Hello and welcome to Fluffy Unicorn's Crochet Corner!
Today, I show you how to crochet arms and legs for your dragon amigurumi.
Just in case you wonder about all those nature sound in the background - no, this is no fake it really has become summer over here!
But of course no real crochet addict will stop working just because of a little heat, so we start:
Fasten your yarn end between rounds 5 and 6 of the body, approximately meeting the line of the side of the tail
Start with 5 single crochets which you crochet directly to the body as follows
After you fastened your yarn end with a chain stitch
you start working around the single crochets of the body.
This means you insert your hook in front of one stitch and bring it out right behind that stitch
than you finish your single crochet as you are used to.
Once again in close up and a bit more slowly: Bring your hook around the single crochet of the body,
pull yarn through and pull it through once again to finish your single crochet
After you have done your 5 single crochets like that in this direction
(as you see this is sometimes a bit tricky, especially when doing it in front of cameras ;) )
ok, done with the 5 stitches in this direction,
turn your work by 180 degrees
and crochet another 5 single crochets back
These are worked exactly around the same stitches as the first 5 single crochets
So at the end you should have a really flat oval shape
Like this
What I do next is pulling this yarn end into the body, so it can no longer desturb us.
You can do this now or sew it up later, as you wish
In the next round the only tricky thing is to find the first real stitch and not work into the chain stitch you fastened your yarn with
When you have found it, you go on doing a simple round of 10 single crochets.
Of course this means you have to do 5 single crochets on the downside and another 5 on the upper side
After this round you do another 5 rounds with 10 single crochets each.
In the next round, which is round number 8, you do 3 increases at the top and apart from that single crochets around
To show you the new pattern only, I already have done the first single crochets and start at the end of the downside.
So to provide you with a stitch count, I do 6 single crochets before the increases
Then I do 3 increases.
So stitches numbers 7, 8 and 9 will be increased
And then I finish this round with one single crochet and end up with 13 stitches in total
In the next round we do one popcorn stitch in every first stitch of the three increases
Apart from that we do single crochets around, so once again we start with 6 single crochets
So into the seventh stitch comes the first popcorn stitch
The pattern of the popcorn stitch is: 3 half double crochets,
one
second half double crochet into the same stitch,
and a third one also into that stitch
Then enlargen your loop
Exert hook and go back three stitches
insert hook into the first half double crochet
get loop back onto it
and pull it through that first half double crochet
Then follows one single crochet
And we proceed to the second popcorn stitch, which I show you a bit faster, here
Start with 3 half double crochet into one stitch
Exert hook and put it into the first half double crochet of this popcorn stitch
pull loop through that stitch
and finished is you second popcorn stitch
Then follows one single crochet
And another popcorn stitch
followed by a single crochet into the next stitch
And another single crochet to end this round
Stuff the arm of your dragon a little
In the next round you do 5 invisible decreases. This is how you do them:
Insert hook into the two front loops of the decreasing stitches,
pull yarn through those two front loops, so you get two loops on your hook,
and then pull yarn through those two loops
Repeat this invisible decrease another four times
Just in case you wonder why we are doing this only five times (although we should have 13 stitches in our round by now)
Yes, of course you are right, but
the popcorn stitches "swallow" one stitch, which now is hiding inside it
Of course you could search and find them,
but one can also go the easy way and just drop them as we do here
So we do only work with the stitches lying visibly on the top
So this is how we end up with 5 decreases in this round
Next you sew up the end, for which I show you my favorite technique:
Pull yarn through the front loops of all but one stitch
So in this case this means the first four stitches,
then pull them together tightly
This should cover up the small whole in the middle
Next, I tie the yarn end to the front loop of the last stitch
and hide the tail somewhere inside the amigurumi
and cut it off
The leg is worked quite similarly.
We go down from the outside of the arm counting 9 rounds down
Here we fasten our yarn end with one chain stitch
And then we do 3 single crochet to the left.
We crochet them directly to the body as we did when starting the arm
After these three single crochets,
we turn our work by 90 degrees
So this is different from the arm, where we turned by 180 degrees
and now we do three single crochets towards the top
So if you have done the rest of the dragon with me, too and not only use this arms-and-legs-pattern for another amigurumi, you already know this technique from doing the neck.
When you have done your three single crochets up,
you turn your work by 90 degrees again
and do another three single crochets towards the back
Turn once again by 90 degrees
and do another three single crochets back to where you started this round
Be careful to meet the first single crochet, not the chain stitch you fastened your yarn end with
So in the end you should have a square or circle like this formed by 12 single crochets in total
Do one simple round with 12 single crochets starting into the first single crochet of the previous round (not into the chain stitch!)
After this round you do another four rounds with 12 single crochets each.
In the next round, which is round 6, you do 4 increases on the upper side of the leg
So this is similar to the pattern of the arm, but instead of 3 we do 4 increases.
So we start with 6 single crochets,
Well, lets say five or six, you can vary this a bit according to the position you like best
Just keep in mind that the four increases should be somewhat in the middle of the upper side of the leg
So I do six single crochets,
then I do four increases
and another two single crochets to finish this round.
So in total you should end up with 14 stitches
Similar to the arm you do one popcorn stitch into each first stitch of your increases in the next round.
So again you start with six - five or six - single crochets,
The popcorn stitches here are made a bit different then those of the arm.
Instead of doing 3 half double crochets, you work them with 4 half double crochets.
Ok, so this is where I reach my first increase of the previous round
And into the seventh stitch I do the first popcorn stitch with 4 half double crochets
After I did four half double crochets, I exert hook, count four stitches back,
and pull my loop through that stitch.
Next we do one single crochet,
and then follows the next popcorn stitch with 4 half double crochets
When you have done your four half double crochets you count four stitches back,
and pull your loop through the first half double crochet of this popcorn stitch
Next do one single crochet.
Repeat another two times [popcorn stitch, single crochet] and do another 2 single crochets to complete this round
Stuff the leg
In the next round do 6 decreases
Once again I use the invisible decrease technique, but of course you may also use any other decrease technique you like
After this round you cut and sew up the yarn end
The second arm and the second leg are done in the same way
When you have done all four arms and legs, you are almost through with doing this dragon.
In the next part of this series, which is already the last one, I show you how to do the "comb" of the dragon.
Thank you for watching!
I am looking forward to your comments, likes and shares.
Hope to see you again for the last part of this series!
