Fe del Mundo: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Fe del Mundo, a Filipina pediatrician, trailblazer, and humanitarian, whose life work revolved around the care and healing of children, is the subject of a November 27, 2018 Google Doodle honoring what would be her 107th birthday.

"Also known as 'The Angel of Santo Tomas,' del Mundo devoted her life to child healthcare and revolutionized pediatric medicine in the process, Google wrote with the Google Doodle.

She is sometimes referred to as a "medical stateswoman.".

Fe del Mundo was a pioneer for women in medicine.

Here's what you need to know:.

Fe del Mundo Revolutionized Healthcare in the Philippines After Seeing Her Sisters Die Young.

Fe del Mundo was widely praised as a "humanitarian," focusing a great deal of her work on children.

She founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines, according to The Independent, and also founded The Children's Medical Centre Foundation in 1957, which "provided medical care to rural communities lacking insurance," the site notes.

According to writer Natasha Schlaffer, Fe del Mundo's interest in pediatric healthcare derived in part from the loss of her own siblings; "three of Fe's eight siblings died in infancy, and when her older sister became sick with appendicitis at age 11, there was nothing her family could do to save her," Schlaffer writes.

She was born to Paz Villanueva and her lawyer husband Bernardo del Mundo, according to PCIJ.

The site reports that del Mundo explained how her sister Elisa's death at age 7 influenced her life's trajectory, quoting her as saying, "She kept a little notebook where she wrote that she wanted to take up medicine.

When she died, I decided to take her place.".

She developed a well-known treatment for diarrhea in children that was called BRAT, consisting of banana, rice, apple, and tea.

Fe del Mundo Attended Harvard Medical School Before the School Formally Accepted Women.

Fe Del Mundo broke gender barriers.

According to Schlaffer, she was an accomplished scholar who "graduated at the top of her class at the University of the Philippines in 1933" and was offered a scholarship to go to any college she desired by the country's president.

She chose Harvard Medical School and was accepted but the university at first thought she was male.

Harvard Medical School would not routinely accept women for another 10 years.

An exception was made due to her impressive talents, and Fe "became the first woman to ever attend Harvard Medical School," Schlaffer writes.

A devout Catholic, she was described in Philippine Daily Inquirer as "petite, barely 5 feet tall with a fragile frame that belied a strong will and an agile mind.

She was a fastidious dresser, well-turned out in coordinated tailored outfits, from dainty vintage jewelry to two-toned high heels and hair that was impeccably coifed.".

del Mundo Practiced Medicine Into Her 90s, Sometimes From a Wheelchair.

Philip S.

Chua, M.D., her former student, wrote a tribute to Fe when she died.

"This phenomenal lady physician was married only to her lifetime care of sick children and never had a family of her own," he wrote.

"She practiced pediatrics up to her ripe old age of 94, most of time from her wheelchair since 3 years before.".

Fe died in 2011 at the age of 99.

Her longevity was attributed in part to her positive spirit and healthy living; she once famously said, "Leave the dining table a little less full, a little hungry, and you will live longer.".

She also once said, according to MedObserver, "Women make good pediatricians and they can very much influence parents in the care of children.

I feel that if you give the world the best that you can, the best will always come back to you.

It's worth exerting all your efforts to make the best of what you have and apply them in your practice because it's a big help, and somehow [one that is] well rewarded.".

When she died, the Philippine Daily Inquirer memoralized her as an "esteemed doctor and healer and nurturer of generations of children.

The news site notes that she was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award, "which is Asia's version of the Nobel Prize.

" The award website says Fe del Mundo was "a committed humanitarian, pediatrician, administrator, educator, researcher, author, public health advocate, whose pioneering spirit in fostering health and preventing sickness particularly among children helped not only in reducing infant morbidity and mortality in the country but also in establishing health, research, and educational institutions.

Fe del Mundo Achieved Many 'Firsts'.

Fe del Mundo was the first at many things, an accomplished doctor who never failed to impress.

