Hello guys, what's good?

It's me Slavic Affairs, and today we're gonna be talking about Pan-Slavism and Neo-Slavism.

Pan-Slavism versus Neo-Slavism, what is the difference between the two?

I'm sure many of you are quite familiar with the word Pan-Slavism since it's commonly seen on the internet.

Neo-Slavism however, was an idea not so different from Pan-Slavism

and yet many of you probably aren't really familiar with it.

That's because Pan-Slavism was an older, original idea,

while Neo-Slavism was rather a short-lived movement

– that however doesn't mean it was poorly defined.

It actually had quite a few valid points as of course Pan-Slavism did.

But in order to fully understand the difference we must first understand what the two actually are.

So I'm gonna give you a quick look into the history.

Now, Pan-Slavism was a movement or political ideology that really got going in mid-19th century

much like Pan-Germanisation whose main goal was to unify all the German

and possibly also Germanic-speaking people in a single nation-state.

Pan-Slavism wasn't much different except for the fact it wasn't really as successful as Pan-Germanisation

which resulted in unified modern Germany.

But its goals were literally the same,

it aimed to achieve unification of Slavic people to counterbalance the other rivals.

Specifically both movements grew from the sense of unity and nationalism experienced within ethnic groups

after the French Revolution and the consequent Napoleonic Wars.

Now, Pan-Slavism had its main impact in the Balkans, where non-Slavic empires such as the

Byzantine Empire, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Venice—had ruled the South Slavs for centuries.

The first pan-Slavists were the 16th-century Croatian writer Vinko Pribojević and

the 17th-century Aleksandar Komulović, Bartol Kašić, Gundulić and Croatian Catholic missionary Juraj Križanić.

As I've previously mentioned the movement began following the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815.

In the aftermath, the leaders of Europe wanted to restore pre-war status quo at the Congress of Vienna.

Now, Austria felt the threat to this status quo were nationalists demanding independence from the empire

– specifically Slavic nationalists who represented the majority of their subjects.

Confirming that threat was The First Pan-Slav congress that was held in Prague, Bohemia in June, 1848,

during the revolutionary movement that same year.

The Pan-Slav congress was disbanded after young inhabitants of Prague had taken the streets

and in the confrontation killed the wife of Field Marshal Alfred I.

The city was then seized and martial law was established throughout Bohemia.

Pan-Slavism among South Slavs was a little bit different and in a way more successful

– for a certain period at least.

One of the differences was that Czech and Slovak delegates were both anti-Austrian

and also anti-Russian,

while South Slavs would often turn to Russia for support.

Austria feared that Pan-Slavists would endanger the empire.

In Austria-Hungary Southern Slavs were distributed among several entities;

there were Slovenes in the Austrian part (Carniola, Styria, Carinthia, Gorizia and Gradisca, Trieste, Istria (also Croats)),

Croats and Serbs in the Hungarian part within the autonomous Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia

and in the Austrian part within the autonomous Kingdom of Dalmatia,

and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, under direct control from Vienna.

Now Southern Slavs had different goals,

Slovenes and Croats were closer to an alternative to Pan-Slavism - Austroslavism,

Serbs however, considering they had ties to the independent nation state of Kingdom of Serbia,

they were among the strongest supporters of independence of South-Slavs from Austria-Hungary

and uniting into a common state under Serbian monarchy.

In 1863, Dimitrije Matić, president of Association of Serbian Philology talked about the creation

of an ethnically "pure" Slavonic people.

He said: with God's help, there should be a whole Slavonic people

with purely Slavonic faces and of purely Slavonic character«.

After World War I, Kingdom of Yugoslavia was finally established under Serbian royalty of the Karađorđević dynasty.

They managed to unite Southern Slavic-speaking nations regardless of religion and cultural background.

The only ones who didn't unite with were the Bulgarians.

There however was an idea to create Greater Yugoslavia by to incorporating Bulgaria,

however the idea was abandoned after the split between Josip Broz Tito and Joseph Stalin in 1948.

This led to some bitter sentiment between the people of Yugoslavia and Bulgaria in the aftermath.

At the end of Second World War, the Partisans leader Josip Broz Tito,

a Croat, became Yugoslav president, and the country become a socialist republic.

Tito advocated Brotherhood and unity which meant equality among the ethnic groups,

including non-Slav minorities.

This led to relatively peaceful co-existence and prosperity

until the breakup of the federation that as most of us know wasn't as peaceful.

Now to cut through all the history lesson, what does Pan-slavism and Neo-slavism actually means?

