What Influences Body Image? (It's Not Just You) - Duration: 7:03.

Samantha Skelly: In this video I'm going to talk to you about what influences body image,

and something important to remember, it's probably not you.

What's up, Phoenix?

My name is Samantha Skelly, and I am the founder of Hungry for Happiness, and if you truly

want to end the battle with food and your body, you've come to the right place, so be

sure to subscribe to the channel, hit the bell.

I release these videos every single Thursday to give you high value content to truly end

the battle between food and your body.

[00:00:30] Okay, so let's talk about the three big things that truly influence the way that

you feel about your body.

Number one, conditioning society.

Think about when you were growing up, how many conditions you had around how you felt

about yourself.

[00:01:00] I want to relate it back to the whole complex of, "You're the fat girl, you're

the one with big bones."

If someone says something to you on the school ground when you're really young, you're going

to metabolize that, and you're going to take that in as truth, and your whole life you're

going to be creating evidence as to why that's true.

It's a story, it's an identity that's not yours.

It was conditioned on you from either your parents, someone at school, society, whatever

it is, and so what is really important to remember is asking yourself, "What do I believe

to be true about myself?

What do I believe to be true about myself?"

[00:01:30] If you are unclear about that, ask yourself, "What do I want to create?

How do I want to feel in our bodies?"

Our identities drive everything, and so if you have an identity around the fact that

you're the fat girl, or you're the fat guy, or whatever it is, ask yourself, "Where is

that being driven from?

Who told me that?

Do I believe that?

Why did I choose to take that on?"

[00:02:00] Maybe you weren't even aware that you took it on at such a young age, but it's

present now.

Just like we are the creators of everything that's in our lives, we're also the destroyers.

We can destroy the things that are not serving us so that we can create things that are in

alignment.

Ask yourself, "What's the reality of what I want, and what is the new identity or story

that I get to create to allow that to become a reality?"

Our identities shape everything for us.

[00:02:30] Number two, and this is an obvious one, but social media.

We get it that this is obvious, but are you still following #Thinspiration and all that

garbage that is making you feel like you're awful looking, and you have horrible whatever,

and you're not perfect?

I did that for years.

I was constantly scrolling through all of this thinspiration, and fitspiration, and

it just made me feel like shit constantly.

Social media is a beautiful tool, but filter it for yourself.

Filter it under the filter of happiness.

How does this make me feel when I look at this image?

If it makes you feel depleted, if it makes you feel sad, if you're comparing yourself,

get rid of it.

Don't even ask yourself the question.

[00:03:00] Why are you addicted to the struggle of comparing yourself to other people?

Get clear with yourself and ask yourself, "How do I want to feel, and what do I need

to filter in my feed for me to feel more of those sensations?"

[00:03:30] You know, here's the thing, happiness is our natural state as humans, we just kind

of screw it up along the way.

We become addicted to struggling, we think that if I compare myself enough, I can shame

my way to happiness, and everything will be perfect.

No, no.

Filter your information.

Follow people who inspire you, who light you up, like Hungry for Happiness.

Just kidding, not really though.

But filter your information so that it makes your soul feel really good, because ultimately,

when we are feeling good, we're going to do things that allow us to feel even more of

that.

If we're feeling bad about ourselves, we're going to binge eat, and we're going to go

down that rabbit hole.

If we're feeling so nourished, and so alive, and so vibrant, we're going to choose to do

things that are just going to escalate that even more.

[00:04:00] What are you choosing, and how are you filtering that information on a regular

basis?

What we have to understand is what we achieve in our external world has nothing to do with

our body image, nothing to do with our body image.

So often, we use our body as like, "I can't apply for that job because I'm not skinny

enough yet," or, "I can't put myself out there," or, "I can't date that boy," or, "I can't

do this."

Ignore all of that.

[00:04:30] Maybe you have a story around like, "Skinny girls get what they want," or whatever

that is.

I don't know what your story is, but get clear on what that is, and understand that self-worth

and the feeling of feeling good in your body is going to come from within.

Happiness is an inside out job.

You're never going to force your way into happiness, it's all going to come from you

creating it internally, and creating it in your body.

[00:05:00] There's so many videos on my channel about this, and so if you have not gotten

into that, go check those out.

Understand that you achieving, and you hustling for your worth is not going to make you feel

any better about your body.

Know that it's an inside out job.

