[ ♪ INTRO ]

You know that feeling.

All of a sudden, you hear your jam, and whether you're in the club or your living room or

a grocery store, you get that urge to just.... [music]

Start to do the move!

Well, While your moves probably aren't quite as awesome as mine, that's okay.

They're totally unique to you.

And weirdly enough, that means that people can actually learn a lot about you just from

watching you boogie down—and you can learn about them, too.

Dancing is one of the oldest forms of cultural expression and every studied culture around

the world does it.

It might be so ubiquitous because our brains just seem to like it, especially when we're

doing it with someone else.

Studies have shown that dancing with a partner makes us happier, for example, and that regular

dancing can slow age-related cognitive declines.

Plus, old people dancing is adorable.

But it turns out dancing doesn't just improve our happiness or health.

It also tells us a lot about other people.

It's a part of what psychologists call social cognition, which is basically how we make

sense of information about other people and social situations.

And it includes things like the intel we gain from reading facial expressions or tracking

what other people are looking at.

These subtle signals can help us avoid danger, get along with others, or take cues from their

behavior.

And scientists have found that we can glean a lot just by watching someone dance.

Kids can accurately interpret emotions from dance by age four or five, for example, and

can also depict a requested emotion by, say, making their teddy bear dance.

And adults can figure out emotions just from point-light displays.

You know, like those videos where LEDs are attached to someone's joints in the dark

and it all seems like random dots of light… but then something kind of snaps into place

and you realize it's somebody cycling or walking.

Well studies have found that we can tell emotions just by looking at those while someone dances.

But reading emotions is just the tip of the iceberg—or, the toe of the point shoe?

Studies suggest dancing might also relay key information about potential mates.

For example, a 2015 study involving 75 men and 84 women found that the women's judgments

of men dancing correlated with the guys' grip strength.

The men, however, weren't able to pick out the stronger women based on how good their

dancing was, suggesting that men and women extract different intel from the quality of

their potential partner's dance moves.

In case you were wondering, this quote-unquote "good dancing" is quantifiable, at least

when it comes to what specific groups of people generally find attractive.

A 2010 European study found that men were rated as good dancers depending on how much

and how variably they moved their neck and torso and also on how fast they moved their

right knee.

But not the left one, weirdly enough.

So just get that… boy going!

And a similar 2017 study found that good dancing in women involved big hip movements and moving

their right and left limbs independently of one other.

So get one up here and on up there.

Why these movements were deemed attractive isn't clear, and it's possible that the

definition of "good dancing" differs culturally or changes over time.

But it's still likely that the hottest dance moves seem so attractive because of the information

they convey.

And that includes things that aren't physical.

You can get an idea of who a person is from the way they twerk as well.

A 2011 study of 50 men and 60 women found that the women could detect risk-taking in

men based on how good their dancing was, for example.

Risk-taking is associated with good health and vigor and having lots of testosterone,

so it could potentially signal a good mate.

And a 2009 study found that there was a correlation between the way people danced and the 'Big

Five' personality traits, which are part of a popular model of personality that puts

everyone on a sliding scale for each of five overarching traits.

There were only 20 participants, so it was a pretty small study.

But, when researchers recorded and tracked the spontaneous dance moves that the participants

did to twelve measures of bluesy music, they did find correlations between how they moved

and how they scored on a personality assessment.

Those who scored high on neuroticism were more likely to have jerky movements, while

those who scored high on openness and agreeableness tended to have smoother ones.

And extraversion and conscientiousness were both related to faster movement.

So all you need to do to figure somebody out is be like, "Hey, show me your moves!", right?

Because that won't be weird at all.

Well, here's some good news!

You don't necessarily have to watch them dance—just dance a lot yourself.

Studies have found that people with a lot of dance experience are better at reading

other people.

And that may be because physically and mentally challenging activities can shape your brain.

A whole variety of different kinds of movement and gaming activities, from sports to video

games to chess, have actually been shown to improve cognitive skills, including social cognition.

For example, studies have found people with more experience dancing are better at making

sense of other people's dancing.

That may be because dance causes more activity in brain regions involved in mirroring for

them, which means that the parts of their brain involved in actually dancing really

light up when they watch other people dance.

This kind of neural mirroring is thought to be a big part of accurately interpreting social signals.

And in a 2017 study of 61 people who like to dance to hip hop, the more hip hop dancing

experience they had, the better they were at assessing the emotional state of people's

faces in photos.

