Waching daily Apr 26 2018

Hi, I'm Stephanie.

Welcome to Oxford Online English!

In this lesson, you can learn how to talk about things you like or dislike in English.

What do you like doing most of all?

What's your favourite thing to do?

What things do you have to do regularly, but you aren't so keen on?

What about the things you can't stand doing?

Can you think of something you really hate?

During this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about things that you like and dislike using

clear, natural English.

Let's go back to a question you heard before: what's your favourite thing to do?

So, what kind of music are you into?

I'm a big fan of blues, classic soul, things like that.

I really love Billie Holliday and a lot of stuff from that era.

What about you?

I listen to a lot of different stuff, but what I really like is hip-hop.

Do you listen to music a lot at home?

Oh sure, all the time.

My favourite thing to do at the end of a long day is put on a record and just chill out

on the sofa with some good tunes.

Record?

You mean vinyl?

Of course!

There's no other way to listen.

I wouldn't go that far!

Music makes me happy wherever I am.

I can listen on my phone, at home, on vinyl, on CD…

I don't care.

I just like it!

Here, you heard several useful phrases to talk about things you really like.

Can you remember any of them?

If you really like something, you can say:

I really love…

I'm a big fan of…

What I really like is…

My favourite thing to do is… … makes me happy

In the gap, you can put a noun, or an -ing verb.

For example:

I really love seafood.

Or: I really love swimming in the sea.

This is true for all these phrases.

Look at two more:

I'm a big fan of 80s glam rock.

I'm a big fan of listening to music when I go jogging.

You can also vary some of these phrases, to make them stronger or weaker, or just to add

variety.

For example:

What I really enjoy is getting up late on a Sunday and going for coffee with friends.

My absolute favourite food is spicy chicken wings.

Doing yoga in the morning makes me feel good.

Okay, what about you?

Can you make some sentences using these phrases?

You can talk about music, or any other topic you like.

Pause the video and write down two or three sentences, using the language from this section.

Ready?

Let's move on to part two.

Where shall we go?

How about pizza?

Errgh…

I'm not keen on the pizza places around here.

There's a Chinese place nearby which is supposed to be alright.

Want to check it out?

Honestly, I don't like Chinese food so much.

I quite like Japanese food, though.

Are there any Japanese places around here?

No, don't think so.

That doesn't help then.

Indian?

Spicy food isn't my thing.

KFC?

Yeah…

KFC's alright.

Let's go to KFC.

So, we live in a town with all these great restaurants, and we're going to KFC?

Seriously?

What's wrong with KFC?

It's not bad.

Fine, let's go.

In this dialogue, you heard phrases to talk about low-level likes and dislikes.

If you like something, but not that much, how can you say that?

Here are the three ways you heard:

I quite like…

It's alright.

It's not bad.

The word alright doesn't mean that something is good by itself.

However, with a positive intonation, it can mean that you like something.

Again, you can use these phrases with a noun or an -ing verb, like this:

I quite like going for a short walk after lunch.

The film was alright.

This garlic sauce is not bad!

What if you don't like something?

What could you say?

Here are the phrases you heard in the dialogue:

I'm not keen on…

I don't like … so much … isn't my thing

Let's see how you could use them:

I'm not keen on horror films.

I don't like going to the gym so much.

Getting up early isn't my thing.

Again, you can use many of these phrases in different ways, by changing or adding words.

For example:

I quite enjoy cycling.

I'm not massively keen on that plan.

Spending hours sitting on the beach isn't exactly my thing.

What about you?

In our dialogue, we talked about food.

Can you use the language you've seen to make two or three sentences about yourself?

You can write about food, or any other topic.

For extra practice, say your sentences out loud.

Say them several times, until the pronunciation is comfortable.

Try to remember them, so that you can say them without reading.

This way, you'll remember the language better.

Pause the video and write your sentences now; start again when you're ready.

Okay, you've seen how to talk about things you like a lot, or things you like a little.

But what if you really don't have an opinion about something?

What a great movie!

What did you think?

It was okay.

You didn't like it?

I didn't mind it.

I've seen better; I've seen worse.

You're difficult to please, aren't you?

I thought it was amazing!

Don't you think he's a great director?

I really like everything he's made.

I don't have strong opinions about him.

So, what do you like?

Honestly, I haven't seen many movies that have impressed me recently.

I saw that new 'Blade Runner' film.

And, you didn't like it?

Meh…

I could take it or leave it.

You're annoying.

Anyway, what shall we do now?

Get a drink, or something to eat?

I'm not bothered either way, to be honest.

In that dialogue, I did not have a lot of strong feelings about, well, anything really.

Can you remember the words and phrases I used to express this?

Often, you can express this kind of idea just with a word or a gesture.

Imagine you're watching something on TV, and someone asks you if it's a good show

or not.

You can express that it's neither good nor bad by making a 'meh' noise and shrugging.

However, there are also some useful phrases you can use, such as:

It's okay.