Pan-slavism is basically idea of uniting all Slavic or Slavic-speaking people under one banner.

Essentially, the goal of Pan-Slavism was or still is, to create a single-nation state.

As Germany, Italy and many other countries did.

For example Germany before 1864 was split on many terriories and today they are all Germans.

Same with Italy for example.

Anthropologically Italians aren't all the same, there's a difference between north and south Italians.

Genetically there is!

And yet they are all Italians.

Anyways, you guys get the idea.

The problem with Pan-Slavism however is that since Russians represent approximately 50% of total Slavic population

this would probably mean all the other Slavs would eventually have to adopt russian cyrillic alphabet

and their language.

And guess what, many people aren't really fond of that.

Neo-Slavism however supports the idea that all Slavic countries should keep their regional identity,

culture, whatever.

Obviously since I'm a Slovenian, from a country with a little bit over 2 million inhabitants I'm closer to this idea

since I want my grandchildren to speak Slovenian.

There however is a little bit of a twist!

Although I'm closer to Neo-Slavism, until we all unite under one banner there will always be conflicts.

It's just the nature of people.

The bigger will always aim to overpower the smaller.

For example if we all join with Russia probably they will overpower us,

if we remove Russia, probably Poland will try to overpower the rest.

It's not evil, it's just how things are.

And this is Neo-Slavism, we keep our regional identity but really one will always be over us.

There will always be a »fight« between countries why this country have more delegates

and accept important decisions and why our votes don't count.

That's how this work.

Pan-Slavism however would after generations and generations of mixing mean a true single-state.

Slavic state.

There's however also a shitty side to it.

With this all the beautiful traditions, languages of smaller countries would eventually be gone.

And that's unfortunate because I respect every Slavic world, I respect the diversity

and I love seeing the different traditions of Slavic countries.

It's really hard for me to say what idea I'm closer to,

but at least now I hope you guys understand the difference between the two.

This video came to an end. What do you guys think?

What idea do you think is better?

Do You Watch Porn? | Taboo | Refinery29 - Duration: 5:15.

When I start thinking about taboos,

there's one that comes to mind: porn.

You know what I mean.

Sexually explicit material, erotica, adult movies, the works.

But in this day and age with tons of varied

pornography available to all of us with a

single click of a button, is porn becoming less taboo?

Hi guys.

I'm Laura, and I do watch porn.

I do watch porn.

I watch porn.

A lot of porn.

Who doesn't?

I don't watch porn actually.

I am like pro-masturbation and pro-sex positivity,

but porn just doesn't fit in to my practice.

I was probably 15.

It was probably like 2 a.m. on a Friday.

And I was just watching late night HBO and

then all of a sudden porn.

My brother when I went to college gave me

his old computer filled with vintage porn

from the 1970s.

I remember a time before the internet.

I'm old enough to remember that point.

When I first started looking at porn,

it was probably Victoria's Secret catalogues that

came in the mail.

Back when there were tons of pop-ups on the

internet, something just came on the screen

and I didn't know what I was looking at.

I just knew that it needed to get away.

When doing research there were a variety of

statistics about the number of women who watch

porn.

And it makes you wonder, are women ashamed to admit it?

I think all women honestly watch porn in some

kind of capacity.

If it's not physically watching it,

then they're probably reading about it in a book.

In cities and in a little bit more liberal

locations, people aren't as embarrassed

to talk about their porn habits.

Every one in five people on their phones or

on the internet is looking at porn.

It's not taboo.

The politicians in the right wing media make it taboo.

I think porn is taboo for women because masturbation

is taboo for women.

There is a lot of conversation when we're

kids around women's sexuality and around women's

bodies that like, "Nope, you're not

supposed to touch there.

Nope, you're not supposed to look at this."

Watching porn goes against all of those things.

News flash, women masturbate… a lot.

So how does porn and feminism intersect?

Well here at R29 we strongly believe that

you can be a feminist who enjoys porn.

I've been trying to skew my porn habits

towards sensual, female-oriented porn.

Feminist porn is pornography that is created

by females through a female lens.

Male gaze engineered pornography has a lot

of problematic aspects.

Feminist porn is a kind of antidote to that.

I think that's really important that that

exists for those people who might feel like

typical, classic porn is just not an accurate portrayal.

I could be a feminist.

I could be intelligent.

I could be witty.

And I could still watch porn.

I could still be sensual.

I could still be a pole dancer if I wanted to.

When you take porn into your own hands as

like, "I'm going to watch something for me,"

that right there is the tenace of self-care feminism.

I definitely think that porn does produce

unrealistic expectations of women.

