Seamless Hand-Drawn Striped Patterns in Illustrator - Duration: 10:06.

Hello! I'm Cristina from Elan Creative Co and in this tutorial I'm going to

show you how to turn hand-drawn lines into seamless striped patterns. I drew

these lines using brush markers, then I scanned them. I will also have to vectorize

them before I can use them. This tutorial works for any type of lines so you can

also draw them using the Illustrator brush tools or you can use any other

kind of lines. So let's vectorize them! Find the image trace on the toolbar.

Click the arrow next to it and then select black and white logo.

This will vectorize your lines. Now click on the image trace menu. You can click on

this icon or go to Window > Image Trace, click on Advanced and then click on

Ignore White. This will remove the white background. Now if you want, you can play

with the settings. I will probably increase the number of paths. I think

this looks better. If you want to learn more about vectorizing your artwork, I am

going to link to a tutorial in the video description. Now close the image trace

menu and click on Expand. Now you have vector lines. I want to make sure that

the lines are straight. They look pretty straight but they might not be so I'm

going to go to View > Rulers > Show Rulers. Then I'm going to click on the top ruler

and drag a guide. This will help me straighten the lines. Then I'm going to

right-click on the lines and Ungroup them. So let's move them up here and then

I am going to take each line and

straighten it a bit. Now I'm going to move this over here. I'm going to do the

same for all the lines.

When you are done, go to View > Guides > Hide Guides. This will remove the guide. I'm

also going to use the artboard as a guide to create a pattern. Now my lines

are longer than the artboard but I want the upper and lower lines to still be

inside the artboard. So I'm going to move each one. I don't really like how

this line looks so I'm going to delete this. When you are happy with the way

your pattern looks, select all the lines and press Ctrl + G to group them. Another

thing I like to do is to crop everything that's outside the artboard. So I'm going

to use the Rectangle tool to create a rectangle that's the same size as the

artboard. Mine is 6 by 6 inches and I'm going to align it to the artboard. I'm

going to select everything and then I'm going to go to the Pathfinder menu. So go

to Window > Pathfinder and click on crop. Next we are going to use the Pattern

making tool to create our pattern. Go to Object > Pattern > Make to open the Pattern

menu. Your new pattern will appear in the Swatches panel. Let's maybe, let's change

the color. I'm going to select all the lines and let's pick another color. What

you can see here with the darker color is the main pattern, and as you can see,

the intersections don't look very good so your pattern is not seamless. The

Pattern tool only works in Illustrator cs5 and newer. If you are using older

versions of Illustrator you will have to use the manual method, but the next step is

the same no matter what method you use. So we are going to edit this place where the

lines intersect and we are going to make them seamless.

So zoom in to see them better. So you'll only have to edit one side of the

pattern. Once you do this, the other side will also be seamless. You can use many

tools for this, like the pencil tool or the brush tool, but I feel that it's

easier to use the Direct Selection tool and change each anchor point. So click on

the line to select it, then click on the anchor point you want to change, and then

just drag it until it intersects with the other line. Now do the same for the

other anchor points. You might also have to move a few anchor points along the

line to make it look seamless. Let's zoom out and see how it looks. If you look

over here, it actually looks really good and it still has that hand-drawn look. So

let's do the same thing for the next line. So I'm going to click on it and

move it over here, and I'm going to do the same for the bottom one. And let's

also move these anchor points. If you want you can also remove some of the

anchor points using the Delete Anchor Point tool.

The shortcut is - So just click on it to delete it. I think it looks good so I'm

going to do the same for all the other lines.

If you want to make the lines straight, you can use the Smooth tool, it's under

the Sharper tool. So make sure you select the line and then click on the Smooth

tool and just use it on the line. Also, when you use the Smooth tool make sure

you don't use it over here because it might make this a bit rounder and it

won't look good. The pattern is now seamless. If you want, you can make some

of this lines straighter, but I actually like the hand-drawn feel so I am not

going to edit them. To save your pattern click Done. It will now appear in the

Swatches panel. So I'm going to delete this and let's create a seamless pattern

tile. To do that double click on your pattern and then look at the width and

height of your pattern. Then close this, and using the rectangle tool, create a

rectangle that's the same size as your pattern. Mine is 6 by 6 inches just like my

artboard. Then click OK. So let's align it to the artboard. If you want to test it

or create a larger seamless pattern, you can use the Move tool. So click on your

pattern, then go to Object > Transform > Move, and for the horizontal you will have to

enter the width of your pattern, and for the vertical you will have to enter 0.

Then click on Copy. Now I'm going to move this again to the left side, so I'm going

to press on Ctrl + Shift + M to open the move tool, and for the horizontal I'm just

going to enter - in front to move it to the left side, and then click on Copy.