Chua lists some of those firsts. "Dr.

del Mundo was founder of Children's Home in Manila and the Institute of Maternal and Child Health," he writes.

"She was the first Filipino Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, the first lady president of the Philippine Pediatric Society, the founder and first president of the Philippine Woman's Medical Association, the first woman to be elected president of the Philippine Medical Association in it's 65-year history, and the first Asian to be voted president of the Medical Woman's International Association.

She was also remembered lovingly by her family as "a gentle and affectionate sister, cousin and aunt.

del Mundo Helped Children During the Japanese Occupation.

In addition to her pediatric work, Dr.

del Mundo is considered a humanitarian.

Never was this more true than during the Japanese Occupation of her home country during World War II.

When war broke out, children were imprisoned.

They were foreign nationals.

She set up a "Children's Home" to care "for these sick children in enemy-occupied Manila," according to PCIJ.

Because she cared for American soldiers' children during this time period, the U.S.

government referred to her as showing "unflagging and selfless dedication and sacrifice," MedObserver reports.

"I'm glad that I have been very much involved in the care of children, and that I have been relevant to them," she told PCIJ.

"They are the most outstanding feature in my life.".

Christmas Gift Guide for Her - Duration: 7:23.

in today's video I will be giving you 5 Christmas gift ideas for her for that

special woman in your life or your mother or your wife or that special girl

in your life or for yourself if you're going shopping for yourself alright hi

my name is Shawn welcome to Prayerlights if you are new I would love for you

consider subscribing to this channel I post new content every week on fun faith

and motherhood alright let's get into some gift ideas

I mean tis the season for gifts right here we go the first gift idea I have

for you is the rose face mask this is the rose face mask and it is by fresh

and it is so hydrating and actually has like real row so if you don't like rose

then you're not gonna like this but I'm not a flower person like I actually

don't like the smell of fresh-cut flowers and it's not that strong for me

but it really does a fantastic job of hydrating and I use it once a week I put

it all over my face leave it on for about 5-10 minutes and then wash it off

and I noticed a difference a lot of times I'll use it in the morning for

right before my makeup but that would be an excellent gift idea I will put all

the links of everything I talked about and today's video I hope it those in the

description box down below gift idea number 2 is another beauty product but

this time it is called the daily smooth by Soap & Glory

and I know some of Lori has been around a really long time but I actually had

never tried it out in stores I always felt like this simp was really strong

and it is a strong scent but oh it is so good it is so good it's called the daily

smooth and this one mmm this one smells kind of perfumey this is the scent mist

you madly it's as floral and seductive it does smell kind of kind of floral

but I'm again I'm not a big floral person hearing I'm recommending to

floral things to you but it smells really good and I highly recommend I've

also tried some of their other scents but I really really enjoy as well and

the recently priced I want to say this was only 12 somewhere between 12 and 15

dollars for the big huge bottle of lotion but they have

their body scrub is amazing and their body butters are amazing so this is like

the three products that I have recently discovered from them all right I will

save the most expensive gift for last this is between 12 to 15 dollars and

this is a sparkly Starbucks cup I love these cups I put water and green

tea in them mostly my water and this one sparkly they had a gold sparkly one as

well I got this at Walmart look how sparkly it is I got this at Walmart it

was somewhere between twelve and thirteen dollars which I didn't think

was bad at all so if you have a Starbucks lover or someone who like

sparkly cups they had all different kinds of things things what if what is

that thing they had all different kinds of patterns but these sounds a little

more indulgent here to choose from but I highly recommend this as well can you

hear my ice so now we get into more extensive stuff and it's actually what I

have on the chair right here behind me you guys might have thought this is just

my chair but it's actually a blanket and oh my goodness is one of the most

snuggly okay is the snuggly is blanket I have ever felt in my entire life and

it's from a line that originally made baby blankets and people love the baby

blanket so much that they decided to make the full size this is a throw

blanket but they even have a size of a blanket that goes over your whole bed

there they're they're kind of pricey but this one I got on sale for $50 on sell

for $50 I know right the original price was a hundred and twenty so $50 is

really good so this is definitely a splurge item but they come in all sorts

of patterns this one just has a gray stripe and the rest of it is this cream

color but I wish I could show you like the texture of it it's just so so

snuggly and my family members try to take it and from me and I just snuggle

with it I've just I can't stop snuggling with it but I will place below there's a