It does not come from anything in your external world.

[00:05:30] Okay, in a moment here, I am going to share with you my ninja strategy that took

me from an intense hatred of my body, into a loving and peaceful state, but before I

do that, if you've not gotten in on our Five Day Food Freedom Challenge, go do that what.

What are you waiting for?

It's a totally free five day challenge where I'm going to walk you through step, by step,

by step and give you tools and strategies to finally end the battle you have with food

and your body.

If you've not done that yet, click the link below, and go do that.

All right, so my number one ninja strategy, here we go.

Honesty.

Be honest with where you're at.

Don't kid yourself.

If you hate your body, looking in the mirror and saying, "I love my body," a thousand times

a day is not going to make you love your body.

You've got to be honest where you're at.

Acceptance is everything.

[00:06:00] I accept the fact that I do not like my body right now, and my intention is

to learn to love my body.

I did a video on this, and it's called The Negative Side of Body Positivity.

Go check it out if you're unclear about what I mean by that, but we have to be honest with

where we're at, because once we have the honesty, then we have the acceptance, and from that

place we can truly transform.

If we hate our bodies and we're trying to convince ourselves that we love our bodies,

it's not going to work.

Sorry.

Go check out that video so you know what I mean.

[00:06:30] All right, if you liked this video, give me a thumbs up.

If you didn't like it, give me a thumbs down.

Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions about anything else.

If you have a video you want me to share, let me know in the comments, let's get the

conversation going.

I am here to support you to end the battle with food and your body, so however I can

be of service to you to make sure that gets done, let's do this together.

Thank you so much, have an amazing day, and we'll see you next Thursday.

Bye for now.

How Gaslighting Manipulates Your Mind | Field Guide to Bad Behaviour - Duration: 5:27.

Have you ever encountered a lie so blatant that it seems improbable someone would actually

use it?

So improbable that you start wondering maybe you are missing something or misremembering

a story?

Has anyone ever made you question your reality?

Have you ever been gaslighted?

This is another Field Guide to Bad Behaviour.

Let's explore how to navigate the wilderness of human nature.

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse and thought manipulation, with the aim of planting

doubts in the mind of a person or a group of people, to make them question their own

memory and perception of reality.

It's been spotted in abusive relationships, where it can destabilize the victim, make

them unable to think clearly and so become dependent on the abuser.

It also lives in the social domain and the political arena, where it's used as a tactic

to preserve inequality or gain political dominance over large groups of people.

Gaslighting may first appear as an honest logical disagreement.

But you can identify it by its telling signs such as: repeated lying, persistent denial

of facts and evidence, misdirection and contradiction.

The term comes from a 1938 play called Gas Light and its movie adaptations, in which

a husband misplaces objects and blames it on the wife in order to convince her she's

losing her mind and should be institutionalized.

He also tells her the occasional dimming of gas lights in the house is just a fragment

of her imagination.

In reality, the gas lights flicker because he's turned on the attic's lights, secretly

searching for valuables.

Gaslighting as a behavior was first noted in a clinical report in 1969, which included

a handful of cases where people were sent to a mental hospital through an elaborate

plot designed to make them look mentally ill.

This pure form of gaslighting, in which the manipulator intentionally plots to make someone

look insane and get rid of them, is quite rare.

More often gaslighting involves a desire to gain influence over someone and keep them

around or keep them from causing trouble.

In relationships, gaslighters may repeatedly deny any wrongdoing, even in the face of solid

evidence.

In the workplace, an employee who's left out of meetings might be told she's just

paranoid and someone who's experienced harassment may hear their just too sensitive.

The idea is to ignore facts, erode a person's judgment and coerce them into believing alternative

narrative.

And this strategy works magic in politics.

Although circumventing facts and pushing agendas to masses of people is nothing new, the term

saw a spike in interest during the 2016 presidential election in the US and gained a new mainstream

recognition.

Gaslighting hasn't been studied extensively and we don't fully understand what exactly

drives this behaviour.

But we can take a look at its components: compulsive lying and intolerance for opposition

The ability to lie and manipulate others is a universal human trait that emerges early

on in childhood.

Researchers speculate that it may have given us an advantage by replacing the need to use

physical force to get what we want.

But most people have limits.

Gaslighters, though, lie compulsively and only make up even bigger ones when confronted.

Compulsive lying is a symptom associated with psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder.