Let's select the 3 of them and create a copy. So open the Move tool again by

clicking on Ctrl + Shift + M, for the horizontal I'm going to enter 0 and for

the vertical I'm going to enter the height of my pattern. Let's make it

6. Then click on Copy. So as you can see, this pattern is seamless and it looks

great. If you want to make changes to it, just go back to the Pattern options, and

you can select each line, and let's change the color. You can make it pink or

let's make it this mustard. If you want to add a background to the pattern,

select the color you want to use and then with the Rectangle tool create a

rectangle that's the same size as the pattern tile. Then go to Arrange and send

it to the back. To save a copy of your pattern click on Save a Copy. You can

rename the pattern if you want and click OK, then click on Cancel to exit the

pattern options. You can see the new pattern is here in the swatches panel so

let's test it. And it looks great! If you see this line, it's not because the

pattern is not seamless, it has to do with your screen. You can use the pattern

options to create all sorts of patterns. So let's go in again and let's create a

vertical pattern. So I'm going to select everything and lets you group it to make

this easier, and then right click on it. Go to Transform and Rotate and enter the

angle 90 degrees to make a vertical pattern. Then click OK.

Let's also recolor this one and then click on Save a Copy. Then click on

Cancel to exit the pattern options. So let's select everything again and

test our vertical pattern. This also looks great! Hope you've enjoyed this

tutorial! If you want to see more pattern design tutorials, please like this video

Watercolor Brush Marker Demo and Review || Marabu Creabox Watercolor Pen from Lidl - Duration: 5:40.

Hi everyone!

Today I'll talk about this watercolor pen set I got from Lidl and show you how they

work by swatching them and making a quick painting.

I haven't tried watercolor markers by any other brand before, so I can't say whether

these are better or worse than some other brand.

So, this is a Creabox Marabu set of 8 watercolor pens and they work kind of like watercolor

pencils or watersoluble chalk pastels.

They're water-based markers so you can draw with them and paint over with a wet brush

to get a watercolor effect.

They are dual tip pens meaning that there's a fine tip and a flexible brush tip in each

pen.

I liked the brush tip, because I don't have any brush tip markers and you can use them

to draw a thin line by pressing it softly on the paper and a thicker line by pressing

it harder and you can even color in some larger areas.

The instructions say to draw on watercolor paper.

I did also try them on normal printer paper and it didn't work at all.

The marker would not spread out at all when I applied water with a brush afterwards.

You need to first draw on the paper with the pen and then paint over it with a wet brush

to make the color dissolve and spread out.

So, don't dip the pen in water, you'll just waste pigment that way.

I think some of the colors activate better with water than others.

The pink and light blue are so light that they get completely washed out when you add

water.

Others like the black one will immediately spread out even if you touch it with a wet

brush a tiniest bit.

You can also mix the colors together.

I tried swatching some of them side by side and then blending them together into a gradient

with water and I think it works well.

You can also use them just as markers to add accent colors on your art.

Many of them are quite pigmented so they'll look pretty bold on a watercolor painting,

if you don't water them down.

You could also swatch them on another paper and just get a bit of the color on a wet brush

and paint with that instead to get lighter colors, if you want.

The pigment doesn't reactivate completely though so with some of the colors you can

still see the original lines you drew even after watering it down.

I don't know if that's a common thing with watercolor pens.

But you can also use it to your advantage.

I decided to test the watercolor pens out by painting a quick mermaid partly because

it's May and MerMay and partly because I wanted to see how the scales of the mermaid tail

would turn out.

I drew the scales in green and blue and then added water to activate and blend them together.

And since the marker doesn't completely dissolve, you continue to see hints of the scale texture

underneath.

I had some trouble with the face especially, because the parts I already painted over would

reactivate so easily.

So, these pens are kind of tricky for small details if you need to paint something else

right next to them.

In a previous painting I also tried painting some white highlights over them with acrylic

paint and they reactivated then too.

I didn't mind it for that painting, but it's a good thing to keep in mind so you don't

accidentally ruin your painting.

If you're interested in getting these watercolor pens, I got them from Lidl in March, but they'll

probably bring them back every once in a while.

The stock changes nearly every week in Lild, so it's best to check their weekly offers

on their website.

I'll also put a link below, if I can find this set online.

Before we do the tape peeling, I want to remind you of a couple of things.

First of all, the next YouTube Artists Collective is on June 8.

And the theme is Masquerade Ball and you can participate if you want to make art on that

theme and then post it on social media and or YouTube on that day.

And the other thing is that there is a new discord server for art youtubers called TheArtRoom

started by HulloAlice and JellieBee.

I'll put the link below and you can join if you have a YouTube channel of any size and

make art or craft videos.

Ok, thank you so much for watching and see you next week!

I post a new video every week on Friday and sometimes an extra one on Tuesday.

Bye!
