I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Barricade
Premium Replacement Soft Top with tinted windows, fitting all 2007 and up JKs.
There are a couple of different versions of this top.
One is for those of you with a 2007 to 2009 JK, and the other for those of you with a
'10 and up.
And of course, these are body style-specific, so make sure you get the right one for your
either two-door or four-door JK.
Today, we are going to talk you through the installation of the soft top, which I am going
to give 1 out of 3 wrenches.
This is going to snap right in place of your factory soft top on your factory soft top
frame.
There's going to be no drilling, no cutting, no major modification necessary to get this
installed.
It is a very straightforward and easy installation that shouldn't take you more than two hours
to complete.
We're also gonna talk through the construction and a few of the features of this top.
This soft top is for those of you who currently have a soft top on your JK.
This is going to be all of the soft materials, all three of the windows that are tinted,
and also the canvas top itself that is designed to snap directly in place on your factory
or factory-style soft top frame.
There are a couple of different types of soft tops available out there, so again, this is
for those of you who already have a soft top, who already have all of the soft top hardware.
If you don't have the soft top hardware, there are are tops available that are considered
to be a complete top.
They'll have all of the hardware, the frame, all of that other material that you'll need
in order to get a full soft top installed if you don't currently have one.
There's also the option for a frameless or fastback soft top that does not require a
factory-style soft top frame.
However again, this is for those of you who already have a soft top, you already have
the hardware and you're just looking for a replacement top.
Those of you who have a soft top know that especially if you leave your soft top on your
Jeep year round, it sits out in the weather, it is going to take a beating and eventually
the seams are gonna start coming apart.
It may have gotten ripped or cut off-road, so a replacement is something you're going
to have to do at some point.
And I recommend this Barricade premium replacement soft top over the Barricade standard replacement
soft top for those of you who do have the budget for it, because this is going to be
a little bit more expensive.
But those of you who are looking for something that's much more akin to the factory premium
top that you can get right out of the factory on the newer JKs, the standard material from
Barricade is very close to the standard soft top that you get from the factory, and this
is definitely going to be an upgrade.
You can tell right when you take it out of the package and look at it, but especially
when you feel it.
It's a much heavier grade material.
It's going to hold up better, it looks better, in my opinion, and it's also going to keep
down on noise and help to keep your warmth inside in the winter and your cool inside
during the summer because it is a bit of a heavier material.
If you're somebody who has your soft top on your jeep year round and it takes a good beating,
I would recommend, if you have the budget for it, going for the premium top because
I think it's gonna hold up better.
If you're looking to save a little bit of money, if you don't quite have the budget
for this, or if you're somebody who runs your soft top only during the summer months and
switches to a hard top in the winter, then you might be able to get away with the standard
Barricade top because your top isn't going to take as much abuse.
So as far as construction goes, this top is built very much like your factory soft top
is, and of course, it has to be.
It's designed to go right on that factory soft top frame, it's going to look factory,
but again, you are getting the upgraded material that does look very good, will hold up very
well, and has some great insulating properties also.
As you can see, everything is stitched in the same way that it would be from the factory.
You do have your tinted windows here, all of your zippers are big, heavy BP zippers,
you have Velcro in all of your factory locations.
Again, very much like a factory top.
It's gonna look just like factory, but it's going to look like a factory premium top because
it is the higher-grade material.
Like I said before, I am giving this a 1 out of 3 wrenches, and you will have to set aside
around two hours to get this installed on your JK.
The first step is going to be removing your factory soft top off of your soft top frame.
In order to do that, of course, you'll have to remove all three of your windows, you'll
have to have a Phillips head screwdriver handy or a screw gun with a Phillips tip, because
there are a few screws that you're going to have to remove to get the top taken off of
your frame.
Then, it's just a matter of reversing that process with your new soft top.
You're going to start at the front of the Jeep, attaching your new top onto your windshield
header.
From there, you can flip the top back, working from the front toward the rear, clipping it
and screwing it into place on your frame.
Finally, you'll install your new windows and you'll be done.
The only thing you'll have to be worried about when you're installing a soft top - and not
just this soft top, but really any soft top - is that you do it when the weather is warm.
It is recommended that you install this when the temperatures are over 70 degrees Fahrenheit
because the material will then expand, it'll be pliable, and it'll go onto the frame much
easier.
If you try installing this when it's colder, especially because it's new right out of the
box, it's not stretched at all, it is going to fight you.
You're definitely going to have a much harder time if you try installing this when it's
cold.
So if you're doing this in the winter time, a heated garage would be helpful.
If you're doing it in the summer, lay this out in your front yard, let it bake in the
sun for a few hours if you have the time.
It's going to make this much more pliable and trust me, it will pay dividends when you
go to do the installation.
As far as tools necessary to get this bolted up, really just a Phillips head screwdriver
and some patience.
And as far as time goes, right around two hours.
This premium replacement top from Barricade comes in at about $100 more than the standard
replacement soft top from Barricade, and in my opinion, that is a small price to pay for
the additional quality that you're getting from this higher-grade material.
As I said before, if you're comparing the two side by side, the second you take this
out of the box, you can tell it's a higher-quality material.
It has a nicer feel, it has a nicer look, it has better insulating properties, it'll
cut down on sound better.
Really, everything about this top is premium vs. the standard top from Barricade.
And again, I highly recommend it, especially if you're somebody who leaves your top on
year-round and wants something that's gonna hold up really well.
So if you currently have a soft top on your JK and you're looking for a replacement top
that is factory-style that will have all of the factory functionality, but is a higher
quality of material that's going to hold up better, look better, and have better insulating
properties.
I highly recommend taking a look at this Barricade replacement top.
This isn't going to be at the same level as, say, a Bestop premium top, because Bestop
does make the factory OEM tops for Jeep.
So that is going to be a step above, but it's also going to be significantly more expensive
than this top.
If this falls into your budget, I think this is a very nice top.