Nordstrom Rack that I buy or hautelook one of those - well it's

Nordstrom Rack will have these on sell occasionally throughout the year for

flash sells they'll have a one sale for $50 $49 or something and so that's when

I suggest but if you're buying for a gift and they don't have one on sale

whoever receives receives a cuddly blanket again they come in many

different colors is not gonna be disappointed so even if you pay full

price for it for a gift for someone they're going to love it so I will place

below two links the link for the flash sale where they frequently going $50 and

then I'll go I'll link to where you can get them at Nordstrom for the full price

if you want to do that why am I so out of breath because I get so excited to

talk about Christmas stuff Christmas gifts all right what is the number one

thing that you are hoping to get for Christmas this year leave that in the

comments down below cuz I'm very curious what is like the number one gift that

you are asking for for Christmas not your family not your kids what are you

asking for for Christmas I love to do alright the last thing I have is the

most expensive thing and it's the last thing and I recently with gifted this

and it is for the person who loves making memories or who and who loves

cataloging like family events and family get-togethers and just wants to hold on

to memories and that is a camera that is reasonably priced it does excellent job

at video it's what I'm currently filling on now it does that blurry background

that you're seeing at and focus isn't on my face so it does an excellent job with

video and it also takes really good pictures I'm still learning I'm still

learning how to take the pictures because I am NOT a photographer or a

photographer and I'm only learning how to be a videographer

I highly recommend the Canon g7x mark ii it is around five hundred and fifty

dollars which is really good it's very compact you can put it in your pocket

but I will link that camera down below so we're gonna we're gonna record

ourselves recording ourselves and so there you see the camera and how it has

the flip out screen and it just has a lot of features anyways it's a tiny

camera I will put a link to another gift guide up here in the card and in

description box down below for suggestions for toys for kids if it's

already up it'll be up here or down below but if it's not up yet then it's

coming alright guys I will see you in my next video thanks for watching

How to Stay Focused in Your Business - Duration: 9:56.

