DIY thaumatrope - Duration: 13:08.

DIY-Constructions about animation

Hi! I'm Vaggelis Karadimas from vktoons!

Either you like cinstructions in general

or you're interested in animation and you look for equipment or relevant constructions

I'm your man!

So, today we'll learn how to make a thaumatrope.

It's a simple making.

But in this episode we'll focus mainly to a variation of the thaumatrope,

and on a problem for which we found a practical solution.

Thaumatrope was patented back in 1824.

It's a very simple making.

On a cycle disk, we draw on both sides two different but complementing drawings.

Then, with velocity we turn the disk and the two drawings appear as one.

The most known example is that of a bird appearing to be in a cage.

Though it's a simple construction, it presents the basic principles on which even today

is based animation and cinematography in general.

It is about the "persistence of vision"

and that is related to a property of the brain to restrain the picture for a certain period of time.

This is the element that allows us to watch movement and not static pictures

no matter if we talk about animation, live action movies or tv etc.

Worh "thaumatrope" has a Greek root and it is a compound one. It compounds from the words

"thauma" (pronounced "thavma" and means "miracle") and the word "tropos", from the verb "trepo"

which means "to turn", "to spin".

So, we can say that word "thaumatrope" means "the miracle caused by spinning".

So, we'll make three variables of the thaumatrope.

The two of them are easy. One of them requires more work.

First, we'll see what materials we'll need.

Scissors.

Cardboard.

White A4 sized paper, ideally of 60 gr weight.

Glue.

Punch.

Pencil and an eraser.

A marker.

Coloured pencils or crayons.

Rubbers.

Compasses.

A protractor and a ruller or a set square.

And skotch tape or paper tape.

First, the simple makings.

With the compasses we make four equal circles,

one on the cardboard and three more on the A4 paper.

Then, we cut the circles with the scissors.

With the set square or the ruller - what we have in any case -

we draw the diameter of the circles.

We'll draw the diameter in both sides of the cardboard.

In one of the circles we'll draw the drawing full, as we want to appear in the thaumatrope.

So, that circle we'll use it as an example for the other two variables we'll make.

So, that will stay here.

The example we'll use in all three variables is a flying rocket.

What next? We'll take our rocket drawing and we'll put the other disk over it,

we'll make sure their diameters to coincide

and we'll copy the body of the rocket.

We can do this better if we place the two papers on a pane with enough light

so to watch better the trace.

We follow the exact same procedure to copy the flames of the gas on the other paper.

We draw with the marker upon the pencil trace on both drawings

and then we erase the pencil trace.

Now we'll add colour on our rocket.

Then, we put our drawings on the cardboard and we make sure the diameters

to coincide with the diameter of the cardboard.

Also, we are careful, because we could make this mistake;

to put the back drawing right in the back of the front drawing, so the picture will be wriong,

that is that the rocket and the flames will fall upon each other.

So, we make sure the two sides to be in the right place.

Then, we glue them on the cardboard.

With the punch, we open two holes on the two sides of the diameters.

We pass the rubbers through the holes and we make a loop.

In the second variable of the thaumatrope we follow almost the same steps as in the first.

But when we reach to the point of drawing the back drwings, the gas that is,

when we are to glue on the cardboard our two drawings,

cause of the movement of that kind of thaumatrope will be not on the horizontal axis

but on the vertical,we must make sure that the two drawings will be one right behind the other.

The movement will be done like that and it will appear right.

After we glue our papers on the cardboard, we take a pencil or a pen,

skotch tape of paper tape and we stick with tape the pencil on the cardboard

- well, I cheated here; I took a component of a compasses -

and then with our hands we turn forwards- backwards and watch our thaumatrope.

The third variable is more complex. We'll try to show the movement of the rocket in an angle.

If we take the first variable and we say that in order to show the rocket in an angle

we'll just put the rubbers in another place, so to have an angle,

we'll find out that the two drawings are not in their right place.

So, we must see how can we solve that issue regarding the angles.

I'll show you then what I practically though to help us in that case.

First, in a bigger cardboard we'll make a guide

with the help of the protractor and of a set square or a ruler.