And according to philosopher Kate Abromson of Indiana University, gaslighters can't tolerate

any challenge to the way they see things.

The anxiety about the possibility of disagreement leads gaslighters to try to erode the other

person of their sense of judgment and independent perspective.

So, how can you turn off the gas?

Stopping gaslighting isn't easy, but you can start by taking these steps:

Pay careful attention to your own experience.

Instead of doubting yourself ask the opinion of a third person.

And check in with them regularly.

When stuck in a problematic relationship, seek help from a therapist.

And note that not everyone gaslights intentionally.

Be aware of your own behaviours as well as those of others.

Bullet points of actions

Human relationships can be strange and treacherous.

But if you know what red flags to look for you can try to avoid falling into some traps.

Until next time.

Ford GT - Everything You Need to Know | Up to Speed - Duration: 11:11.

(car engine revving)

- Cats vs Dogs.

Good vs evil.

Me vs Bart.

These are some of the greatest rivalries of all time,

but none of them hold a candle to the clash of titans

that went down at Le Mans in the 1960's.

From this meeting of giants came the greatest sports car

the Ford motor company has ever produced!

It's a motor sport legend that changed the way people

perceived American cars around the world.

And put Ford at the top of the food chain.

This is everything you need to know to get up to speed

on the Ford GT.

(electronic music)

Our story begins in 1963. Italy.

Henry Ford II was in talks with Enzo Ferrari

to buy the Ferrari brand and the deal was

at the cusp of completion.

Ford wanted to improve their image for performance

because they didn't really have one.

So instead of building a whole new car,

Henry decided it would just be easier to buy up

a struggling sports car brand from Europe.

Luckily, at the time, Ferrari was a struggling car brand

from Europe.

But as Enzo was about to sign the contract

selling his namesake to the Americans, he noticed a

clause that he hadn't seen earlier.

With the agreement Ford would own the Ferrar--

(laughs)

I was choking on my spit.

With the agreement Ford would own both the Ferrari

road car division, and the race team.

Enzo did not like that.

Ferrari stormed out of the room with his lawyer in tow,

leaving the Ford guys scratching their little noggins.

Back home in Dearborn, Henry Ford II gathered

his most trusted associates and gave them an order.

"Build a car that'll crush Ferrari."

To do that, the Ford motor company turned

to British Racing Boutique

♪ L-O-L-A Lola ♪

The Lola company had competed in Le Mans before,

and used Ford small block V8's to do it.

Knowing this, Ford offered to do a collab

on their new race car.

Kind of like Nelly and Tim Mcgraw.

Ford's first car based on the Lola, the GT40 MK1,

didn't do so hot when they first took it to France in 1964.

All three cars they took broke down.

Clearly, Ford had some work to do.

The man Ford hired to right the sinking ship was none other

than Texan Chicken Farmer and American hero, Carroll

(beep)

Shelby.

- My name's Carroll Shelby and performance is my business.

- His Daytona Coupe had won it's class the same year

all the Fords broke, so Henry figured that if there

was anyone who could help beat Ferrari, it was him.

Shelby and his team started tinkering with the GT40.

They took the MK1 out to Willow Springs and measured

air movement around the car.

Shelby estimated the GT was losing 75 horsepower

on airflow alone.

So they went back to the shop and redesigned

the inlets and outlets.

They put some big old brakes on it so the car

would stop faster for longer.

Then, Shelby did what Shelby did best.

He turned the motor to make over 450 horsepowers.

(car engine revving)

They took the GT to one of America's most hallowed

endurance races--raceses.

The 2000 kilometers of Daytona.

That's 1242.74 miles for you frickin' yanks.

No one knew how the Ford would do.

Ferrari had won the previous year, and their car

for the 1965 season was brand new.

To beat Ferrari in Daytona would be a huge boost to morale.

Kind of like pizza day here at Donut.

- There's pizza?

- [Man] No.

- Oh. Damn.

- Luckily for Shelby's team, the Ferrari blew a tire

letting the GT gain a huge lead and take the win.

Not so luckily, the victory at Daytona would be the

only win for the entire season.

Even worse, Ferrari won at Le Mans that year.

Again.

(thunder booming)

Ferrari!

In 1966 Henry Ford II is getting a little antsy

in his little pantsies.

They put so much time and money into these cars

but have nothing to show for it.

