주민들은 이 불지옥에 꼼짝없이 갇혀 있었고, They were trapped inside this burning inferno
몇몇 사람의 용기, and had no hope of surviving

진정으로 놀라운 것은 그가 얼마나 많은 사람을 구했는지, 어떻게 그 일을 해냈는지뿐만 아니라 And what's truly amazing is not only how many this man saved and how he did it,
그의 영웅적인 이야기가 확산되는 것에 대해 그가 어떻게 대처했는지입니다. but also how he handled himself once the story of his heroism spread.
2015년 1월 10일 오전 9시 30 분, 대한민국 의정부시에서 On January 10, 2015 in Uijeonbu-si, a small city in South Korea,
간판업을 하는 이승선씨가 출근길에 운전을 하고 있었습니다. Seung Suhn Lee was driving to his work hanging up signs at 930 in the morning.
빨간 신호에 걸려 차를 세웠을 때, When he stopped at a red traffic light,
그는 멀리서 하늘로 솟아 오르는 검은 연기를 발견했습니다. he noticed black smoke billowing up into the sky in the distance.
그는 주위를 살펴보고 연기가 나는 지점을 찾아냈고, He scanned the area and found the source -
그것은 한 아파트에서 발생한 화재였죠. it was a residential building that was on fire.
대부분의 사람들이 기이한 호기심으로 그저 한 번 보고 지나쳐갈 때, When most people would have just passed by staring with morbid curiosity,
이승선씨는 그 대신 본능적으로 위험한 재난 현장으로 뛰어들어갔어요. Seung instead drove instinctively to the dangerous disaster site.
그가 현장에 가보니 When he came to the spot he saw that
10층 아파트의 1층 주차장에 엄청난 불이 활활 타고 있었습니다. there was a raging fire on the ground floor parking lot of a 10 floor residential building.
그 화재에서 가장 무서웠던 점은 1층에서 시작한 화재가 위로 번지면서 But most horrifyingly the fire had engulfed the first few floors,
건물의 출구를 막았다는 것입니다. blocking the building exits.
어느 모로 보나 매우 나쁜 상황이었죠. It was a bad situation all around.
그때 갑자기 폭탄이 터지듯 뻥!하고 큰 소리가 났습니다. Then suddenly there was a loud boom like a bomb had gone off.
폭발음은 계속 이어졌어요. Then more explosive sounds.
이승선씨는 그것이 가스 누출 때문이 아니라 And Seung realized it was not a gas leak,
주차된 차량의 타이어가 화재의 열기로 인해 터지고 있다는 걸 깨달았죠. but the tires of the parked cars exploding.
그 모든 혼란 가운데서, Amidst all that sound and fury
그는 건물 안에서 살려달라고 외치는 희미한 목소리를 들을 수 있었습니다. he could hear the faint calls for help coming from inside the building.
그는 불타는 지옥에 갇힌 사람들을 안타까워하며 건물의 창문들을 살펴봤죠. He scanned the windows pitying the trapped souls in this burning inferno.
돕고 싶은 마음은 굴뚝같지만 무엇을 할 수 있었겠어요? He wanted to help but what could he do?
그는 건물에 들어갈조차 수 없었고, He could not even enter the building,
화염 때문에 건물 안으로 진입할 수도 없었어요. the flames had blocked any possible way in.
방법이 없었죠. It was futile.
그때 사이렌 소리와 함께 소방차 몇 대가 현장에 도착하기 시작했고 It was then with the sound of sirens growing louder that a couple of fire trucks had begun to arrive at the scene
이미 현장을 파악했던 이승선씨는 소방관들을 돕기로 했습니다. and Seung who had scoped the area already decided to do what he could to help -
구조 작업을 가장 효과적으로 시작할 수 있도록 소방차가 주차할 장소를 안내했지요. and directed the fire trucks where to park so they could start their rescue work most effectively.
그는 몇몇 소방관들이 소방 호스를 설치하고 가스 누출 가능성을 확인하러 He watched the small crews hustle to set up the water hoses
뛰어다니는 것을 지켜봤는데 and also check the area for possible gas leaks
그는 빠르게 번지고 있는 화염을 보면서 소방관들이 해야할 일에 비해 when he soon realized the huge growing fire engulfing such a large building
일손이 너무 부족하다는 것을 깨달았습니다. was too much for the number of firemen and what they had to work with.