Men expect women to orgasm every time we have sex.

Sex is a lot more awkward than porn makes it.

Pornography is a fantasy in a weird way for the viewer.

I mean for the workers, it's a job.

It definitely helps to normalize some taboo topics,

and also some taboo kinks or sex acts.

These are things that people are interested in.

Maybe you should try it.

Maybe you're not into it.

Maybe you don't try it.

Maybe you have a conversation with your partner

and see if you both land on something.

I think it just opens up a door to possibly

giving your bedroom life a little extra.

It became pretty clear that porn plays an

integral part in people's relationships too.

I have watched porn with a partner in the past.

The conversation around it to begin with is always finding common ground.

My favorite pastime was watching porn with

one of my lovers.

It's too distracting because I'm like,

"Wait, what're they doing?

Okay I got to do that.

Oh no that's not what they're doing."

And then you're like, "Is this person enjoying it?"

There's a lot happening at once.

It definitely is a productive conversation

to have with your partner.

To just get on the same page and figure out

some things you might want to try.

We've talked about the types of porn that we're interested in.

Just because it's a really easy entry way

for me to kind of talk about the things that turn me on.

You should definitely be willing to talk about

it if you're in any sort of committed relationship.

Because what you're into definitely does

have an effect on your relationship with your partner.

We live in a society where we judge so quickly

and I think there's nothing wrong with exploring pornography.

In order to make porn less taboo, you have to talk about it.

Talk about it with your partner, because you

might be surprised how many people share your

views or have the same sort of feelings that you do.

Use pornography as a way to enhance your sex life.

Don't make it the thing that changes your

whole sex life because as you know it's

lighting, it's a camera,

it's studio, whatever.

But take parts of it.

Go on the internet.

Be alone.

Definitely make sure you do incognito.

Type in something.

Be like I want to see romantic porn and just enjoy, look, feel.

Love yourself.

God, that should be a t-shirt.

So don't be afraid to explore.

It's easier to embrace your sexuality if you know what's out there.

Use porn as a tool for yourself and your relationships,

but remember, porn is a production—

like this set.

Create an unforgettable business card that will easily make you stand out from the crowd? - Duration: 8:58.

Are you stuck in the sea of sameness? What? Do you know what I'm talking about?

When you're handing out your business cards is it like everybody

else's? Look, you would think this is a stack of my business cards. They all look

the same, right? No. These are business cards that I picked up over the last two

days at two small events that I went to for people in the real estate industry.

What's different about them? It's the same thing I get when clients come to me to

help them design their business cards. They want a horizontal

business card or a vertical business card or map paper or they want it to be

glossy or rounded corners or straight corners. The paper thick or thinn or maybe

some linen paper. Put my picture on it. Don't put my picture on it, right? There's

small subtle differences but at the end of the day when you hand a business card

out, it's the sea of sameness. It all looks the same. I don't want you to be

stuck there so that's what I want to help you with today.

My name is Shana Anderson-Nute, I'm the President of Spitfire Advertising. This

is what we help you with. We help you grow your business, build better

relationships, we help you with your marketing, we help you stand out so

you're not stuck in that sea of sameness like your competitors and everybody else

around you. When you hand out your business card. I want the person that you

give them to say... oh wow! never received anything like this That's cool. That got

my attention. That's going to make you memorable. I'm

going to show you some examples of different cards in different ways that

you can do this and it's not expensive. Okay this is a stack that when they come

home from their event they went to just sits on their desk. If I'm like oh I

met this guy named Steve. What did his card look like? How I'm going to find Steve? I

have to go through all this. I don't want that for you. I want it to be quick and

easy. People want fast right? We know that attention span of a goldfish. Help them!

Help them! Make you memorable help it easy to find your card. I met this guy

a couple hours ago. He is an insurance agent. What would be great for him to do?

It would be great for him to do an RFID you protector. He could actually

imprint this like a business card or he could put his logo on and just put his

business card inside. An RFID protector this protects the person's driver's

license number, their credit card information, from identity thieves so

they can't be read by the readers. Inexpensive, but how does that change the

game for him? It helps a lot. The next example, coach and personal growth

strategist. What would be good for him? How about doing a plant a tree card so

there's a download on the back. They go on a website. They choose anywhere in the

world they want to plant a tree and then they keep this card because now it's

imprinted like his business card and this is a place for them to wind up

their headphones. They're not a tangled mess and every time they use it, they're

thinking about you. Don't you think this is way more memorable than this business

card? Okay this is a dentist, regular old business

card. But what if instead this dentists did lip balm and said hey let me

brighten your smile, right? This would be something that's definitely going to get

their attention, over this. A real estate agent. There are so

many business cards they all look the same. This one's got a good size photo

which is nice, right. But they all look the same.