Enzo Ferrari is chilling back at Maranello

laughing to himself every night before he goes to sleep.

(throaty laugh)

"Not this year," Henry thought to himself.

They had to win.

Shelby redesigned the GT again, this time with a

Goliath seven-liter V8.

The 427 was good for 485 horsepower.

It was the same engine Ford was using in NASCAR.

It was American as--

(beep)

But Shelby wouldn't be the only guys racing for Ford.

Since Henry was getting a little impatient,

he brought in Holman Moody, the guys in charge

of Ford's NASCAR program.

Henry figured having two teams would create some competition

and better his chances of beating Ferrari.

And, guess what, he was right.

The two Ford teams fought hard all season,

and when they arrived at Le Mans, it was frickin' on.

Ford had to remind them, "Hey, you're hear to beat Ferrari.

Settle your differences on your own time."

As the green flag dropped on race day, the GTs were off

to a great start.

And by 3AM that morning, three of Shelby's cars

were in the lead.

And the Ferrari team had suffered serious damage

on their most dominant cars.

The hours and laps went by with each becoming

more tense than the last.

Could Ford finally win?

At 4PM, two Shelby's and one Holman Moody crossed

the finish line in Le Mans in a triangle formation.

Ford had beat Ferrari.

(beep)

I just almost started crying.

(laughs)

The GT would win three more races at Le Mans,

cementing it as one of the greatest sports cars of all time.

It proved that Americans could win at the race track,

not just at the ovals, but at the most hallowed ground

in all of European motor sports.

It was kind of a big deal.

Ford continued the GT program with the GT70,

except this GT wasn't meant for Le Mans.

It was deigned for the dusty back roads of the

World Rally Circuit.

Ford UK wanted to beat Lancia and Portia in the rally game

like they had done in NASCAR and at Le Mans.

But unlike those efforts, the GT70 didn't really work out,

and the project was scrapped in 1973.

After that, Ford didn't really make any more sports cars.

They made sporty cars, like the Mustang and Escort,

but nothing that captured that classic world-beating

Le Mans fight flavor of the GT40.

But, in 1995 Ford unveiled a new concept called the GT90.

Ford took the Chassis from the Jaguar XJ220 Supercar

and put a quad turbo V12 behind the driver.

This insane power plant made the GT90 concept the fastest

car in the world with a top speed of 253 miles an hour.

In 1995.

Coolio was still on the Billboard Hot 100

and this thing was putting up Bugatti Veyron numbers.

But sadly the GT90 was just a one-off concept car

and never went into production.

Ford fans would never see the GT name again.

(sad music)

Until 2002.

It had been nearly 60 years since Henry Ford II's deal

with Ferrari fell through.

And to commemorate Ford's crowning achievement,

they introduced their GT40 concept car to the world

at the Detroit Auto Show.

And unlike the GT90 before it, this GT actually

made it to production in 2004.

The GT made 550 horsepower from a 5.4-liter supercharged V8.

(car engine revving)

Some people think the engine is the same

as the Ford Lightnings, but the GT's was all aluminum,

had more valves, duel fuel injectors, a dry sump system,

and piston skirt oil squirters.

The GT40 was in projection from 2004-2006,

and in that short time, it reminded the world that Ford

could make a stellar supercar.

But it would be 10 more years until the GT returned

to Le Mans.

In January 2015, Mariah Carey was single again.

Shia Labeouf was in that Sia video, and most importantly,

Ford shocked the world yet another time!

(thunder crashing)

With the reveal of the 2016 Ford GT at the

Detroit Auto Show.

People lost their frickin' minds.

It's the coolest car I have ever seen.

And I saw the Weinermobile twice.

The new GT is powered by a twin-turbo ecoboost V6

this time around, making 647 horsepower.

The car is almost entirely carbon-fiber,

weighing in at just over 3000 pounds.

Only twice as much as my dad.

Buttresses are sculpted into the sides of the body,

reducing drag and guiding air to the rear wing.

That wing deploys at high speeds to keep the tail in check,

and flattens when you step on the brakes

to slow the car down.

If you want to take your GT to the track,

you don't have to worry about installing a cage,

because it already has a cage.

This thing is a real race car for the road.

I've driven one.

I drove it before the Stig did.

You know, we have a lot in common because we're both

professional drivers.

The race version of the GT differed from the street one

in a few key ways.

