hey it's patti scharf CPA and co-founder of catching clouds the leader in
e-commerce accounting today I want to give you five tips for building your
dream business so many entrepreneurs I know they start out basically they start
their business because they kind of hate whatever it is that they're doing maybe
they're working for somebody else and they want to be the master of their own
destiny or something like that and there's not a lot of clarity about what
they need to do to create their dreams so let's get started with tip number one
that is start with the end in mind here's the thing if you don't know where
you want to go or where you want to end up how are you gonna get there you know
you're just gonna be floundering around and not knowing what's going on so one
of the main reasons Scott and I started our business is because we wanted to
work from any beach in the world and we wanted our clients to be able to work
from any beach in the world and because that was one of our main drives and
motivations it's not an accident when this winter we're going to New
Zealand and Australian we're going to be working there for five months because
we've built the kind of business that is portable you know what I mean so so
number one start with the end in mind know who your customers are gonna be
what kind of employees are gonna fit with you make sure you have a culture
that that embraces who you are and where you want to go and where you want to be
tip number two get help outsource the things that you don't like
the very the very first hire which wasn't actually a business hire but a
personal hire was somebody to come clean our house like once a month because we
were just too busy we weren't getting it done so you know find out where it is
you need help and then go get the help it's okay and honestly if you're gonna
build the kind of business if you're if you're building more than your job if
you're just building a job and you just want clients and you just want to work
day to day for different people that's totally cool and if that's your dream
awesome if you want to build a business where it can kind of run even if you're
not there you need a whole different kind of setup
and you need to bring in the help on things that you don't like doing that
you don't want to do that you don't have time to do so so make sure that you get
help when you need it tip number three trust but verify now
don't just get help and then go whoo I don't care about that anymore and it is
not my problem here's the thing it is your business it is always your business
you cannot abdicate responsibility to somebody else it's it's up to you to
make sure that your business is staying on track so if you're for example
outsourcing your accounting you need to understand how to read your financials
you need to understand the methodologies and be involved in that process but it
doesn't mean that you need to spend 20 hours a week keeping your own books tip
number four is adapt now just because you have your your far-reaching goal and
maybe you've laid out a plan that doesn't mean that your plan can't change
along the way don't change your goal or change your
goal if your your dreams change but but generally you keep your goal the same
and you how you get there is going to change the entrepreneurs journey is full
of setbacks it's full of pitfalls it's kind of unavoidable and never actually
goes in a straight line so just keep that in mind be kind to yourself as
you're going through that journey and just adapt as you go tip number five is
to keep learning find somebody else who has already been through what you're
going through find a mentor or an advisor who knows the struggles that
you're going through and can help you get past them align yourself with maybe
a group of other small businesses that are going on the same journey that
you're going on and just share knowledge amongst yourselves it'll get you there
