Welcome to the fifth module of How to MOOC Your Human Services.
When I hold in-person workshops and consultations with non-profit organizations, the most frequently
asked question is always "How much would a MOOC cost us?"
I definitely understand the urgency of finding out the cost, after all, even in a non-profit
environment, money still matters a lot - so this module focuses on the money.
According to research from Columbia University, an Academic MOOC would cost $152,000 on the
low-end, $244,000 on the high-end to make.
This number may not be a deterrent for a heftily endowed, illustrious university, but for cash-strapped
non-profit organisations, it's astronomical.
You can certainly make a Social MOOC with much less money.
However, it's impossible for me to know how much without knowing the scope, audience,
and expected outcomes of your MOOC.
I also have to suspend the cost and budget question until you fully understand
what a Social MOOC actually is and
what making a MOOC actually entails.
Here are the things that would potentially cost us:
In the purchased services category we may have to pay for:
Project Manager, Course Instructors, Curriculum Designer, Instructional Designer, Subject
Matter Experts, Actors, Editor, Videographer, Video Editor, Animator, Computer Programmer,
Transcriber, Course Monitor, Mentors, Evaluator, and so on.
In the materials and supplies category we may have to pay for:
Equipment, equipment rental, studio rental, software subscription, copyrighted materials,
incentives, such as food and prizes, for needs assessment or focus groups, transportation,
platform customization and other miscellaneous fees.
In the promotion category we may need to consider: advertisement, trailer video, copy editing, etc.
Finally, hardly any project or initiative could survive without an organizational infrastructure.
So it is also necessary to consider the overhead and administrative support costs.
I put all the possible costs here to avoid any surprises down the road, but you should
not get discouraged by the extensive list of people and materials that a MOOC may demand.
The cost disparities in MOOC production and delivery can be wildly huge.
While Academic MOOCs cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, some one-person show MOOCs may
only cost the person's time.
CultureLink's first MOOC relied largely on in-kind resources and only cost the organization
about 10,000 Canadian dollars in cash.
This is less than the average amount that a university would pay for a Teaching Assistant
to help prepare PowerPoint slides for an Academic MOOC.
A MOOC requires a lot of labour.
The more people that get involved in a project, the more expensive the project can get and
the more coordination effort will be required.
But if you have a team of versatile colleagues who each has skills and experiences to take
more than a couple of roles listed above, then you'll drastically reduce
the cost of a MOOC.
The composition of your MOOC determines how much your MOOC will cost.
Videos generally cost a lot more than text contents, and games and animations are even
more expensive to make.
Production quality is another very important cost factor.
Using professional video producers will add value to the overall impact of your course
thanks to the professional look of the video, but this will come at a big cost.
DIY videos may not look as polished, but they are authentic and, most of all, cost-saving.
So the answer to your question is that the MOOC will cost how much you can afford.
It's like whether you wear a $15 winter jacket bought from a thrift store,
or a $1500 "Canada Goose", you probably would weather the weather all the same, but you may look
different and other people may see you differently.