now's the time of year where it's particularly important to maintain focus

and to narrow in on the key things that are gonna make the biggest difference

for your business next year I know as a business owner entrepreneur you're

constantly managing a thousand priorities and you need help narrowing

in and focusing so that you can get real results right away this video is going

to help you to implement a simple process for creating a breakthrough in

your business and getting stuff done so that you can mark things off the list

and focus on what really matters so watch the video until the end so you can

get access to the free get it done guide that has already helped thousands of

entrepreneurs to create a breakthrough in their business

my name is Kelly Roach I'm a business growth coach and I help entrepreneurs

and business owners around the world to make six and seven figure leaps

in their business quickly and without compromising their quality of life with

the strategies that I teach including the one that you are about to learn

today if you're ready to leverage your time and scale your business quickly

make sure you hit subscribe and tap the bell so you never miss an episode I

always like to take some time specifically at this time of year to

talk about setting the right goals and then setting yourself up to be able to

accomplish them we've all had the experience of setting these big goals

and big dreams that we so badly want to accomplish just to find ourselves a few

months later completely off track no real progress made and then we lose

energy and excitement and go get focused on something else it doesn't mean that

that dream disappeared but it means we lost focus on it which means it's

probably never gonna happen the goal for me creating this video today is to help

you stay focused on the things that really matter to you and how to

understand what you need to do to break them down appropriately and in a

systematic way so that you can actually make real progress and ultimately get to

the end goals that matter most to you comment below and tell me the number one

thing that distracts you from making real progress on your big goals that you

set at the beginning of each new year okay so let's get down to business and

talk about the get-it-done process that I have used to help thousands of

entrepreneurs create almost immediate breakthroughs in their business and I've

used this system for quite a while to help people to simplify their focus and

break down their goals in a meaningful way that is actually gonna keep them

focused on the things that really matter to them and get real results so let's

get started number one when you look at the big goal that you want to achieve

whether it's in your business your life your health nutrition whatever it is the

first thing that you have to do is break it down into meaningful milestones so

write that down meaningful milestones meaningful milestones are all of the

elements of working towards that goal like the chapters in a book that are

going to build up to you ultimately meeting your final

destination take some time now to comment in the chat below and tell me

what one meaningful milestone on the way to your big goal is okay so you know the

big goal and you now have written down the meaningful milestones the meaningful

milestones are each core component each lever that you're gonna have to pull in

order to get to that big goal now let's take it to the next step

here's where people fall off a cliff and this is why big dreams many times go to

the Graveyard with people meaningful milestones have to be broken down into

very specific daily actions write down daily actions now here is the essential

element in breaking down the daily actions part of this process what

happens is when we want to achieve a big goal that matters most to us we look at

are we there yet are we there yet are we there yet did it arrive have we

arrived and many times we're measuring ourselves against did we accomplish that

big goal and so what happens is we're always setting ourselves up for failure

because we're assessing ourselves against something that we probably are

not going to achieve for a period of months or maybe even years and so it's

this constant friction between wanting to keep the energy to keep going forward

but this constant disappointment that we're not there yet the way that you

sustain momentum and sustain focus so that you can follow through on big goals

and actually accomplish them is one understanding those milestones like we

talked about already and then to understanding the most important daily

actions that need to happen every single day to accomplish each milestone now the

daily action steps that you do in order to accomplish those milestones matter

and they also evolve and change so the things that you need to do to get from

point zero to milestone one could be very different from the things that you

need to do from point one to point two and that's a really important thing to

understand comment unstoppable below if you now understand that your goal has to

be broken down to milestones you're miles

certains have to be broken down into meaningful daily actions and those daily

actions are gonna change as you move through each milestone okay now let's

talk about reframing the way that you're measuring yourself against success so

that you can sustain the discipline needed to follow through on the focused

goals until you actually meet your big end result that you're looking for so

what you need to measure yourself against guys is do you clearly

understand what the next milestone is and are you consistently executing the

correct activities on a daily basis to get there and are the activities that

you're doing are they actually effective are they working right

sometimes your results especially in the beginning may be very hard to see in the

beginning all of the actions that you're taking may be underneath the surface

think about the iceberg right you only see what's above the water but the vast

majority of the iceberg is underneath that means that a lot of the work that

you're doing in the beginning of this process is underneath the surface you

may not yet be able to see results now the vast majority of people get totally

knocked off their game during this first piece because they think to themselves

what I'm doing is not working and so they quit because they worked really

really hard for a period of time they didn't see the the mountain hasn't moved

and they say to themselves okay well I tried I did my best it didn't work I'm

not getting there I'm not making progress let me go work on something

else so understanding this whole analogy about the iceberg and that those first

through few milestones that are gonna carry you forward towards your big goal

you may not be seeing a lot of the work that you're doing on the surface and

that is where the vast majority of people totally fall off the wagon and

it's why they give up on their dreams so comment unstopable below if you're never

gonna give up on your dreams and you now understand that a lot of that

foundational work is below the surface and you have to trust the process and

keep working at it in order to make it to the milestones that matter and in

order to get to the point where the work that you're doing does show above this

servus and you start to see the mountain move talking about goal-setting is

perhaps one of the oldest topics in the personal development space of all time

but interestingly enough it's one of the areas where we all still struggle we set