I have marked points every 45 degrees,

that is 45, 90, 135, 180, 225 270 and 315 degrees,

and then I joined them in the center.

But you can choose different degrees. So, you can make wider or smaller angles.

Then I create a circle of bigge diameter of the one of the thaumatrope.

What follows is the known; we make circle on cardboard and on A4 paper,

we draw, and we mark the diameters.

So, I prepared my drawings, according to the first variable.

I named the diameters of the two drawings as I wanted. I.e. 1a-1b and 2a-2b.

Next step; I take one by one my drawings and I place them on my guide.

I make sure that the diameter of th disk coincides with the 0-180 degrees line.

So, the first drawing show the rocket.

I turn it by 45 degrees

and I make sure the center of the circle to coincide with the center of my guide.

and then I'll mark a new diameter.

WIth a light hand.

The second drawing - which I stabilize it with the compasses on it's place

so to be more stabil - I turn it also by 45 degrees or

- if we focus in the flames - I turn it so that to fall to 225 degrees.

Here, I'll once again mark the new diameter with a light hand.

I name the new diameters differently than the first ones.

I.e. A-B in both sides.

I take the cardboard, on which I've marked the diameter as well,

and I put on the first drawing, making sure that the new diameter coincides with the cardboard's.

I also make sure that the point "B" of the one side coincides with the point "B" of the other.

We coloured, we glued and there is just one step more. We've done that before.

We open holes with the punch on the new axis now, the A-B one.

Nice! We pass the rubbers and we loop them.

And our thaumatrope is ready to spin!

So, all three variables are ready!

WE hope that you liked our cunstructions and that you found it usefull and funny!

In the comments field we expect you to write about your thaumatrope!

We expect your "like" to the episode and to share it so more will watch it!

Shoulder Workout with Alex Oda - Duration: 5:05.

What's going on guys Alex Oda here and I am at Ironclad Fitness Studio in Roselle and

today we are covering delts.

Specifically this is my shoulder day, and for those of you who have been following me

for a while, some of you guys have asked, you know, when do I train delts, when do I

train my trap muscles and my trap muscles are actually overdeveloped so I don't have

a designated date for my traps.

I use shoulder days specifically for shoulders.

So today we're going to focus primarily on the front and the side and then if we have

time we're going to try to introduce a rear delt exercise to really bring everything together.

But all right guys we're going to jump into this with strength sets and then a little

bit of hypertrophy.

Alright guys so first exercise we're doing is five sets of five seated shoulder press.

Really, really good strength building exercise and depending on how I'm feeling with my wrists,

I'll either do a barbell press or I'll do a dumbbell pres.

So over time I'll notice if I do too make barbell exercises my wrists start to succumb

a little bit and they go sore.

So I'll alternate for a two month period where I'm doing barbell and a two month period

where I'm doing dumbbell.

You can focus and isolate a bit more with the dumbbell press but you get more compound

movements in with the barbell press.

So like I said guys, five sets of five.

Alright guys so the next exercise we're doing is four sets of seven and nine for lateral

raise.

So we're going to seated dumbbell lateral raises really focusing on that side delt development

and we're going to bring this up nice to shoulder height.

It's going to be really controlled, getting a lot of good reps I, and we're going for

a seven to nine rep range.

Right after this we're going to pump things up with a similar side delt exercise but we

are going to do a higher volume for nine to twelve.

Alright guys, rounding things off we're doing four sets of nine to twelve for lateral raises.

This machine is great because we're able to target a little more of a portion of our delts,

as compared the exercise right before this where we were targeting the whole delt head.

So we're going for a quicker rest time now, so anywhere from a minute and a half to a

minute forty five seconds really pumping things up and targeting those side delt muscles.

Alright guys so exercise number four we're focusing on upright rows with the EZ barbell,

so this guy right over here really really good for getting that targeted movement and

really focusing on the front of the delt.

So we're going for power sets here and after this the next exercise we're focusing on hitting

our rear delts to round everything out.

Alright guys so the final exercise we're doing is rear delt face pulls which is really going

to target the rear portion of our delt.

We're going for hypertrophy so four sets of nine to twelve to really bring everything

together and to really get that last bit of pump.

