- [Narrator] Puppies, they're the furry friends

we take for granted.

But, how does having one affect us?

(upbeat music)

- My name is Meg Olmert and I'm the author of

"Made For Each Other: the biology of the human-animal bond."

Our journey with dogs began about 45,000 years ago

according to the latest archeological evidence.

It preceded many hundreds of thousands of years

with a more casual, and perhaps distant, pragmatic

relationship with wolves as well.

But about 45,000 years ago we start to see the bones change

and indications that A, dogs are certainly living with us.

And that living with us appears to have had certain

effects on their biology and their physiology.

That is what enabled them to

become our best friends.

- [Narrator] How does this relationship work?

- There is a feedback system that both neurochemically

and psychologically and behaviorally

that sets up between you and your pet.

And how good you are to your pet

is often exactly reflected back.

Although, what I would say

is they tend to be wildly generous.

More generous than we are.

So, that is why, you know, they'll be wagging their tail,

you know, thrilled to see you when you come home

or if it's a cat it's purring.

And you may be very distracted but they aren't.

You are the greatest thing they ever saw

if you've developed this relationship.

If you've earned it.

You have a different relationship with your own pet

versus your, even your neighbor's pet, because it's,

that's your closer family.

It's a different kind of bond and when they do FMRI studies

just like a mother will have certain brain regions

light up very strongly in the dopamine

and oxytocin rich areas when they look at a picture

of their baby versus just another infant.

When you look at a picture of your dog versus another dog,

you see the same thing.

If you love dogs you're gonna get this reward

to a degree whether you are looking at your dog or not.

Do therapy dogs work?

Well they certainly can.

Dogs can do amazing things.

With our program Warrior Canine Connection

we work with service members

and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

We have the patients who say, "This dog

is better than any drug I ever took.

I didn't sleep for five years until this dog

slept next to me."

- [Narrator] What happens to your body

when you're with your dog?

- [Meg] Your heart rate comes down,

your blood pressure comes down,

your heart rate variability which is the ability

of the heart to duck and dive

and respond to stress improves.

You release oxytocin, the opioids,

adrenaline, and serotonin.

So, all of these great reward chemicals

and anti-stress chemicals can be released

in both you and the pet.

- [Narrator] What is oxytocin?

- Oxytocin is a very ancient chemical.

It's in all social mammals.

There's variations on it that you find in birds

and in turtles, and in worms.

And it most effectively is known for releasing breast milk

and creating labor contractions.

That's what it was first known for.

So in a sense, it is the quintessential mammalian hormone

since live birth and production of breast milk identifies us

as mammals and mammary glands, et cetera.

About 25 years ago they discovered that besides the oxytocin

receptors and cells in the body that are producing oxytocin

in the breast and the uterus, lo and behold,

it's produced throughout the brain and in all the areas

that control behavior and emotion.

So what was it doing there?

And what they discovered was that it was talking to other

classic brain neurotransmitters such as serotonin,

and dopamine and adrenaline, and the opioid system.

And it was setting up, by doing that, this perfect

mental physiologic state of calm.

It is the most powerful drive and it creates the bond

that lasts a lifetime.

That's how strong it is.

(happy music)

8 Pancreatic Cancer Signs You Might Be Ignoring. - Duration: 5:17.

8 Pancreatic Cancer Signs You Might Be Ignoring.

Your skin looks yellow.

"Jaundice is one of the clearest symptoms of pancreatic cancer," says Christopher DiMaio,

MD, a gastroenterologist at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

"Often, patients feel fine until one day a friend notices their eyes look yellow, then

they go to the doctor and find they have advanced pancreatic cancer."

Cancers that start near the head of the pancreas can block the bile duct, preventing bile from

reaching the intestines, where it helps break down fats and eventually leaves the body in

the stool.

This bile builds up and causes jaundice, which is yellowing of the skin or eyes.

It can also cause your skin to itch, according to the American Cancer Society.

These are other cancer symptoms women should never ignore and cancer signs men should never

ignore.

You experience abdominal or back pain.

Place the tip of your finger on the top of your abdomen, just below the breastbone.

Then imagine your finger pointing straight back through your body to the spine.

That's a common location that pancreatic cancer patients report feeling pain, says Dr. DiMaio.

"The pain is hard to describe, but a dull, internal pain in this area, or radiating around

the sides of your abdomen to the back, is a tip-off and you should get it checked out,"

he says.

Cancers that start in the body or tail of the pancreas can press on nearby organs, causing

pain.

If the cancer spreads to the nerves surrounding the pancreas, this can cause back pain.

Here are some more reasons your back might be hurting.

You have dark urine or greasy stools.