the wrong goals we don't follow through on our goals we don't set ourselves up

for success to accomplish our goals and that's why so many people are unhappy

because they don't accomplish their dreams I want to help you to accomplish

your goals and dreams and it's why I put together the get-it-done guide this has

literally been one of the most popular resources I've put together since I

started my business and I have had dozens of people come to me and say this

has totally changed my life. I understand now how to make real

progress and get real results in my life in the areas that matter and do it in a

simple easy-to-follow way with a methodology that's gonna keep me on

track so if you also want to have more success this year accomplishing the

goals and dreams that matter most to you and you want to make real progress each

and every day all you have to do is click the link below to get instant

access to the get-it-done guide and I can't wait to hear about your results

so remember break the goal down into meaningful milestones break the

milestones down into the activities that need to be done consistently on a daily

basis to move you to the next milestone remember the activities that get you

from one milestone to the next bite change and most importantly the first

few milestones that you're working towards a lot of that activity is

working wonders beneath the surface don't judge it by the fact that the

mountain hasn't yet mood stay strong stay focused and you're gonna achieve

your goal thank you so much for watching the video today and I want to remind you

Self Defense Technique Every Woman Should Know! with Gil Katz - Duration: 5:56.

Hello everyone my name is Gil Katz I am a Krav Maga expert. Krav Maga is a system

for self-defense and today I'm joined by my guest

Sharmaine. Hi everyone my name's Sharmaine, I am a freelance content creator and a

designer. Today we are going to combine both of our expertise and show you how

to defend yourself in style. If that's your first time here make sure to

subscribe so you'll never miss another video. Okay so we're going to learn how

to knee forward, Sharmaine is here with me, and we're going to demonstrate to you together

Sharmaine grab your hands, both of your hands go to the shoulder, her shoulder

very good we're going to take one of your leg backwards and you're just going to knee

forward okay let's go. Very good. So look at me quickly it's not only lifting up the

leg you also want to use your hips push forward the leg a little bit, so hands going to grab, and you

then knee and the hips gonna go together forward right so it's this way

let's try it now. Very good, now you're going to grab the other shoulder switching legs and you knee with the

other leg. Let's go. Okay. We're gonna learn how to elbow - front horizontal elbow, Sharmaine is here with me

with me and we're gonna demonstrate to you together how to do it. So first of all you close

your fist and you take it as close as you can to your shoulder you see that I

have one leg for and one leg behind generally the other hand is going to be up

close to the face and I'm just gonna turn my hand this way and just go here

once I strike I also twist my heel and my hips because I am using my rear hand so

thats the elbow strike and then I'm going to come back close, take it as close as you can to the shoulder and take your hand out

Strike with the heel and the hips, come back.

Lets try it. Yes, stronger. So you don't want to go forward with your body

what you want to do is just twist the heel and the hips

so if you're a little far, just get a little closer to the target so then

you can really strike hard, let's see. Stronger. Yes. Very good. The other side, for the other hand you

need to switch legs same thing, close the hand, take it as close as you can to the

shoulder but now we want to twist again the heel and the hips, since you're using your

rear hand, let's go. Very good. We're gonna show you how to do palm strikes so it's very

simple you're gonna keep one leg forward one

leg behind if you're a right-handed then your left leg should be forward and if

you're a left-handed then right leg should be forward. I am a right-handed so my

left is gonna be forward. My hands are gonna be up close to the face and you're

gonna use the palm, this part of the palm and you're just gonna strike forward

with your left hand okay so let's see Ingrid, hold the pad and left hand, stronger, yes.

very good. We're going to do the right hand now. so it's exactly the same thing we

did but with their right we twist the heel and the hips so anytime you're using

the right hand to strike or attack we use the heel and the hips so it's

exactly the same thing we did and twist the heel and the hips, lets try, yeah, and quickly take the hand back. Very good. Now, we're

just going to combine those two strikes together, so we're going to do left, as soon as we

take the left hand back you want to throw the right hand and come back so we have

one two one two lets try it, left followed by the right.