What about doing a card that has a message. This one says "Wake up and be

awesome" on the back has some eco friendly tips and this shovel... that's

seeded paper. Plant it and flowers grow. Talk about beautifying your home. Yeah I

want to make your world a better place. I want to make your world more beautiful.

There you go this could be the business card. This can be imprinted however you

want including a message on the back and the picture and everything that this

business card holds, it's going to be stacked on the desk. This

won't be. This is going to stand out. They want to talk to this person, they know.

Pull this out it. It doesn't fit in the stack on the desk.

Okay two more this person's company that their tagline says improve everyday.

Going back to that tangle-free card, well this one is a

music download card. We know that if we start our day with meditation with music,

that we are more productive. We get our spirits up early. This is the music

download card. Imprint that. Imprint this on here hand it out. Start their day with

that their favorite song. They get to download what they want or you can

recommend something if you want this to be you know a meditation. Have it have

them say download this meditation. Start your day off of this. There you go.

Microfiber cloth this is one of my cards I hand out. It says no I am smiling

and they have to open up to figure out why I'm smiling. When they open it up,

look at the imprint area on this. I could fit a lot more than a business card can

fit on it. It says because I love helping awesome people like you whether you want

notice I'm not saying buy my product buy my service. I'm telling you what you can

get. Whether you want more referrals, you want to motivate your sales team, or open

doors with new prospects. I'm always here to help you with your marketing goals

and I have it signed like a signature and it has my contact information on it.

This business card is actually one of my really good friends. I love her to death.

Great picture on the front. She does a lot of great things with her card.

Her company is called Writing Made Simple, because it doesn't have to

be hard. Says best-selling author, writing

coach, ghostwriter, TEDx, and keynote speaker, has her contact info, her social

media handles, all of that will fit on this and more and not be crowded and

I love that underneath she said she doesn't just say but this is what I can

do she tells this in a story "Are you tired

of struggling with your writing? What if writing were easy? Well, it can be.

Release the scribe within and claim your free video to see how" with her bitly

link. She's driving them, she's handing them

a car - she's driving them online to capture their information which is

basically saying please raise your hand and tell me if you're interested in

using me for your products and services instead of just having this business

card lay around. You see how this will be different on the microfiber cloth. She

has more room for it. It makes her stand out and then she has

her marketing piece on the back to really capture them and get them to go

someplace so she can start leading them on this journey with her. I hope that

this helped you. I want you to think about your business card go ahead grab

it out. Look at it right now. Is it the business card that's going to fit on the

stack on my desk? Is it? Or is it something like this or like this or like

this or like this or like this that's going to stand out, that's going to make you

memorable. That is going to cause excitement in the person curiosity when

they receive it. That's what I want for you! Please please look at your business

card. Let's change your business card. Reach out to me so I can help you. These

are just a few of the ideas. You should see the one I'm going to come up

with next. Actually I am NOT going to tell you what it is. I'm just one of these

times I'm going to shoot a video and I'm going to show it to you. But I can come up

with business cards in all different categories that are alignment with your

brand, and alignment with your business, that will make people excited to receive

it and not get you stuck in the sea of sameness on the stack on the desk. Don't

forget to follow us on our social media. We are here to help you with your

marketing goals and to help build deeper relationships. Remember get on my

email list so you get these tips because there's things on my email list that

nobody else gets. Because my special people they're on my email list. If

you don't remember anything else, do me one favor. Remember to smile because happy

looks good on you. Have an amazing day!

[SUBSTANCE DESIGNER] Levels Node - Know Your Nodes - Duration: 6:19.

Hello guys!

while I was writing a script for a new video of "Substance Designer Tips and Tricks"

I noticed I needed to explain some details that seemed kind of extra to the actual script of the video,

so instead of adding the explanation,

I thought it was a good opportunity to start a new series called "Know your Nodes"

in which I'll try to explain in detail each available node in Substance Designer.

This first video will be about the Levels node,

so let's begin!

The main objective of the Levels node is to modify the histogram of an image,

you can think of an histogram as a bar chart with an "X axis" of all the possible values of a color channel

and a "Y axis" that shows the total number of pixels with that value,

for example in this 5x5 greyscale image

we have five (5) black color pixels,

thirteen (13) 50% grey pixels

and seven (7) white color pixels.

If we use a color image instead of a greyscale,

as I said before since you have all the possible values per channel

instead of having one histogram you'll have four:

one for red channel,

one for green channel,

one for blue channel

and one for the alpha.