Front splitter, rear diffuser, a fixed wing,

and exhaust outlets inside the taillights.

Sick.

It was no coincidence that Ford chose 2016

as the launch year of the GT.

It would be the 50th anniversary since their victory

over Ferrari at Le Mans.

And Ford wanted to go back and win again.

That would be pretty sweet, but other people

like winning too.

Ford rivals Chevy and Ferrari weren't going to let old blue

take the wind just because it was his anniversary

If Ford wanted the checkered flag, they were gonna

have to work for it.

The way to the Ford's name was on this team's shoulders.

Miraculously, two American GT's locked out the front row

in qualifying with Ferrari close behind in third.

The stage was set for war!

With heavy rain pouring on the track, the 2016 24-hours

of Le Mans started behind the safety car.

After the start, Ford traded the lead with Ferrari all day,

battling mechanical issues and other cars along the way.

At certain points, it looked like Ford wouldn't be grasping

at victory that day.

But then, with four and a half hours left,

the number 68 GT pulled off a pass on the leading Ferrari

down the Mulsanne Straight.

A few laps later, the Ferrari spun, giving the Ford

plenty of breathing room.

All they had to do was hold on until the end.

Then, as the checkered flag waved, the number 68 crossed

the finish line, securing the LMGT pro-class victory.

Ford had won Le Mans.

(laughs) (beeps)

Holy sh**.

I started crying, it's such a good story.

How can you make quicker decisions? - Duration: 1:56.

(funky music)

Many of you are in a relationship,

in a relationship with your spouse, your parents,

your roommate, your boss, whoever.

And when you're in a relationship you're constantly making

decisions together.

I know my wife Leslie and I we're constantly trying to

figure out what are we gonna have for dinner,

where are we gonna go on vacation,

what movie do we wanna watch tonight on Netflix,

just the basics of moving through life.

And if you're like Leslie and I sometimes you struggle

to make these small seemingly tiny decisions

so what do you do?

Well here's a tool that works for us,

it's called the duck scale.

It's a tool to help give your opinion a velocity.

So you know how important it is to each other.

So picture a child, small child getting super excited

and like flapping like a duck like so enthusiastic

about something.

That's a 10 out of 10 on the duck scale.

But picture somebody who just doesn't care,

they're like yeah yeah I don't care,

romantic comedy or drama, whatever, horror movie.

They're like a zero.

They don't care about what movie they watch,

they just wanna like sit in a chair.

That's all they care about.

Well you say to your partner,

oh what do you feel like for dinner tonight honey?

I feel like Thai food, what about you?

I feel like spaghetti and meatballs.

Hmm, where is it on your duck scale?

Eh, for me I'll say it's like a two.

I don't really care what I eat but if you wanna ask

me I'll pick Thai.

What about you?

It's a nine, I've been craving my grandmother's homemade

meatballs for weeks, I got the recipe out,

finally picked up some new tomato sauce,

like can we please have spaghetti and meatballs?

And I'll say sure, it's a nine for you.

It's super important.

You just clarified how important this decision is.

When you have decisions to make together you often

have different opinions.

But if you give your opinions a velocity or a measure

in an open and transparent way to measure how important

they are to each other it helps you expedite

those decisions and make things a little quicker

and easier. (funky music)

My IOU to you and getting batteries - Duration: 5:39.

All right, love you

Bye see you after school

Hey guys, how's it going so I am on my way to school right now

Yeah night school for college I am taking a writing class right now and intro to psychology

Working towards a bachelor's degree in psychology, but I wanted to make a vlog today and talk to you guys a little bit about something

But it's gonna have to wait until after class unfortunately just kidding

I

Remembered I had to make a quick stop at the PX real quick to pick up batteries for my wife because she's got a land

Navigation course tonight and tomorrow morning, so she needs it for a little

Fleshly, let's go get him real quick

All right got the batteries last time to go to class

Is over now so

We are on our way home, she's got a navigate through base, but what I wanted to talk to you about actually was I

started doing the daily vlogs and

I said I was gonna do a year-long vlog. I got probably about

A month into it and I slowed off and stopped

Walldog a little bit further than that actually. I got to just before I left for Italy

And I slid off and stopped doing the vlog

No real reason in particular, I guess other than just the fact that I got lazy with it and