I don't mind…

I don't have strong opinions about…

I can take it or leave it.

I'm not bothered either way about…

Like the phrases you've seen in other sections, you can use these with a noun or an -ing verb,

except for I can take it or leave it, which is a fixed phrase, meaning that you can use it

as a response to someone else's question or suggestion.

Let's see how you could use these phrases to talk about different things:

The modern art museum was okay.

I don't mind doing housework.

I don't have strong opinions about which curtains we buy.

I'm not bothered either way about where we go.

When you use okay, like the word alright, a lot depends on your intonation.

The word okay literally means 'not good and not bad'.

However, with positive intonation, it can have a positive meaning, like quite good.

With negative intonation, it can mean something like not very good.

Listen to the difference: It's okay!

It's okay.

It's okay.

In this way, okay can mean different things.

Also, the phrase I'm not bothered either way is more informal, and could sound rude

or dismissive if you use it in the wrong situation, so think about where you are and who you're

talking to before you say it.

So, it's your turn to practice again!

Can you think of a movie or TV show that was just okay—not that good, and not that bad?

Your job is to write three sentences about yourself using the language from this

section.

If you can't think of a movie or TV show to talk about, you can choose a different

topic.

Pause the video and write your sentences now.

Okay?

Finally, let's see how you can talk about things you hate.

That's IT!

I'm finished with that place.

I'm definitely quitting this time!

I can't work there another day.

What happened now?

He is the worst manager ever!

I can't stand working with him.

I used to like going to work, but now I absolutely hate it!

I have to find another job.

You know you've been saying that for…

Ooh…

Since I met you?

Yeah, but this time I mean it.

Even the little things are starting to drive me crazy, like the way he fidgets with his

coffee cup when he talks.

So, have you started looking for a new job?

Not yet, but I will.

I need a change.

What about your colleagues?

I thought you got on well with them.

Some of them are alright, but I have no time for that woman in the accounts department.

I really dislike the HR guy, too, whatever his name is.

You know, maybe you should be less negative.

If you go to work with that kind of attitude, I'm not surprised you clash with people.

What do you mean, negative?

I can't stand people telling me what to do!

What are you even talking about?

I have no time for people like you and your stupid advice…

Okay, here you heard a lot of phrases to talk about something—or someone—you strongly

dislike.

Can you remember any of them?

If you really dislike something, you can say:

I can't stand…

I absolutely hate… … drives me crazy.

I have no time for…

I really dislike…

As before, you use these phrases with a noun or an -ing verb.

For example:

I can't stand people who cut in line.

I absolutely hate every song he's ever made.

Walking behind someone who walks really slowly drives me crazy!

Some of these phrases are more general.

You can use I can't stand…, I absolutely hate…, or I really dislike… to talk about

anything: people, things, or activities.

However, with the other two phrases, you would use them to talk about people and

their habits.

For example:

She's always late, which drives me crazy.

I have no time for people who say nice things to your face, then gossip behind your back.

Okay, what about you?

It's your last practice: pause the video, and write three sentences about things you

strongly dislike.

Use the language from this section, and start again when you're ready.

How was that?

Could you use the language easily?

Did you check to make sure you didn't make any mistakes?

Finally, we have a question for you: what do you like or dislike most about studying

English?

In some of the environments and societies we encounter.

We will usually find a quiet person, which may be said to have their own traits.

Several signs that shows someone is a quiet person such as like to be alone, rarely talk,

Often we meet our friends, both in school, and in the college.

This type of quiet person is often found happy to be at the end of the class road or corner

of the class.

For a moment as you stare intently at them, they give an empty look, yet some people think

that it is adorable gaze because it is so mysterious, which makes you want to immediately

This kind of quiet more to the empty gaze full of lust and frightening air.

They are anxious as if their presence may be damaging to the atmosphere.

There are many things worried them.

Usually, this kind of quiet person is not good in the conversation for fear of being

able to make awkwardness.

They cannot interact because they are too concerned about things that do not necessarily

happen.

So, they think it would be better to be quiet.

Quiet persons usually have a world of their own that is different from what most people

like.

quiet person, and vice versa.

Why we should hustle less and celebrate ourselves more often - Duration: 8:36.