Now that we understand how to read histograms let's go back to Substance Designer.

When you double click the levels node you'll find two parameters:

the first one will be the channel selection, here is where you choose the channel you want to modify

if you are using a color image,

you can adjust the red green, blue or alpha channel independently

or you can use the luminance to modify the red green and blue at the same time

if you are using a greyscale image you'll only have the luminance channel.

The second parameter is a graph with five arrows; three at the top and two at the bottom

you can think of the top arrows as an Input Remap and the bottom as an Output Remap,

in other words the top ones control all the adjustment operations to the input image

and the lower ones just do a final remap of the results of those operations before generating the output.

To understand it better let's check how each arrow works

The input mid arrow defines the 50% value point,

it means that all the values to the left of the arrow will be remapped to the 0 to 0.5 range

and all the values to the right will be remapped to the 0.5 to 1 range

for example if we move the arrow towards the left

all the pixels that are lower will be remapped to the 0 to 0.5 range

and the higher, to the 0.5 to 1 range

so most part of the original input will be part of the higher half,

if we move it to the right,

the same happens, but now most part of the histogram will be in the lower half.

In practice the result is that if you move the arrow to the left,

more values will be part of the 0.5 to 1 range

and as consequence the image will become brighter,

if we check the histogram we can see how the graph moves to the right which is the color white

and if you move the arrow to the right

more values will be part of the 0 to 0.5 range so the image will become darker,

as you can imagine, in this case the histogram graph will move towards the left which is the color black

now lets talk about the input left and input right arrows…

their function is to clamp the histogram,

what I mean by clamp is that for example if you move the input left arrow to the right

all the values that are equal or lower to the arrow position will be considered a value of 0

which is full black,

and if you m ove the input right arrow to the left

all the values equal or greater than the arrow position will be considered a value of 1 which is full white,

moving this arrows will also remap all the values between them to the 0 to 1 range

while considering the input mid arrow position as the 50% value as we explained earlier,

in practice this will result in an increased contrast of the image as you can see here,

the values below the mid point will become darker

and the values above the mid point will become brighter

now if we check the histogram of the output, the graph is more balanced so it seems wider

as a side note, if you are wondering why at some point it seems like some values disappear

it's only the way the histogram is displayed,

since you are clamping the values, the ratio of gray pixels to full white or full black pixels increases,

so the length of the Y axis increases as well,

and as a consequence the display of the grey values is smaller in the screen,

you can test this by making a selection in the histogram of the values that are near the black,

originally we have 0.16% ,

if we increase the contrast the percentage of selected pixels will increase to 4.26%

and if we reduce it the percentage will decrease to 1.65%

anyway, let's continue with the output left and output right arrows,

these remap the range of all the resulting values of the input operations,

but unlike the input left and input right arrows that clamp to 0 and 1 the values that are not between them,

the bottom arrows will remap the full range of values without clamping.

for example,

if we move the output left arrow to the middle

all the values will be compressed to the 0.5 to 1 range

and the image will be brighter,

if we move the output right instead,

all the histogram graph will be in the 0 to 0.5 range

and the image will become darker

take into account that if we want more precision than dragging an arrow we can click the values button

in the parameters to set this values manually.

we also have an auto levels button,

this one will move the input left arrow to the position of the darker pixel in our input image

and the input right arrow to the position of the brighter pixel

all this while maintaining the top mid arrow at the defined center of the range

this helps a lot to maximize the colors we are using, because we won't waste any value between 0 and 1,

that is specially helpful when we are working with height maps

finally the last parameter we need to check is called intermediary clamp, this one is quite easy to understand,

sometimes depending on the image's format,

the pixel values can be negative or even greater than one,

if you set this parameter to clamp

the node will clamp those values

and end up with a range from 0 to 1 before doing any internal math operation,

if you set it to Passthru,

it won't clamp the input and the operations will be made with the original values of the input image

Well that's all for now in Substance Designer "Know Your Nodes"

I hope you liked this new series!

Listen Loud or Soft to Clavichord Recordings? + Studio Tour! - Duration: 10:13.

It is a long tradition to advice the buyers of clavichord recordings to listen to those

recordings at a low volume.

But is that really the best way?

In this video I'll give you my take on this, we'll take the opportunity to share with

you, in case you are not so familiar with recording techniques, some basic aspects.

So welcome to this channel that is all about exploring the music from Bach to Beethoven

and beyond, hopefully to inspire you on your journey as a musician or a music lover.

