you.

I got news for you.

You're going to be out of business.

It doesn't matter if you run a company and people like you or not.

It really doesn't matter.

The goal in business is to earn money to pay your bills.

And if you're doing all kinds of extra nice things, working a half hour extra for a customer

because you are nice, that's not going to put money in your pocket.

That defeats the end goal.

If you have employees that come in and they are late, that defeats the end goal.

Because you don't have people that have your back that are going to help you run the empire.

What you have is people that are pushing you around, and now you are working overtime,

and you are overworked, and you are stressed because you don't have those boundaries in place.

So my suggestion to you is this.

Stop what you're doing right now, because it's not working.

Take a huge step back and look at the niceness that you have.

And if you need to restructure your conversations with your group meetings, with your employees,

with your customers.

I don't know what's going on in the business, but what I suggest is this.

Restructure what you're going to say.

Think about it in your head and write it down if you have to.

And then when you get in front of your customers, or you get in front of your employees.

If you're no good at this and you can't wing it, read your script.

Just read it to them.

Say, hey, listen.

I prepared a few thoughts, I'm going to read this so I don't miss anything.

And then read your script.

Stay on book.

Stay on book and say, hey, listen, there's a new sheriff in town.

I'm here to regain control of the company that I built.

Right?

This is your little baby.

This is your responsibility.

And so if for some reason you're just being too nice, and you're being pushed around,

and you're being walked all over the top of, and they're taking advantage of you, you're

the only person that can fix it.

You are the only one.

And so I'm here to suggest this.

It's time.

It's time, if you're a really nice person and you're a people pleaser, cut it out.

Just cut it out, right?

You don't have to be mean and ugly, and you don't have to be a tyrant.

But what I'm suggesting is, you can be nice and friendly without being over friendly.

Without people pushing you around and taking advantage of you, because that's not healthy

and it's not wise.

Yeah.

All those things.

All right, until we meet again,

Leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.

Документален филм "Дом Божий" / DOCUMENTARY FILM - THE GOD'S HOME - Duration: 14:09.

What is the temple for me?

Except a beautiful building,

from an architectural and artistic point of view,

this is the place of my service,

the place where

we pray to God.

The place where we have

a lot of sentimental moments of our lives.

A place with a special atmosphere

which we can feel when we enter into the temple,

because the temple is God's home,

dedicated to God.

The priest service is pleasant,

soul-saving,

soothing for the priest,

but it is not always easy.

My name is Svetla Dobreva and I'm a principal and a teacher

at the Sunday school

of the Temple "Assumption" in city of Targovishte.

We, the church trustees of the Temple, gather periodically,

in order to solve problems, related to the Temple,

and help with what we can.

The Temple, as a whole,

is a place, where

people

live with their faith.

The Temple for me is a second home.

For me, the Temple "Assumption" is the place where I fulfill

a big part of the church life which every faithful orthodox christian should have.

The Temple for me is the saving

of the human soul, which

can not be saved by itself without

God's grace and

blessing.

Our Temple "Assumption"

has an ancient history,

which began in

the distant year of 1851,

when with the help of

the local community of the Bulgarians and Christians,

the Temple is built by the prominent master constructor

usta Dimitar of Tryavna.

Just a few years later

this magnificent building rose.

This happened in times when

it was difficult to receive permission for the building of such big

and beautiful temples.

This speaks for the special influence

of the Bulgarian community during this time,

for its unity,

for its capabilities.

There are some preserved historical documents,

which reveal that before the year of 1851,

when this temple was built,

at the same place existed another similar, but a lesser temple,

which unfortunately

was burned.

I suppose, that this was the reason

for the building

of the new temple,

and because of the fact that, back then,

there were greater possibilities,

which allowed the construction of this temple,

which was one of the largest temples

of its time in Bulgaria.

Soon after the construction of the temple,

some appropriate icon-painters,

who also came from the town of Tryavna,

created the main icons of the temple.

And thus the temple started its

spiritual and physical life.

Later the temple endured

some mishaps

In 1947

it was burnt.

We don't know who started the fire,

but almost the whole temple was burnt.

After the fire, only the walls of the temple remained.

And once again, thanks to

the local people, the Christians,

the temple has been fully restored in its present form.

And thus

during these several centuries,

the temple still existed in our city

it continues its activity up to this day

and it is still

a cultural

and spiritual center.

Daily and constantly there is a spiritual activity,

both - enlightening

and soothing and above all,

blessed by the fulfillment of holy mysteries,

the greatest attention of which we give to

the holy liturgy,

with the help of which we associate

with our God Jesus Christ.

We can boast and give thanks to the Virgin Mary and God

for the fact that we have an awake

and active community, parish,

which regularly

and willingly visits

this holy temple. I remember

my first steps in the temple more than

when

there were

5, 6, 10 old women in the temple.

and I'm feeling the difference

now, when so many young people,

with joy and desire,

come in through

the temple doors and participate of our spiritual life.