아직 안에 있는 사람들에게는 암울한 모습이었겠죠. It was looking grim for those still inside.
설상가상으로 강한 바람이 불어서 To make matters worse the wind had picked up
옆에 있는 두 개의 건물에도 불이 옮겨 붙었습니다. and the two buildings next to it had also caught on fire.
다행히도 나중에 불이 붙은 건물에서는 사람들이 대피할 수 있는 시간이 있었지만 Luckily there was enough time to evacuate those
대피를 지휘하느라 소방관 인력은 더욱 부족하게 되었죠. but that would already spread the firemen's resources even thinner.
그때 이승선씨는 불이 난 두 건물 사이에서 누군가 외치는 소리를 들었습니다. Just then Seung heard a distinct cry coming from the alleyway space between the two buildings.
그건 3층 욕실 창문에서 필사적으로 도움을 청하는 한 젊은 남자의 목소리였어요. It was a young man from a third story bathroom window desperately looking for help.
그때 소방관은 3층까지 닿는 길이의 사다리가 없었습니다. The firemen didn't have a ladder long enough to reach him.
그때 이승선씨는 더 이상은 이렇게 그냥 서서 건물 안의 사람들이 And it was then that Seung realized he could no longer just stand around
산 채로 타버리는 것을 보고만 있을 수는 없다고 생각했죠. and watch doing nothing as people burned alive inside that building.
그래서 그는 자기 차로 뛰어가서 30 미터 길이의 밧줄을 가지고 왔습니다. So he ran to his car and grabbed a 30 meter rope that he used for work
비상 사태가 발생했을 때를 위해 싣고 다니던 거였죠. and kept with him just in case of an emergency.
그는 건물 사이 골목으로 뛰어가 He dashed into the alleyway
3층 화장실 창문에서 한 청년이 도움을 청하는 것을 봤어요. and looked up and located the young man begging for help from the third floor bathroom window.
이승선씨는 건물 벽의 가스 배관이 Seung then saw a gas pipe that went up the building,
운 좋게도 화장실 창문 옆으로 지나가는 것을 발견했죠. and it luckily passed next to the bathroom windows.
도둑처럼 가스 배관을 타고 올라가면 되겠다고 생각했어요. He thought to himself I'll climb the gas pipe like a thief.
그는 곧 가스관을 타고 올라갔는데, He quickly climbed up the pipe,
이승선씨가 3층을 지나쳐 4층으로 올라가자 그 청년은 혼란스러워졌어요. and the young man looked confused as Seung passed him and made it up to the fourth floor.
그때 이승선씨는 4층의 욕실 창문을 걷어차 깨트리고 Seung then kicked in the fourth floor bathroom window
한쪽 다리를 안에 넣어 자기 몸을 지탱했어요. and stuck one leg inside to brace himself.
그리고 이승선씨는 밧줄의 한쪽 끝에 풀리지 않는 특별한 매듭을 지었습니다. Seung tied one end of the rope into a special knot, and made it so it would not unravel.
그가 윗층에서 밧줄을 내려 3층의 청년에게 내려주자 When he lowered the rope to the young man,
그 청년은 화상을 입어 껍질이 다 벗겨진 자신의 손바닥을 내밀어 이승선씨에게 보여주면서 the young man showed him his hands which were so burnt that his skin had come off.
손이 이런데 어떻게 밧줄을 붙잡냐고 물었죠. He asked Seung how he could grab the rope.
이승선씨는 밧줄을 붙잡을 필요가 없고 매듭을 허리에 두르면 된다고 대답했어요. Seung told him not to grab it but wrap it around his waist
그리고 창문 밖으로 나오면 그가 아래로 줄을 내려줄 거라고 말했죠. and climb out the window and that he would lower him to the ground.
그 청년은 과연 이승선씨가 그걸 해낼 수 있을지 미심쩍었을 거예요. The young man of course couldn't believe that Seung would be able to do that.
이승선씨는 차분하게 말했어요, But Seung said to calmly,
"10초만 용기를 내면 살 수 있어요." "If you can be brave for 10 seconds, you can live."