And in order to enable you and I to communicate, we have to make use of recording technology.

Whether it is through a simple shotgun microphone as I'm using now for relatively simple videos

like these, or a more complex and higher quality setup that we use for our recordings.

The motive for this topic came from many of you, over the course of the past months and

even year asking in fact two things that related to each other: how we make our recordings

and what we believe is important in making clavichord recordings.

Both questions are very close to each other, the only thing is, that recording a clavichord,

due to the nature of an instrument that sounds relatively soft, all aspects of the recording

chain become really important to get them right.

More on that in a second.

So indeed on many clavichord recordings, one finds the advice to listen rather soft to

the recording itself.

As for instance on these discs

or

even on a more recent CD, a very nice recording by the way, of Bach's Goldberg on clavichord

by Benjamin Steens.

I'll give you my personal way of listening at the end of this video.

First a bit of technique in simple words since how much I am intruiged by the process – and

how important I believe it is for musicians to understand the basics of it when recording

– I'm far from a technical specialist!

If that's no problem for you, let's go!

So it is essential to realize you basically have two different aspects on a recording:

the recording of the signal and the playback.

The first element – recording- is what the recording label has influence off, the second,

the way you listen, of course not.

Recording has three major stages : Number 1: the microphones.

In our case here : two Neumann microphones hang above the instrument, in a Blumlein configuration,

which I'll skip the explanation here for now.

A microphone basically is a device that transforms air pressure into electricity.

Center part of it is its diaphragm which is a really thin membrane that moves when air

waves hit its surface.

The tiny movement that occurs is being converted into a very very tiny electrical signal.

That signal, before it reaches you through your speakers, must be amplified really a

lot, as I've read even over a thousand times!

To amplify that initial electrical signal a first time, we use a preamplifier.

It does basically the same thing as your amplifier, but in the chain of recording and play back,

the quality of the preamp is what makes or breaks the recording.

Its choice is always a matter of preference, since all preamps sound differently.

We use a Presonus dual mono tube amplifier.

Dual mono is nothing more than to say that both channels, left and right are completely

separate from each other.

Now, what I sometimes read in the clavichord world, to record the signal of the clavichord

soft as well, simply is a technical mistake.

Any sound you want to record should be amplified to its maximum.

The reason is very simple: even when you use the best of the best equipment, you always

will have a certain amount of noise.

We think on analog (tape) noise then, but in fact all components of the recording chain

add noise.

Amplifying the sound signal at its maximum level (I won't go into detail here either)

will ensure the maximum distance between the noise floor and the sound signal.

Since we use in this stage our preamp for that matter, we can be sure that that amplification

is the best there is.

Imagine recording the signal very soft, so you would reduce the amplification initiatially

compared to ideal standards, it would imply you to turn the volume of your amplifier higher.

But then, you would not only amplify the sound signal, but the noise floor as well, leading

to a poor sound result.

So take this as a definition: if you record a clavichord, be sure to maximize the signal.

The preamp sends the signal out to a sound carrier.

That might be, as in our case, a taperecorder, a Studer A80 studio taperecorder.

A taperecorder works magnetical, the tape is covered by a zillions of metallic magnetic

particles.

The heads of the taperecorder convert the electrical signal through the magnetic head

into a wavepattern that can be read in reverse to get a playback signal.

Or it can be sent to a computer, with a so-called analog/digital converter in between.

The A/D converter does exactly what it's named after: taking the electrical (analog)

signal and convert that to the 1's and 0's of the digital world.

Also here: choice of tape, taperecorder and / or digital convertor will influence the

sound of your recording.

A different tape gives a different sound, but a different converter will give you a

different sound as well.

So a discussion on analog versus digital recordings based on "neutrality" of sound is in fact

a non-discussion.

Ones the signal reaches its stage of 1s and 0s, the color of the sound does not change

anymore, but before that stage, even the digital convertor 'interpretes' the color of the

original sound.

It simply is a matter of taste and what you like most.

There are more factors that influence the sound of your recording, but for now, let's

move to the final stage: listening.

This is much easier.

For listening you need a playback device: your computer, a CD player, a turntable, or

even a taperecorder.

Those devices will sent out a signal that needs its final amplification, for which your

amplifier is used.

Any device with the possibility of turning volume up and down has an amplifier.

And that signal is pushed out of loudspeakers of any kind.

As said, on that process of listening, the recording label has no influence.

That's up to you.

But now, do I personally listen soft or loud to clavichord recordings?

I'd say I'm far from the average listener.

I like listening to records from a certain distance, I like some space around my ears

( I know this sound weird), so I like the volume quit loud.