Ran out of ideas because I was pressuring myself too much

to

Think of okay, I need to go out

I need to do something it needs to be an event it needs to be some kind of big thing

But then I realized by watching KC's KC nice tats

vlogs

again that

He's just vlogging his life, and even says that he he blogs his life

Whether it's something interesting or not he does it, and he's doing it for the sole fact of just creating good valuable content

And I thought about that I'm a thing about that for a while now

so that being said I'm going to be going back to making daily content and

posting up daily blogs

Some of them will be videogame posts to build that gaming playlist that I said other ones will be vlogs like this

I'm gonna try maybe figure out a way to where I can incorporate on vlog

with this

This gaming posts here, so there's there's gonna be a few things. I'm going playing around with I'm also eating new equipment here soon and

I'm really looking forward to getting back into making these daily vlogs plus. I just feel like

just

Not sitting, I'm gonna do it for a year

And having that mentality that I need to always be doing something like

going to Disneyland or Rama Rama or whatever like going out doing something instead of actually just

Posting up content taking video and pictures

things that interest me and

Sharing them with you guys and bring you guys into my world so we can build that friendship

I feel like it's gonna really help keep me motivated

and it kind of

Puts the fun back into it

Too whereas before it was kind of a grind because I was racking my brain to try and come up with content and ideas

Go do so I'm looking forward to it

it's gonna be fun and

I'm gonna be doing this this daily vlog posting again. Thanks for joining me today

It's time to walk out the Misses. She's got her lad nav course

She's getting ready for it right now, so I'm gonna wrap it up tonight. You all have a good night and

Looking forward to seeing you guys tomorrow

Hey

Homeless Stumbles & Solutions - Duration: 6:40.

>>> GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO

METROFOCUS.

I'M RAFAEL PI RAMAN.

TONIGHT AGENCY PART OF OUR

ONGOING INITIATIVE CLAYSING THE

DREAM, POVERTY AND OPPORTUNITY

IN AMERICA, WE ARE HONORED TO

HAVE ONE OF NEW YORK CITY'S BEST

KNOWN ADVOCATES FOR THE

HOMELESS.

DURING HER LONG TENURE AT THE

COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS SHE

HAS ADVOCATED FOR THE CITY'S

NEEDIEST THROUGH FIVE MAYORAL

ADMINISTRATIONS AND UNDER HER

LEADERSHIP AND PRESIDENT AND CEO

FT. COALITION, THE GROUP HAS

BECOME KNOWN AS THE DEFENDERS OF

THE HOMELESS BOASTING A $12

MILLION BUDGE AND INFLUENCE THAT

EXTENDS FROM CITY HALL TO

ALBANY.

IT'S KNOWN FOR SERVICE PROGRAMS

INCLUDING THE NATION'S LARGEST

SOUP KITCHEN AND THE SLEEP AWAY

CAMP FOR HOMELESS KIDS.

NOW AFTER 30 YEARS SHE IS

STEPPING DOWN BUT CONTINUING TO

BE AN ADVOCATE FOR HOUSING AND A

CRITIC OF ELECTED LEADERS TO SHE

CASE COULD BE DOING MORE.

SHE JOINS US NOW MARY WELCOME

BACK TO THE PROGRAM.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I THINK I'VE BEEN

INTERVIEWING YOU AS LONG AS

YOU'VE BEEN WITH THE COALITION.

>> I THINK SO.

>> MARY, NEW YORK'S HOMELESS

POPULATION IS NOW OVER 63,000.

>> THE LARGEST NUMBER EVER.

>> YES AND.

>> AND ALTHOUGH THE FIGURES

FLUCTUATE A BIT IT SEEMS TO BE

GETTING WORSE, NOT BETTER.

>> WHY.

>> ANYBODY WALKING DOWN THE

STREET CAN SEE THAT.

>> YES.

>> WHEN YOU SAY 63,000 IT'S

SHOCKING.

KEEP IN MIND THAT'S ON ANY GIVEN

NIGHT.

OVER THE COURSE OF A YEAR

TALKING UPWARDS OF 130,000

DIFFERENT PEOPLE INCLUDING

45,000 KIDS CIRCLING THROUGH THE

SHELTER SYSTEM.

AND THE BOTTOM LINE AS YOU KNOW

SINCE YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THIS

SO CLOSELY FOR SO LONG IS THE

LACK OF HOUSING WITH SUPPORT

SERVICES.