hey everyone nick is here in this video I wanted to talk about why we should

hustle less pay less attention to the outside world and celebrate ourselves

much more often okay let me start off by asking you a question

think about your Facebook feed right now specifically about all the ads that are

clear on your Facebook feed how many of those ads tell you that you lack

something how many of those ads tell you that they've got a perfect solution for

something that you're lacking or something that you're not doing they

give you large promises and I think the main thing that they do of course they

might have really good advice well you would hope so that we have really good

advice but what I find a lot of them what I find a lot of them are doing is

they create fear in you they tell you what you lack very few of them tell you

how awesome you are how amazing you are at what you're doing that you've come so

far and the thing that they're doing you the thing that they do for you is just

tell you that hey you don't have this many clients or if you don't have this

much revenue while you kind of like missing out look at me I'm so awesome

and I can definitely teach you how to get to so many clients and I mean the

society really supports you I mean the society really supports that belief of

it you should have so many clients you should have so much money and the

society really tells you to hustle more and work more a lot of people a lot of

advertisers little marketers tell you to hustle more and do more things never

stop never asleep you know not very many people tell you to pay attention to

where you are celebrate where you are celebrate your wins and how you can

approach your goals from the place of love and abundance the most of the time

they tell you that you probably like something

and I think for that reason we have to be much more mindful about all the

things that we consume online of course there is a lot of good advice out there

but there's just so much of it and I think since we are so engaged in this

hustle mentality and you know everybody around us tells us that we're not good

enough we're missing out something we should hustle more we are very eager to

jump on yet another program and another email subscription and another webinar

and I think we should be mindful of what we are doing it's impossible to sign up

for all of those great programs no matter how much money we have it's you

know what's more relevant is our time and our presence in our consciousness

and so I think this is why I being mindful and really understanding what

are you doing and paying attention to very particular things while also

assessing how will that information serve you is so essential to staying

present - staying calm - being true to yourself rather than taking action out

of place of lack and scarcity another thing that I would like to invite you to

do is to celebrate yourself celebrate where you'll currently are not a lot of

people talk about this but you are amazing there is only one of you you do

something much better than most other people

you have your specific approach to whatever you do I think this deserves a

lot of celebration we are very eager to tackle all of our goals once we're done

with something we are ready to jump to the new one to the new goal and you know

how our to-do list just never ends there's always something for us to do to

challenge us to you know make things better it just never ends that's kind of

the purpose of life and so I think it's important to pause after each win no

matter how small the thing is and celebrate pause and just think about

okay I've done this I'm amazing you know acknowledged

and feel proud of yourself you feel proud that you've done that thing cause

I think with time you know we hustle so much we stop paying attention to each

goal that we have a chance once one goal is done we have 25 more to conquer and

with time we kind of stopped feeling proud of each single achievement and you

know our self-esteem might suffer later on and why would we want to achieve

things because you know it stops feeling fun anymore stops being fun anymore

so why bother what I would invite you to do is to make a list of all the cool

accomplishments that you've done in your life no matter how small or big those

are just make a list and stamp it into the wall and you know just rethread once

in a while preferably every day and just think and

acknowledge to yourself how awesome you are so make that list

put it on your wall and every time you read it feel proud of all and each

accomplishment that you have done before and feel proud of yourself this I think

is a very healthy way of increasing self-esteem and doing love for yourself

another thing that I would invite you to do is to get some more awareness of

every single thing that you accomplish no matter how big or small that thing is

and take a little bit of time after you complete something and celebrate it just

give yourself a high-five or pat yourself on the back and say hey I'm

awesome I've done this thing or find a celebration partner some of the chicken

senic weeks have text with saying that hey I just had this meeting and it went

amazing high five so that the other person would high-five

you back and celebrate you he kind of creates very good energy and gives you

more positive emotions and reinforcement for continuing to get really good things

done in the future I think very often after being heavily

affected in influenced by our society we end up alone and we try to tackle over

all of our goals alone in the proud solitude well I think this is not the

best definitely not the easiest way to become successful to get lots of really

positive things done is if we were if we are alone and we're doing something

really cool and new and something that's not widespread in the society at that

moment of time they might not be very many supporters of what you're doing

like the things that I do with spirituality my mom thinks it's a waste

of my life not the best encouragement in the world and so when you're alone when

you've isolated it's hard to continue doing whatever you're doing without much

support but when you have friends who celebrate you who acknowledge you and

who provide you with energy to get you going that celebrate your wins and help

you out when you fall and stumble that's the best environment to get really good

stuff done and to become successful and move forward and develop further so

these were just a couple of thoughts on paying less attention to very allowed

surroundings that we have currently pay less attention to your Facebook feeds

pay more attention to yourself celebrate yourself try to feel more grounded try

to feel yourself with yourself and try to feel proud of yourself and celebrate

yourself more often anyway I believe you with that talk soon

Making your home safer - Duration: 1:09.

Hi, I'm Matt.

And I'm Jacqui.

And we've got two young children.

And this is our pretty typical three bedroom suburban house in New Zealand.

You're so busy as a parent, particularly with young children and especially more than one.

There's always something else to do.

There is always something that you're focused on doing and getting done.

Securing your home for earthquake safety, might seem pretty daunting at first

but actually when you get down to it, it's actually pretty easy.

It doesn't take long at all.

No, you took the kids to the store and bought all the things.

Yeah.

Came back and.

Sort of 25 minutes later it was done.

I think when you finally get all of the major stuff done, you do feel like you're that little bit more prepared.

You feel like you've made your children safe, you feel like they have a safe place to be. And you've made that for them.

Just being that little bit more prepared, kind of makes you think, ah yeah,

I'm pretty happy about that.

I must be doing it right.