I also believe that especially a clavichord recording does not lose any of its original

qualities by listening loud because the level of details you can hear this way, certainly

if recorded really high-end, simply is stunning.

It is like sitting really close at the sound board.

Listening soft is an option if that is what you like, and in case of a really high-end

system it can produce stunning results, but be aware that details you would hear in real

life, even from a distance, can dissapear.

Which... again is a kind of coloring the sound, but if that is what appeals to you, why not?

A recording should be truthful in a way we can call it high- "fidelity".

But we might realize more that as with a photograph, a recording partly creates a new world, with

its own balances.

A sound result that is close to the original experience, yes of course we want that as

an end result, but at the same time we want the recording to work well with the premises

of the unique world of recording technology as well.

At the end: a recording should sound good when being pushed through our speakers.

The rest is...what we, of our brains make of it.

Hope this was helpful.

Do not hesitate to reach out in the comment section if you have more questions on this

endless topic!

And if this is your first time here at Authentic Sound, as important recording technology is

for the young label that we are, we focus more on music here, more in particular music

from Bach to Beethoven, even to Chopin, and if that music is close to you, I would love

to have you subscribed to this channel and then... we see each other soon again!

Bye!

Do You Like Papayas? You'll Be Surprised What Their Seeds Can Do for You

Papayas are a tropical fruit known the world over for their exquisite, sweet flavor and multitude of nutrients.

They're usually eaten once nice and ripe, since they don't taste very good when still green.

The pulp is the part that's usually used, whether eaten by itself or as part of a dessert or smoothie.

However, now many people also use their seed as a natural, economic way to improve their health and prevent illnesses.

While they're usually just thrown away, now people know that many nutrients are found in them with many benefits to your body.

For a fair and democratic Euro! - Duration: 3:54.

What is the euro family?

There's 341 million of us using the euro every day as our coin.

This means we can more easily travel to and get a job abroad in other euro countries.

It also means our economies are less vulnerable to currency speculators attacks

and therefore safer.

The euro has made 19 countries into a big currency family.

This European Union flagship project has created a common currency and free trade zone.

For this to work we need inflation, the increase of prices for things we buy,

to be similar across all 19 countries.

We also need each of these countries roughly exports as much as it imports.

When these two things don't happen, our currency family is destabilized

and unemployment, inequality, poverty rise and other problems follow.

Yes. The euro is still an incomplete project.

And for this reason, in addition to benefits, it has also meant trouble in recent years.

Being part of a community brings the benefits of cooperation,

but it also means when we are in trouble we have to think as a family,

because our well-being depends on each other's well-being.

Ministers from all the countries that use the euro meet often in what's known as the Eurogroup.

Sadly, in their decisions about our joint economy, cooperation and solidarity

are rarely a priority.

Even worse, their decisions are dominated by some countries.

In the recent past, the group of dominant countries in the Eurogroup

imposed austerity on ailing populations suffering from growing unemployment,

reduced access to free education and healthcare and even home evictions.

By imposing austerity, they made these problems much worse.

This was a tragedy for millions of Europeans.

Imposing austerity on some countries was the opposite to solidarity.

And when we don't act in solidarity, like a family, there are bad consequences for many.

In the last economic crisis, while some euro countries drowned in debt,

speculators exploited their misery to make profits.

Other countries in the euro family benefited from this misery too.

This is because those drowning in debt made other euro countries

appear more trustworthy to speculators:

this meant reduced interest rates for the powerful euro countries,

and therefore lots of savings.

Some countries suffer high numbers of unemployment, while others suppress wages so they can earn

more profits, at the expense of workers.

The way the euro economy is run determines whether we are in debt or not,

whether we have a job or not,

whether our communities suffer inequality and poverty, whether pensions are paid

and much more.

The time has come to make our euro economy crisis-proof and one based

in solidarity and full cooperation.

In fact this has become the new hot topic amongst politicians

European leaders are talking about it!

They promise to soon take concrete steps to reform our economy

so that the economic crisis we suffered for many years doesn't happen again.

We can't let politicians have this conversation without us!

A reform could be anything between a strengthening of existing rules

that mostly promote austerity for people and sabotaging between countries,

to new rules to become more cooperative and focused on the welfare of the people.

To achieve this, a movement of thousands of people is calling for a more ambitious EU budget,

more and better investment to create new jobs and to end inequality,

and a more democratic governance of our euro economies.

Behind the Scenes with JPL: Books On Belt - Duration: 2:03.