So, at this point you're going to feel pretty drained but you really want to focus on concentrating

and isolating the movement with your isometrics, so holding it and locking out, and then the

negative portion of the movement when you bring it down.

Alright guys that's it for delt day, shoulders focusing on the front delt, side delt, and

the rear delts, really bringing everything all together.

As I mentioned earlier at the video I actually don't train my traps directly, though if you

guys are really focusing on trap development, I highly recommend doing shrugs where you

have two dumbbells, and you're rolling forward, rolling backwards, and then going up and down.

I would do all three of those movements, count it as one set, and then repeat that three

more time.

So four sets of front roll, back roll, up and down, and make the rep range anywhere

from nine to twelve.

But that's it guys for shoulders and optionally traps, but I'll see you guys next time.

The 8 greatest reality TV falls from grace EVER

One of the golden rules of reality TV is that no decent character sits in the middle.

If viewers arent torn over whether they love or despise you then frankly, they dont care about you. In fact, you should probably keep a lookout for your P45 and get working on a back-up plan promoting stomach-flattening teas on Instagram. Grim.

But fans adoring you today doesnt mean youre by any means safe. We know – confusing, but we reality TV obsessives are a fickle bunch.

Even if we cant enough of you one minute, we can very swiftly hate you the next – soz!. Here, we take a look at the stars that flipped from one end of the scale to the other.

Its hard to believe but at one point in history (specific era: TOWIE season eight) Dan was the epitome of a good guy.

The chiselled gym addict could have even been the love of Lucy Mecklenburghs life had she not been so busy crying over the anti-Dan, panto villain Mario Falcone.

Fast-forward a few years though and Mario seems quite lovely, whereas Dan. Well, hes the man who was suspended from the show after allegedly being recorded threatening to stab the mother of his son, Teddy.

Although it should be said that Dan faced no police action over the recordings, and in 2015 Osbornes then-fiancée and now-wife Jacqueline Jossa said the star had been punished enough over the tapes.

An institution as British as moaning about the 807am to Paddington, Biggins went into the CBB house an icon. A few days later, he was thrown out the back door.

Producers took immediate action after the veteran actor was accused of making anti-semitic jokes that had left his Jewish housemate Katie Waissel in tears.

As if that werent bad enough, reports then surfaced claiming Biggins had blamed bisexuals for the widespread of AIDs. To think he was originally one of the favourites to win.

In early 2016, we all thought Jezza was a nice Irish bloke who saved Stephanie Davis from a bad relationship with evil model Sam Reece. Oh God, where do we start? Probably with an apology to Sam.

Jez on the other hand. Lets just say hes on a suspended sentence for assaulting Steph – the mother of his child.

It took Ken as much screen time as about two episodes of Corrie to demolish his legacy as fun, eccentric Reg Holdsworth and claim a new one as yet another racist on Celebrity Big Brother when he made reference to a nice big fat n***** in 2015.

He was swiftly told by co-star Alexander ONeal: When you get in the company of another black man, dont say n*****..

Producers then stepped in and booted Ken out of the house. He hasnt really been in the public eye much since – but thats probably just as well.

One minute youre a hot dancer, doing your thing on Strictly, the next minute youre the subject of A LOT of headlines featuring the words home wrecker.

We say one minute, but really we mean however long it took Kristina to form a romantic relationship with her married dance partner Ben Cohen.

Both Kristina and Ben have denied any cheating claims, with Kristina stating that she wasnt involved in the break-up of Bens marriage, and maintain they only got together after Ben left his wife.

And although, of course, it (literally) takes two to tango it was Kristinas reputation that was in tatters afterwards.

Has there been any greater self-saboteur? Any person at all who has taken their popularity and put it through the shredder in such a conclusive way?.

The nation chose him as our first ever winner of The X Factor back in 2004 with a record six million votes.

We loved him! But what happened next? Well, there isnt a sensitive subject that Steve hasnt been hideously offensive about, including – but far from limited to – the Manchester Arena bombing, the death of Simon Cowells mum and HIV jokes.

Jonny is the newest contender on the list but working hard to make up for lost time with some truly hideous behaviour. Thats the spirit, Jonny! Dont let the old-timers have it.