If your urine starts to look dark (brown or rust colored), this may signal a problem.

As bilirubin, a substance made by the liver that partly makes up bile, builds up in the

blood, urine darkens.

Here's what other urine changes can say about your health.

Clay-colored or greasy stools can also be symptoms of pancreatic cancer, as they can

be caused by cancer blocking the bile duct, says Dr. DiMaio.

You experience nausea or vomiting.

Cancer pressing on the far end of the stomach can cause a partial blockage, making it hard

for food to get through.

According to the American Cancer Society, this can cause nausea, vomiting, and pain

that tends to be worse after eating.

All of these things, therefore, could be symptoms of pancreatic cancer.

Here are the explanations behind 7 other common stomach pains.

You develop pancreatitis.

"Unexplained or chronic pancreatitis can be caused by a small tumor on the pancreas,"

says Dr. DiMaio.

Though pancreatitis is more commonly caused by gallstones, new medications, or alcohol

abuse, if you develop the condition and don't have any of those risk factors, it could be

something more serious, he says.

Don't miss these other signs of cancer in men that go ignored.

You have poor oral hygiene.

If your mouth is a mess of bad breath, inflamed gums, or loose teeth, it could be more than

bad hygiene.

"Pancreatic cancer patients are known to be susceptible to gum disease, cavities, and

poor oral health in general," according to researchers from NYU Langone Medical Center,

who conducted a study examining mouth bacteria of pancreatic cancer patients versus people

without.

They found that the presence of the same bacteria that has been tied to dental diseases like

periodontitis (inflammation of the gums) put participants at a 59 percent greater risk

of developing pancreatic cancer than those whose mouths didn't contain the bacteria.

Here's what else your teeth and mouth can reveal about your health.

You've recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

A diabetes diagnosis doesn't mean you'll get pancreatic cancer, but it is associated with

an increased risk.

One Mayo Clinic study found that 40 percent of pancreatic patients were diagnosed with

diabetes in the months before their cancer diagnosis.

The pancreas is responsible for creating insulin, so the early stages of the tumor may affect

the pancreas's ability to produce insulin, causing diabetes, says Dr. DiMaio.

Here's what else you should do right after a diabetes diagnosis.

You have unexplained weight loss.

If you suddenly have little to no appetite, or if you're losing weight without changing

your diet or exercise regimen, see your doctor; these are some of the common symptoms of pancreatic

cancer, says Dr. DiMaio.

Unexplained weight loss—or gain—is one thing that doctors themselves say you should

never ignore.

Can You Pronounce The Most Common Vietnamese Last Name? - Duration: 2:21.

- What up internet?

My name is Nancy and today I'm gonna be walking

around the BuzzFeed office trying to see if my coworkers

know how to say my last name.

How long have we been friends?

- Almost a year?

- A little over a year.

- For a good half a year.

- Would you say that we're good friends?

- Yeah.

- Yeah, we're good friends, we hang.

- I've been to your house.

- Do you know how to pronounce my last name?

(record scratch)

- Oh, no no no no no, I can't do it.

- Noy-wen.

- Ehhh...

No.

- I don't want to try 'cause I feel like

I'm gonna mess it up.

- It's Noo-yin?

I had a friend in high school named Julian Noo-yin.

- It's not.

- Waynge?

- No.

- It's Noo-wen?

- It's still wrong.

- I feel like I just blew your mind.

- I've been saying Noy-wen since middle school.

- N'wen.

- Alright I'll take that.

- Wen?

Hmmm?

- It's actually Wheng.

- Wang. Wang?

Wheng.

- Oh, I don't want to try again.

- Wheng.

- Wang.

Everybody always says Wang.

It's Wheng.

- What? Can you come closer and say that again?

- Wheng.

- Wayne?

- You're just saying Wayne now.

- I wanna crawl into your mouth and figure out

where you're holding the word.

- Wheng.

- Whang?

- That's actually good.

- So the thing about the Vietnamese language,

is that it's a monosyllabic language,

so every single word is only one syllable.

So Nguyen is one word, so Noy-wen is not correct.

A lot of the sounds that goes into my last name,

doesn't really exist in the English language.

- Nancy told me how to pronounce her last name last year,

and my dentist has the same last name,

so I was able to call her doctor Wheng,

and I could tell it meant a lot to her

that I said her last name correctly.

Thank you, Nancy.

- I've heard my last name butchered in so many different

ways that nothing really phases me anymore.

We're all learning today.

Not really me, but definitely a lot of other people are.

("Blue Danube")

- I'm really sorry, Nancy.

(laughing)

- It's okay, we're still good friends.

You want a hug?

- [friend] Yes.