But you start with the..yes, left and then right away the right, again.

Yes, again.

vary good. A question where do you think you're going to aim, where do you want to make

contact once you're going to strike what part

of the body you're going to aim? The face so we aim for the nose or the eyes area

or the lips this is where usually we aim, the forehead is a little harder part of

the head and not as sensitive as the nose or eyebrows

or lips. Sounds good. So that's it for today if you'd like to get more awesome tips make

sure to drop us a like and follow our channel which you can find in the link

Art of Life-ing with Keka: Are you telling yourself the real story? - Duration: 4:23.

Are you telling yourself the real story? That's the question we're pondering

today on the "Art of Life-ing with Keka."

[MUSIC]

Anytime you're expanding your horizons, charting new territory, or you're just

generally trying to grow and try something new,

chances are, you have to "fake it till you make it." Now, this is a universal truth

and it's a really important strategy, if you want to grow. I was at a conference

the other day called, Elevate, in Toronto, and there was a guest on stage.

Her name was Michelle Zatlyn, and she's the co-founder and CEO of a company

called, CloudFare. And she was talking about how it is so important that we get

good at telling a story, even if that means that we have to stand in front of

a mirror and we have to practice that story. We really have to show, that we

believe that story, even if it hasn't happened yet. And there was another guest

on stage his name was Ted Livingston and he is the founder and CEO of a company

called Kwik, or, "kik" rather. Sorry! And he was talking about the fact that

everybody - everybody out there, is trying to figure things out. Nobody has their

crap together. Some people will tell you that they have it together, and other

people will tell you the truth! But at the end of the day, that's a really

important takeaway for us to understand - is that we are all on the same journey,

having the same types of struggles. And we're all trying to "fake it till we make

it." However, I had a conversation with a friend of mine the other day, and he made

me see something in a different way, in relation to this "Fake it till you make it"

type of principle or philosophy, I guess. He was at a networking event, and he said

that there were quite a few people there, and this one woman who was talking about

the fact that, she's an Amazon best seller, and - now don't get me wrong, I

think that's an incredible title, and an incredible accolade to get. But he was

talking to this woman, and he said, "How many books have you sold? How much money

are you making from this? And how long have you been an Amazon bestseller?" And

his point, in sort of poking and prodding that story, was that this woman didn't

have a lot of confidence in herself. And she was, I think, in all essence, trying to

"fake it till she made it." But the thing is, that if you become an Amazon

bestseller, the goal would be that, that title means that a lot of people want to

read your book. A lot of people are following what you

have to say, and they are buying your books! So if you become an Amazon bestseller, it

means that you're on that race, and you're getting to that finish line. But

what my friend was saying is that: all too often, people stop part way through that

race. They say that they're part of the race, they say that they're gonna win the

race, or they say that they've even won the race, because they're telling that

story before it's even happened yet, but then, they don't actually finish the

race! And he was saying, then, when that happens, you can go around to everybody

and say that you're an Amazon best seller, but if the credibility and the

story from being the best seller isn't actually a reality for you, then what you

have in your intuition and your subconscious - is incongruent with what

you're saying to other people. That really got me thinking, that when we talk

about "fake it till you make it" and telling that story, we really have to

make sure that we've crossed that finish line! Now, in public relations - I've been

doing this for...I've been in PR/marketing for over 20 years now. Whether it's been

for an individual or a brand or a large corporation or even a campaign, I've been

professionally trained to tell the best story possible from what I have with the

facts. The interesting thing here is that we have to, in our lives, make sure that

we're not just telling the story that we want to have happen, we actually have to

make it happen! And sometimes that means taking an accolade or credence, that just

gets us through the door, and then really bringing that to fruition, at the end of

the day. When we can tell ourselves the real story, and set ourselves up for

those goals, then we won't have the incongruencies, or the blocks that can

come from it, and that's what we can real - feel really truly proud of the

accomplishments we have, and we can grow even further.