Given his playboy antics since Love Island finished, its hard to believe he was once coupled up with the elegant Camilla Thurlow, with viewers rooting for the couple to win the series.

Then he broke her heart by suddenly ending the romance and making his move on Tyla Carr right in front of a tearful Cammy.

Matters went from bad to worse when he left the villa and embraced his role as a terrible human with sexist jokes and the bad treatment of others on pretty much a daily basis. What did we ever see in him?.

In the early days of TOWIE, Kirk was the nice guy next door who tried – and failed – to take on serial heartbreaker Mark Wright. But that didnt quite work out.

After Marks departure, Kirk took-over as the go-to Essex boy for making girls cry and his appeal quickly wore off.

After Kirk left the show, his nasty break-up from reality star Cami Li made headlines (and more so when they were reunited two years later on MTVs Ex on the Beach).

Then there was the time he got caught masturbating on a leaked Skype video. Oh, and did we mention that he got another woman pregnant just three months after he and his fiancée welcomed their first daughter together?.

Urgh.

Top 10 Things Nobody Tells You About Lawrence Of Arabia - Duration: 8:27.

Top 10 Things Nobody Tells You About Lawrence Of Arabia

Although most people know him as the hero and leader portrayed in David Lean's 1962 epic film Lawrence of Arabia, Thomas Edward Lawrence was a far more complex and intriguing character than many people realize.

His individualism, eccentricity, and profound intellect brought him both trials and tribulations which most people are unaware of. Here are 10 surprising things about Lawrence of Arabia which you won't learn by watching the movie.

10. He Was Short

Lawrence was a small man, yet Peter O'Toole, who portrayed him in the 1962 film, stood at a full 188 centimeters (62″).

In reality, he was only 165 centimeters (55″) and therefore not the towering figure which he is often believed to be.

Even Robert Pattinson, having recently played Lawrence in Werner Herzog's film Queen of the Desert, is far too tall at 185 centimeters (61″) to give a good idea of the man's true height. Once again, this warps people's perspectives.

Thanks to his diminutive size, Lawrence was known as shortarse among his colleagues. Even so, Lawrence reportedly had astonishing endurance and was improbably tough.

Such strength has been attributed to a strong mental determination to overcome his unimpressive stature, spurred on by the fact that his brothers were much taller than he was.

9. He Might Have Been Gay

Lawrence's sexuality is a sensitive matter that remains the subject of constant speculation. Some claim that his marriage proposal to Janet Laurie—an old family friend—is proof that he was heterosexual.

Supposedly, he also had a mistress to whom he sent regular, secretive payments. Others argue that Lawrence was probably gay, especially given his close relationship with Dahoum, an Arab water boy.

Dahoum is often considered to be Lawrences personal motive for leading the desert revolt which Lawrence mentioned in his book Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

Furthermore, his book was dedicated to S.A. These are the initials of Dahoum's real name, Selim Ahmed, thus adding fuel to the speculation.

It is clear from such disagreement that nobody actually knows what Lawrence's sexuality was. But it is an irrelevant factor when considering the achievements and flaws of this war hero.

8. He Built His Own House In His Family's Garden

A perfect example of what made Lawrence an unusual person is the bungalow he built for himself in his familys garden. As a student, he was an introvert who spent little time with his fellow pupils.

Growing up with four brothers and both parents in a relatively small Victorian house wasnt easy, either.

As a result, Lawrence and his father built a small, single-story house for him in the garden, where he could work in peace, away from his brothers and other distractions.

During his time in this bungalow, he claimed to have pushed himself to the limits, once going 45 hours without food or sleep.

Both his family home and the house in the garden are still standing, proof that Lawrence did not go about his life the way most people do.

7. He Introduced Explosives To The Middle East

In 2016, we are all too familiar with the use of IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and suicide bombers in the Middle East, both of which are used by terrorists.

Lawrence may have played a large role in giving such tactics to the terrorists.

With a man named Herbert Garland, Lawrence made widespread use of explosives to disrupt the Turkish railway lines in Arabia. This strategy had devastating effects and contributed massively to the success of the revolt.

His ingenious ideas were used by Vietnamese generals during the war with America.

Since then, they have been copied by revolutionary groups and terrorists across the world. Perhaps that explains why the writings of Lawrence are on the recommended reading list of US forces engaged in combat in the Middle East.