It is outdated thinking that

the young people are far away from faith and religion.

Everyone can see it with their eyes.

In every single liturgy

our temple is full

with more and more young people

coming with their families and children ,

and they find

spiritual comfort

and another way

other than the daily experience

to live their joy.

Who needs faith today,

I would say that everybody needs it,

even those who

deny God,

must at least have some faith in something.

But here and now we are talking about our faith - the orthodox faith,

which by itself is not only

a philosophy, a theory,

but it is also a way of life.

When does man begin to realize

his need of faith?

Unfortunately, we, the people, are the kind of creatures,

that, in most cases,

remember God, when experience something dramatic,

something tough, catastrophe, illness,

loss of someone dear,

in most of these cases, that is when

people remember God,

church, priest and spiritual life.

It would be much better,

much more noble and honest with God

if we realize our need to connect with Him

in every moments of our lives.

Do we need of faith, religion, God in our 21 century?

When I was young, there was a time of atheism,

and so it was said that

the Christianity is coming to an end.

But alas, we see that all this is

totally refuted.

We see that faith, as whole,

not only Christianity,

but I would say,

to a greater extent,

that the Muslims, for example, have been active

in recent years. But our faith has

a very important and significant place in the world,

in all the processes

and those societies

that have preserved their traditions in faith

which hold on to their religious values,

succeed to survive,

manage to overcome the difficulties, even manage

to impose, if it is necessary, their opinion. I personally believe,

that every human being needs

his faith in God. Of course,

there are people who don't believe in Him,

but I think that this is just a phase of their lives.

Because, if anyone takes a sincere look

into the depths of his soul,

he can not fail to realize that nothing here

in this world and in his soul

is accidental.

When a man has no faith, he feels disillusioned, desperate.

The unfaithful man or the one

who has no resilience, mainstays, does not know why

why things happen to him, he thinks that

everything happens to him by accident. He thinks that everything is pointless.

This man is desperate.

Faith gives him strength to continue to live,

faith will bring him to the good deeds

and faith will lead him

to search for God and thus to feel better.

I think that every man needs faith

and he has it,

but everybody has it in a different level.

And only God knows what that level is.

Faith is a very beautiful thing, because

it makes us human beings and allows us to

do good deeds, because without faith,

I don't believe that this is possible, because people

will not have support, mainstay and thus simply live

a monotonous life filled with care

and work only. And life is not only that,

but life is also a soul-saving and

filled with virtues

and good deeds.

Unfortunately, people have

а lot of temptations, all of us have them,

but following God's commandments,

which are the laws of life,

we can live

a righteous

and pious life. Having both

support and foundation

God's commandments to forgive

and love each other,

we

will have

the right

stakes on which

to stand and build

the society in which we live.

I therefore pray to God that all the people

should truely know God

and to

begin to serve Him, not only to pray and await

help from Him when they experience something bad,

God will help them, but the point is that they should be willing to save their souls,

which is the real intention of the human life.

The divine laws that are left to people to be observed

are not given in vain.

If all of us, at some point,

observe these laws,

do you imagine what sort of order there will be in this world.

But

we know that not everyone feels

the need to find God in time,

therefore, for those who want, in some way,

to find,

to search for faith, the temple is here.

Faith only by itself is not enough,

because it is written in the Gospel that

even the devil believes and trembles.

This has to say that faith should be combined

with the service to God.

Making

faith

in good deeds,

good thoughts, good life.

Faith in God is important, because

man, by his nature,

is close

to his creator.

We want to know God,

because he wrote his name in our hearts.

For me, the future of

the Temple "Assumption"

in city of Targovishte is encouraging.

Many generations have passed from here.

I see that many young people have

taken the path of faith today

and they are a good bet

for its survival in the future.

What could I, a sinner,

say

to others?

Only what Christ Himself said

in the last hours

of his earthly journey:

love one another!

This is the most important,

the first, the most encompassing God's commandment.

If we love each other,

then God will be with us and we will be with Him.

You can sign up for a free 7-day trial right here, and you can then watch the show live on your computer via the Philo website, or on your phone, tablet or streaming device via the Philo app.

If you can't watch live, Philo also allows you to DVR programs and watch them up to 30 days later.

And even if you forget to DVR something, Philo also comes with a 72-hour rewind feature, which allows you to replay any event that has aired in the last three days.

     .

The live Ghost Adventures special airs for four hours tonight and then has an encore presentation of the special, airing directly after it, from 12 – 4 a.m.

So, if you miss the first showing, there is more than one.

The official Xfinity synopsis of tonight's special reads, "The crew spends a night in Zak Bagans' The Haunted Museum, which contains hundreds of haunted objects, including Peggy the Doll and the Dybbuk Box; Zak attempts to open the Dybbuk Box, believed to be haunted by a malicious spirit; Josh gates hosts.".

Gates, who is hosting the special, is a television host and producer, known for shows including Expedition Unknown and Destination Truth.