그의 목소리에 담긴 자신감은 청년에게 자기 자신을 믿게하여 and something about the confidence in his voice made the the young man believe in him,
청년은 밧줄을 허리에 감고 창문 밖으로 나왔습니다. and he tied the rope around his waist and climbed out the window.
그때 한 소방관이 가스 배관에 매달린 이승선씨가 밧줄로 청년을 안전하게 내리는 모습을 발견했어요. And that was when a fireman saw Seung hanging off the gas pipe up on the fourth floor lowering the young man safely to the ground.
그는 자기가 본 것을 믿을 수가 없었죠. He couldn't believe his eyes.
그것은 단지 위험해 보여서가 아니라 It didn't just look dangerous
밧줄에 매달린 성인 남자를 어색한 자세로 버티며 내리려면 엄청난 힘이 필요할 테니까요. but the amount of strength it took to lower a grown man in that awkward position.
청년이 땅에 거의 다 내려왔을 때, 그 소방관이 안전하게 받아줬습니다. When the young man was close, the fireman helped him to safety.
이승선씨는 두 명의 젊은 여성을 추가로 창문 밖으로 꺼내 생명을 구했습니다. Seung also then helped two more young women escape with their lives out of that bathroom window.
세 번째 여성을 땅으로 내리는데, After the third woman was on the ground,
그는 위에서 더 많은 사람들이 도움을 요청하는 소리를 들었어요. he heard more cries for help coming from above him.
가스 배관을 붙잡고 올려다보니 When he looked up still hanging off the pipe,
6층, 7층 및 8층 창문에서 사람들이 보였습니다. he saw people from windows on the 6th, 7th and 8th floors.
그들은 겁에 질려있었고 미친듯이 손을 흔들어 그의 도움을 청했죠. They look terrified and desperate for help as they frantically waved to him.
불행하게도 그들의 창문은 가스 배관에서 멀리 떨어져 있었고 Unfortunately their windows were far from the gas pipe
이승선씨는 배관을 타고서는 그 쪽으로 못 간다는 걸 알았어요. and Seung knew he would not be able to get anywhere near them.
그러나 그는 죽게 될지도 모르는 사람들을 위해 절망하는 대신에, But then as he was looking up his eyes focused on the edge of the roof
옥상의 가장자리를 바라보면서 and instead of despairing for all the people who would die,
갑자기 아이디어가 떠올랐어요. he suddenly had an idea.
그는 신속하게 가스 배관을 타고 내려와 He quickly climbed down the gas pipe to the ground
옆 건물로 뛰어 들어갔습니다. and ran to the building next door.
불이 번졌음에도 불구하고 첫 번째 건물과는 달리 옆 건물은 Even though the fire had spread to it, unlike the first building,
입구가 아직 화염에 막히지 않아서 사람들이 대피하고 있었는데 the entrance was still clear, and as people were evacuating it,
이승선씨는 그 속으로 뛰어들었죠. Seung was rushing in.
그는 옥상으로 올라가서 He made it to the rooftop,
건물과 건물 사이를 훌쩍 뛰어 넘어 처음 불이난 건물의 옥상으로 건너갔어요. ran across it and jumped to the roof of the first building on fire.
그런 다음 그는 창문 밖으로 몸을 내밀고 도움을 청하는 사람들을 내려다 보면서 Then he looked down at the people sticking out of the windows screaming for help,
밧줄을 안전한 펜스에 한 번 둘렀습니다. and he tied his rope to a secure rail.
운 좋게도 30미터 길이의 그 밧줄은 딱 옥상에서 땅에 닿는 정도의 길이였죠. Luckily for them the rope was 30 meters which was just enough to get to them ground.
밧줄로 한 사람씩 땅에 내려서 그는 7명의 목숨을 더 구했습니다. One by one he lowered seven people to the ground saving their lives.
이 화재로 인해 결국 5명이 사망했고 126 명이 부상 당했어요. By the time, the fire was put out, 5 people had died and 126 were injured.
만약 이승선씨의 영웅적인 행동이 없었다면 희생자의 수는 3배가 넘었을지도 모릅니다. But the number of dead would have more than tripled if not for Seung's heroism.
그는 총 10 명의 목숨을 구해냈어요. He saved a total of 10 lives that day.