AND THAT TAKES DIFFERENT FORMS.

BUT PEOPLE RUN NAG GAUNTLET ON

THE STREETS OF OUR CITIES SEE

PEOPLE NEEDING HELP AND ALSO ARE

AWARE THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF

PEOPLE THAT WE'RE NOT SEEING,

ESPECIALLY THE KIDS, SUFFERING

IN SILENCE.

>> TWO YEARS AGO THE MAYOR

PROMISED 15,000 UNITS OF

SUPPORTIVE APARTMENTS.

>> OVER 15 YEARS.

>> WHAT'S THE SUPPORTIVE

HOUSING.

>> IT TAKES MANY FORMS.

BUT THE COIS FOR PEOPLE WITH

MENTAL ILLNESS TO HAVE THE

ON-SITE SOCIAL SERVICE COMPONENT

SO IF SOMEBODY STOPS TAKING KMG

MEDICATION THIS IS A SOCIAL

WORKER TO INTERWHEEN NP AND WHEN

THEY COME BACK FROM THE

HOSPITALIZATION THAT UNIT OF

HOUSE SOMETHING WAITING.

THERE IS ALSO A MODEL WHERE WE

CAN BRING PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS

AND PUT THEM IN-HOUSING BECAUSE

AS MUCH AS WE ARE TRYING TO

REFORM THE SHELTDER SYSTEM, THE

FRONT END THE OF THE SYSTEM

REMAINS LARGELY CHAOTIC WITH

HUGE ARMORY STYLE SHELTERS.

THE PEOPLE WITH THE MENTAL

ILLNESS ARE THE FIRST PREYED

UPON.

ALTHOUGH IT SEEMS

COUNTERINTUITIVE WHEN YOU SEE A

MENTALLY ILL PERSON ON THE

STREET MANY TIMES IN THEIR MIND

THEY'RE MAKING A RAMBLER

DECISION NOT TO ENTER THE

SHELTER SYSTEM.

>> AS I SAID THE MAYOR PROMISED

15,000 AND NOW YOU HAVE TWO

HUNDRED.

15,000 IN 15 YEARS THAT'S

ALREADY TOO LONG.

>> RIGHT.

>> BUT IT SEEMS TO BE SLOWER

THAN EXPECTED.

>> IT IS.

>> WHAT ARE THE ROAD BLOCKS.

>> KNOWS ARE SITING ISSUES, ALSO

GETTING THE NON-PROFITS TO RAMP

UP PRODUCTION.

AS YOU CAN SEE -- WELL YOU COVER

SO MANY ASPECTS OF THIS ISSUE.

IT'S JUST NEW YORK IS BECOMING

INCREASINGLY NOT AFFORDABLE.

>> RIGHT.

>> AND SO FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO

ARE ON THE BOTTOM RUNG OR AREN'T

ABLE TO COMPETE IN THE HOUSING

MECHANIC IT'S TAKING MORE

FORCEFUL MAYORAL INTERVENTION TO

GET AHOLD OF THE SITES AND

ACCELERATE THE CREATION OF THE

HOUSING.

THAT'S WHY OTHER ALTERNATIVES

LIKE THE SCATTERED SITE MODEL,

GETTING THE HOUSING IN THE

PRIVATE MARKET FOR INSTANCE AND

BRINGING PEOPLE DIRECTLY OFF THE

STREETS, YOU KNOW WHEN OUTREACH

WORKERS APPROACH PEOPLE ANY

DON'T WANT A VAN RIDE TO THE

SHELTER THEY KNOW WHAT THAT

MEANS.

>> IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES THAT

WE HAVE LEFT, WHAT IS THE

BIGGEST THING ABOUT THE HOMELESS

IN NEW YORK CITY THAT YOU THINK

WOULD SURPRISE NEW YORKERS?

>> WELL, I -- YOU KNOW, ONE OF

THE HONORS OF WORKING AT THE

COAL SIGS TALKING TO HOMELESS

NEW YORKERS.

AND YOU KNOW ESPECIALLY WITH THE

KIDS, YOU KNOW, I HAVE A SON

MYSELF.

AND AGAIN AND AGAIN BEING

SURPRISED AT RESILIENCY.

BUT THE KIDS ARE CHILDREN JUST

LIKE OUR CHILDREN AND HAVE THE

SAME DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS AND

NEED A FAIR SHOT.