He has also hosted the Ghost Hunters Live Halloween special in the past.

This year's special takes place in Ghost Adventures star Zak Bagans' own museum, which is in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On the museum's official website, it gives a backstory on the facility and Bagans' reason for opening such a place.

The website states, "The 11,000-square foot property built in 1938 was originally owned by Cyril S.

Wengert, a prominent businessman.

Through the years, hostile spirits have been rumored to roam the halls terrorizing past occupants, family members who passed away there whose energy remains.

Long-time Las Vegans even claim dark rituals took place in the home's basement during the 1970's.

Paranormal enthusiasts visiting Zak Bagans' The Haunted Museum will venture down creepy winding hallways and secret passages into more than 30 rooms that rival scenes from Hollywood horror films, setting the stage for frightening facts about each paranormal piece such as the Dybbuk Box known as the world's most haunted object.".

The website also states, "Perhaps most unsettling, the original staircase from Indiana's "Demon House," notorious for powerful paranormal activity before being demolished in 2014.

The wooden banister and creaky steps now stand in a dimly-lit corner, resting on a blanket of dirt from the location.

Following its installation, a group of construction workers walked off the job and refused to come back.

For that reason, visitors are required to sign a waiver stating they understand the risks before entering." How crazy is that?!.

TOEFL speaking task 8.

Use a template for TOEFL speaking. A template is as a chart that you fill in

a skeleton for a body. A TOEFL speaking template structures your response. A

template enables you to organize your thoughts and to express yourself in a

logical manner. These TOEFL IBT Speaking templates

provide you with a choice of organized structures patterns and transitional

words and phrases. You can adapt to develop a fluid, effective and ultimately

high-scoring speaking response. Four advantages of a TOEFL speaking

template keeps your response focused a TOEFL speaking template enables you to

put down your thoughts in a clear and focused response.

The speaking section does not need to be as structured as those of the writing

section but it still is important to be able to follow a logical progression of

ideas and clearly answer the questions that you are asked.

TOEFL IBT Speaking templates offer you different ways you can present your

ideas. For example when giving your opinion a template we'll start with a

summary of an issue first before you begin explaining your opponent of view

and explain your motivation. Makes your answer smoother using useful

transitions phrases and sentence openers. You can smoothly connect your ideas

using the transitions found on the templates. You will not only allow your

thoughts to flow better but will also help you sound more like a native

speaker.

A spinoff of this is that by memorizing basic phrases you will perfect your

pronunciation which will make you more easily understood on test day.

Time-saving you will save a great deal of time as you just have to fill in the

gaps rather than imagine whole phrases and a general structure.

Raise your confidence. If you know exactly what to expect on the speaking

section you will not freeze on the day of the test. Showing confidence is

important to getting a high TOEFL score in the speaking.

At last we get to the templates. Below our six TOEFL speaking templates one

template for each speaking task with tips on how to customize your responses.

Choose from multiple options familiar topics. For task one you'll speak about a

personal experience or desire and have multiple options from which to choose. In

total you'll have one minute for the task, 15 seconds to prepare your response

and 45 seconds to speak.

There is going to be a TV show that relates to students. Which show would you

like to watch, 1. Interview school leaders. 2. Students debate on political

and social topics. Three comedy about school life.

task 1 template. 1. Begin by introducing your chosen topic and your opinion on it don't

spend too much time trying to summarize the prompt. Just quickly state what the

topic is and which option you believe is better

Examples in my opinion,----- is the -----because---- Personally I enjoy/ like for two to three

reasons I enjoy /like---- because--- My best/ favorite---- is to me--- I would like to---

because----

Personally I would like 3. comedy about school life for two reasons.

2. (Optional) introduce the number of reasons you have for selecting your

subject.

Examples I feel this way for two/ three reasons. This is because of two/ three

reasons. I have two/ three reasons

I feel this way for two reasons

Now explain your first reason for choosing your subject. Be detailed with

your reasons here, ideally you'll devote two or three sentences to each reason

you give. Make sure to use specific examples. Examples First for example

First off, For instance For one that is my first reason is that what I mean is

that, First off I think a comedy about student life would be the most

entertaining. After all all work no play makes Tom a

dull boy.

Next explain your second reason once again try to come up with a brief

example or two to illustrate why you have chosen this particular subject to

discuss. Examples secondly this is because, Next, as a result, I in addition, I

believe, he'll think that another reason is that basically,

secondly, I would chose the third option because I have had previous experience

of this kind of comedy. which was very positive this is because the life of

young students confronted by total freedom and eccentric professors

behavior is a great cocktail for entertainment.

Six (optional) you may conclude your response with a general summary of what

you've discussed. Examples and this is why my best/ favorite is this is why I

believe feel think that and these are the reasons I'd like to

and these are the reasons I'd like to watch a comedy about school life.

How to customize your task1, Template 1. Vary your details throughout your

response you'll want to offer a variety of key details and examples without