6. He Walked Across Syria Alone

As a young man, Lawrence decided to walk the length of Syria alone—and he promptly did.

Only 21 years old, he traveled over 1,600 kilometers (1,000 mi) on foot across the desert and through many of the world's oldest cities, regardless of the dangers he faced.

His reason for the trip was related to his university degree in history, so he spent his time photographing and studying crusader castles.

However, Lawrence did much more than look at castles. He learned about the political and geographic conditions of the region and the customs of the local people.

In addition, he learned to speak Arabic. The things he discovered in Syria would be invaluable to his campaign to aid the Arab revolt.

And the sheer audacity it took to walk across a dangerous, foreign country on foot speaks volumes about Lawrence as a man.

5. He Was Born Out Of Wedlock

Being born to unmarried parents in the Victorian era was scandalous. But that is the story of Lawrence.

His father, Sir Thomas Chapman, left a wife and four daughters to be with the family's governess, Sarah Junner. They soon adopted the name, Lawrence.

Once again, this put them in conflict with a deeply patriarchal Victorian society, which expected children to have the surname of their father.

Since Chapman never divorced his first wife, the Lawrence family moved around constantly to escape detection. As a result, all five sons were born in different countries. T.E. Lawrence was born in Wales.

Since he grew up in England, his mother was Scottish, and his father was part Irish, T.E. Lawrence ended up as something of a combination of all the different countries that make up the United Kingdom.

4. He May Have Fabricated His Own Torture

In Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence writes of being captured, tortured, and sexually assaulted by Turkish soldiers. These events, which reportedly took place in Deraa, were reproduced in David Lean's film.

However, some people contend that this was entirely made up by Lawrence for a variety of reasons, both political and personal.

Forensic analysis of the journal that Lawrence kept during the war suggests that he was not where he claimed to be when the torture took place.

However, it is known that torture, both orthodox and sexual, was a common practice in the Ottoman Empire, especially against captured officers like Lawrence. When Seven Pillars of Wisdom was published, topics such as sexual assault were taboo.

Thus, his decision to include the passage would not have been taken lightly. As with much of Lawrence's life, the truth is unclear but remains hotly contested.

3. He Was Multilingual

Lawrence was a polyglot. Having supposedly learned to read at age four, he started to learn Latin at six, displaying early signs of linguistic proficiency. Before age 30, he was fluent in French, German, Greek, Arabic, Turkish, Syriac, English, and Latin.

He translated Homer's The Odyssey from ancient Greek to English—perhaps reflecting his own epic journeys—and this was subsequently published.

Furthermore, he was part of the Arab delegation to the Treaty of Versailles after World War I, acting as a translator between the various heads of state.

This role allowed him to speak personally with many of the world's most powerful people, such as Woodrow Wilson, Georges Clemenceau, and David Lloyd George.

2. He Was A Photography Pioneer

Few people are aware that Lawrence was an avid photographer, perhaps surprising for a man who was so often on the other side of the lens.

Inspired by his father, Lawrence took photographs throughout his life—from class pictures at school to detailed images of archaeological finds in the Middle East.

Some of his photographs were very important because he was involved in a project to photograph and map large parts of uncharted Palestine. This material would become hugely important during World War I.

Even after retreating from the public eye and joining the Royal Air Force, Lawrence became part of a recently founded School of Photography, where he excelled and developed new techniques for photographing planes.

1. He Hated Fame

Lawrence hated his fame and could not stand the media attention he received. As one of the heroes of World War I, his achievements were widely praised. He became arguably the world's first media celebrity, with the press constantly reporting on him.

Yet he wanted anonymity, even enlisting in the Royal Air Force under a fake name to get away from his fame. But within months, the press had discovered his identity and published it.

Despite having written Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence didnt have it published in his lifetime because he was desperate to avoid the attention it might bring him.

The reason for this aversion to popularity is believed to be a deep sense of guilt about his achievements. This was evident in his letters because he thought the Arab revolt was a failure.

After all, the Imperial powers simply carved up the Middle East for themselves after World War I. So he considered himself to be a failure, despite public opinion to the contrary.