SHE NEED STABLTD IN THEIR LIVES.

I KNOW JUST FOR INSTANCE COMING

ON THE SUBWAY UP HERE TODAY I'M

SURE I -- GIVEN THE ASTRONOMICAL

NUMBERS AS WE MAKE OUR WAY WE

CROSS PATHS WITH THE HOMELESS

KIDS.

AND THAT THESE ARE PEOPLE LIKE

US.

AND ALSO FOR THE HOME LETS

PEOPLE ON THE STREET I THINK

THERE IS THE MYTH OUT THERE THAT

THEY DON'T WANT HOUSING.

WELL WHAT THEY DON'T WANT AS I

SAID IS A TRIP TO AN ARMORY

SHELTER.

WHAT THEY WANT IS WHAT YOU AND I

WANT.

NEPT A DOOR THAT LOCKS.

THAT'S SANCTUARY.

>> AS DIRE AS THE SITUATION IS.

>> UM-HUM.

>> BY ALMOST ALL ACCOUNTS IT

WOULD BE A LOT WORSE IF NOT FOR

THE COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS

AND YOUR TENURE DURING THE

COALITION.

DURING 30 YEARS.

>> UM-HUM.

>> WHY ARE YOU LEAVING?

>> YOU KNOW, I JUST -- I THINK

EVERY LIFE SHOULD HAVE CHAPTERS.

I FELT LIKE 30 YEARS IS A POINT

IN TIME I SHOULD TAKE A BEAT AND

FIGURE OUT THE NEXT CHAPTER IN

MY LIFE.

I CAME TO NEW YORK FROM THE

MIDWEST LIKE SO MANY.

AND WHATEVER IT IS I'M SURE IT

WILL BE EXCITING AND I'LL

CONTRIBUTE IN ANOTHER WAY.

YOU KNOW, I THINK SOMETIMES YOU

HAVE TO SORT OF LEAP AND THEN

KNOW THAT THE NET WILL APPEAR.

I THINK.

>> YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT

YOU'RE DOING NEXT.

I'VE BEEN DOING SOME WRITING.

YOU KNOW, BUT WHATEVER I DO,

JUST BEING INVOLVED ON A

VOLUNTEER LEVEL AT A PANTRY AT

MY SON'S SCHOOL, WE CAN ALL KEEP

INVOLVED.

THAT'S THE KEY.

BECAUSE THROUGH THE VOLUNTEER

OPPORTUNITIES THAT'S WHEN WE

REALLY CONNECT WITH THE HUMANITY

OF OUR POOREST NEIGHBORS.

>> WELL, MARY YOU ARE A REAL NEW

YORK HERO AS FAR AS I'M

CONCERNED.

I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE WORK

YOU'VE DONE THE LAST 30 YEARS.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US

TODAY.

>> THANK YOU. 228 00:06:34,594 SUCH A PLEASURE.

Ep. 8: Did you know butterflies are nanotechnologists? - Duration: 1:55.

Nature is one of the greatest invention machines in the universe. In this video,

Professor Jennifer Chen explains how one insect is inspiring the development of new technologies.

Nature has inspired some ingenious technologies. Probably the

best known instance of biomimicry is velcro, which is inspired by the tiny

hooks on burs. It turns out that butterfly wings are also one of nature's

most creative inventions. You've probably seen shiny brightly coloured butterflies

before. Did you know these colours are actually produced by layers and layers

of nano structures that scatter light? And actually, some scientists are now

mimicking these structures for technologies like solar cells and other

applications requiring precise manipulation of light. So how exactly do

these structures create bright colours? Let's take the wings of the male Blue

Morpho butterfly for instance — which appears bright blue. The wing material

itself is not blue. Rather, the nano structures on the butterfly's wings are

about the same size as the wavelength of visible light, which is 400 to 700 nanometres.

And because they're layered on top of one another, they reflect light

and inevitably cause the wavelengths to interfere. Some wavelengths run into each

other and add together, and this is called constructive interference whereas

others cancel each other out, and this is called destructive interference. For the

Blue Morpho butterfly, constructive interference occurs for the blue

wavelengths, around 450 nanometers, and destructive interference for the other

wavelengths, so we see a single bright blue colour. Butterflies are just one

example of how nature can teach us a thing or two about design and technology.