Hi I'm Allison McCarty and I am a librarian - in support services for the

Jacksonville Public Library

we are standing here in BOB which stands for Books on Belt and this is where all

the magic happens to get the books from our vendors and out to you guys.

So every day UPS comes and drops off hundreds of books in boxes to our department and our

staff unpack them and load them on these trucks to get them ready for processing

after we mark the books as received in our computer we put one copy of each

book on a truck and send them over to a cataloging department where our

cataloguers match up the books with the right records so you can find them in

the catalog and place holds. At our processing stations our processors take

the books from they're fairly blank beginnings and add in the spine labels

the genre labels and the branch labels that help you find these books on the

Shelf at your local branch

At our linking stations our linkers scan the barcode on each item to put it into

the catalog so you can find it at your local branch if there are any holds on

the books they fill the holes and send the books on to the next person waiting in line.

After the books are Received, Cataloged, Processed and Linked they come

down here to get sorted to go out to the branches we find the branches that

they're on hold for or the branches that they belong to and we put them in the

right bins to get where they belong.

Thanks for coming with me on a tour of Bob our Books on Belt area. From unpacking the books from the UPS truck

to sending them out to you guys at the branches we like to think we take good

Ryan Van Praet - Exercising After A Cardiac Event - Health Yourself Guide - Duration: 1:16.

I've never, you know knock on wood never had a cardiac event and I can only imagine I mean

any sort of injury-- what's the first thing you do you bang your finger? You grab it and you hold it close, right?

It's like a protectionism, and if if you've had some sort of cardiac event, I think the last thing you want to do is

is exert yourself, right? If you've hurt yourself you think the stiller I sit and the quieter I

am I'm gonna be good, but what we need to teach individuals is that, yes theres a period of time for that but you actually

need to get back at it and just keep your body going, your body wants to move and sometimes due to genetics

or lifestyle factors thats why you've ended up where you are with a cardiac event because there wasn't

enough moving in your past and so were gonna teach you that movement and exercise is a

good thing. So, its freezing is a natural thing and thats why we generally zoom along very

carefully because theres a lot of psychology behind the the physical aspect of it too.

Public Speaking How To: "Nothing Compares 2 U" - Prince vs. Sinead O'Connor - Duration: 4:53.

(upbeat music)

- Something pretty exciting happened

in the musical world last week.

Nothing Compares 2 U, the studio version

by Prince that has never been heard before

has been finally released. And what does it

have to do with public speaking?

Watch this video to find out.

Hello, I'm Victoria Lioznyansky,

and I help entrepreneurs overcome their fear

of public speaking and transform

into confident, compelling and captivating speakers.

In 1984, Prince recorded a song called Nothing Compares 2 U

and then rather than releasing it himself,

he gave it to his side project, a band called the Family.

They recorded it, they released it,

and it was kind of a B track, you know,

it was mildly popular but pretty much unknown.

And then in 1990,

Sinead O'Connor did a cover of that song.

She recorded the song, she recorded the video

and speaking in today's language, she broke the internet.

The song became number one hit in a lot of countries

and catapulted Sinead O'Connor to international stardom.

And while Prince performed his version live

in a few concerts, it was never released

and then finally, last week, a studio version

and some of his rehearsal footage got released

and it was amazing.

So the big question is whose version is better?

Was it the original recorded by Prince

or was it the cover

recorded by Sinead a few years later?

Both versions are breathtaking.

Both versions are powerful, both versions (faint speaking)

and both the singers are not just saying

those words with the music.

They actually live in the song.

They embody the song.

And both performances are absolutely incredible

and there is an audience for each of those performances.

So which one is better?

The answer is there is no competition.

There is no comparison; they stand on their own.

Even though it's exactly the same song,

exactly the same words, exactly the same music,

exactly the same message,

these two songs, these two versions

are completely and entirely different

and they resonate powerfully but differently

with each of their audiences.

So what does it have to do with public speaking?

Well, everything.

There could be somebody in your field,

could be a direct competitor, it could be huge influencer

who happens to have a message that's very similar

to yours and even if it was identical,

when your competitor is speaking on stage

or in a live video and when you are speaking on stage

or in a live video, you cannot go crazy

comparing you to the other person

because even if the message is identical,

there is no comparison and no competition.

You have your own cover and your own version

and the other person has his or her own cover,

her own version.

You are entirely and completely different

because each of you is bringing

you into the equation.

Same message, the difference is you.

So remember, there is no comparison.

There is no competition.

Each of us is absolutely unique

and as long as your message

is captivating, genuine,

compelling, nothing compares to you.

(uplifting music) I hope you enjoyed this video.