이 이야기에 대해 더 주목할만한 점은 What's even more remarkable about this story is that
언론이 그의 이야기를 보도한 후에, after the Korean media picked up on his bravery,
이승선씨의 용기에 감동받은 한 독지가가 있었습니다. a very rich person was moved by what Seung had done that day.
그는 이승선씨에게 연락해 3천만원을 주고 싶다고 했어요. He contacted Seung and said that he wanted to give him the equivalent amount of $30,000 dollars as a reward.
51세의 이승선씨는 현재 생계를 위해 간판업에 종사하고 있는데요, Now Seung was a 51 year old man who put up signs for a living.
그러니 아무리 생각해봐도 그렇게 부자는 아닐 거예요. He was not rich by any stretch of the imagination,
제 생각에는 분명 그에게 그 돈이 있었다면 쓸 데가 많았을 테지만, 그는 사양했어요. and I'm sure he could've used that money, but he refused.
이승선씨는 독지가에게 그 돈을 자기보다 더 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 기부하도록 청했습니다. He asked the rich person to donate that money to a charitable cause that would need it more than him.
이승선씨의 그런 반응은 아마도 독지가를 더욱 감동시켰을 거예요. His response would emotionally move the rich person even more.
연말에 한 기업에서 2015년의 시민 영웅을 뽑아 상을 줬습니다. Later that year, Korea awarded Seung the 2015 citizen hero of the year award.
거기서 이승선씨가 최고 시민 영웅으로 뽑혀서 (세금 제외하고) 천만 원 정도를 받게 되었는데 They also gave him $10,000 which he donated to an organization that helped service people
그 돈을 전부 군인과 소방관, 해경 등에 기부했어요. in the military, the fire and also the police departments.
그날 다른 영웅들도 있었지만, There were other heroes that day,
저는 특히 이승선씨의 행동에서 감동을 받았어요. but I find what Seung did awe inspiring.
그는 한국의 수백만 명의 사람들에게 진정한 영웅주의가 무엇인지, He showed millions of people in Korea what true heroism was
그리고 완전히 낯선 타인들 간일지라도, 한 사람이 다른 사람의 삶을 소중하게 여기면 and what could happen if people valued the lives of others
어떤 일이 일어날 수 있는지 보여주었습니다. even if they were total strangers.
한 사람이 자신의 생명을 걸고 도움이 필요한 다른 사람들을 위해 It was humbling to see a man risk his own life
그렇게 많은 일을 하는 것을 보면서 참으로 겸허해졌습니다. to do so much for others in their time of need.
우리는 일상 속에 숨어있는 이런 영웅들에 대해 잊고 지내는 것 같습니다. I think we forget about these everyday people whose instinct is to help others.
저는 가끔 궁금해요, 맨날 이기적이고 못된 사람들 소식만 듣기 보다 I often wonder if these acts of kindness and even bravery wouldn't happen more
이런 이야기를 듣는 시간이 더 많아지면 if we spent more time hearing about them
이러한 따뜻한 행동들과 용기가 좀 더 많이 일어나지 않을지요. instead of what all the selfish and bad people are doing.
저는 오스카상과 노벨상과 같은 권위있는 상을 통해 I think it's great that we celebrate artists and scientists
예술가와 과학자를 기념하는 것은 by giving them prestigious awards
멋진 일이라고 생각해요. like the oscars and nobel prizes
하지만 이승선씨와 같은 현실의 영웅들을 똑같은 수준에서 알아보고 축하하면 어떨까요? but why don't we also recognize these real life heroes at that same level so
어제의 뉴스로 흘려보내는 대신에 우리가 그들을 기억하고 축하하면 어때요? we can remember and celebrate them instead of letting them fade away like yesterday's news.
그렇다면 어쩌면 우리 아이들은 이 복잡한 세계에서 Then maybe our children will know that
서로를 돕고 친절하게 대하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 알게 될 겁니다. it's also important to help and be kind to each other in this complicated world.
그리고 우리 아이들은 타인에 대해 사심없이 너그러운 마음을 갖는 것이 쉽지는 않지만 They will know that being selfless and generous of heart to others might not be easy
그로 인해 인간이 선해진다는 것을 알게 될 거예요. but that it is those things that make us good.