From that, the researchers concluded that dancing made them better at social cognition

tasks even when those tasks weren't related to dancing.

So maybe Meghan Trainor is onto something.

Because whether you dance like yo daddy, move like yo momma, or just do what you wanna,

psychologists think dancing not only tells others about you, it might help you tell you

more about them.

And that's helpful whether you're looking for a dance partner or interviewing for the

job you've always wanted.

So get out there because science telling you to bust that move!

Keyword Golden Ratio Using SEM Rush - Duration: 19:18.

in this video we're gonna take a look at exactly how I use SEMRush to find kgr

terms now when I first started testing the keyword golden ratio I used

SEMRush almost exclusively to try and figure out what keywords to go for it

and it took me several months to figure out like the right filters to use and by

the way that's what I'm going to kind of show you in this there are four or five

filters that you can set up and tweak to really narrow it down so I'm going to

show you which filters I use and when to use them and the thing is you can narrow

down tens of thousands of keywords to a few dozen keywords that you can check

with pretty good confidence that those are the kind of keywords that will be

keyword golden ratio terms now I use semrush when I was testing the kgr and

in one of the later videos I'm going to tell you about a case study where I

published like 200 posts on one site and grew the revenue from about a hundred

dollars per month to about fourteen thousand eight hundred dollars within

twelve months just by publishing keyword golden ratio terms no link alright

so that's what we're looking at today now be sure if you haven't watched the

other videos be sure to check out some of the other videos in this playlist in

fact what you'll need to do after you get the list of keywords from SEMRush

you'll need to use the worksheet for the kg ARS and that is I showed you how to

use that in the first video of this playlist so be sure to check it out if

you haven't and let's go ahead and get to the demo right now we're looking at

some rush right now and this is the paid version this is the full version here

and you can get a trial I think for either 7 or 14 days depending on what

they're offering but the affiliate link is below so if you use it thank you I

get a small commission if you actually become a paid customer but even if you

only use this for seven days you can get a ton of value so this is like the main

dashboard and of course the focus of this video is finding keyword golden

ratio terms using SEMRush so there are many

different things you can do with semrush but we're just gonna look at the organic

keywords section because that is most relevant for the keyword golden ratio so

while you can do a lot of stuff we're just gonna focus on the organic keywords

now as you know probably when I tear down sites when we look at other sites

here basically I'm trying not to out anyone else's site so we're gonna look

at a very big site it's owned by a corporation we're gonna look at the wire

cutter so this will still give us a you know an interesting set of data but

we're probably not going to find specific kgr terms but what I'm going to

tell you are strategies so that you can use like some smart filters to get to

the kgr terms for whatever site that you're looking for so there's a couple

things we're gonna take a look at we're just gonna look at the wire cutter right

off the bat so when you're in the dashboard you put in like whatever

website you're looking for I advise you to just put in like the domain name dot

whatever it is comm org don't put in like HTTP colon don't put in the full

like URL like that just look at the you know the overall domain that will give

you the best information as you can see there's a lot of data on here so I'll

just quickly go over a couple things because it's useful so organic search

that's the estimated monthly traffic based on organic search traffic so when

you hover over any of these sections it'll tell you what it is no paid

traffic is being noted here the number of backlinks is listed so five hundred

and thirty six thousand from sixty-five hundred referring domains and by the way

I think the backlink numbers on some rush are not complete

I think aged refs has more data and as far as displayed advertising you know

that's not super relevant here and I basically just look at organic search

and maybe I'll peruse just quickly the backlinks so that's what we're seeing

here next section here shows us like the

geography of where the organic traffic is coming from

as you can see 60% is from the US and another 8.5 percent is from mobile us

and so on so that's interesting to note the other part is they show you the

amount of paid traffic in the organic traffic over time and you can see in

like January February of 2018 like there's huge growth over here at the

wirecutter so that's interesting and it's just been continuous growth like

since it looks like the part we care about is the organic keywords which

we'll take a look at at a sec in a second here but 1.5 million keywords is

what the wire cutter is ranking for and this is you know ranked in the order of

like how much volume it brings in potentially the amount of traffic for

the wire cutter next the organic position distribution is interesting so

there there are thirty two thousand of those keywords are in the top three 114

thousand are in positions four through ten and so on so this is 1.5 million

keywords ranked in the top 100 all right so really the ones that are most

important are the ones that are ranked on the first page in the top 10 if

you're ranked like 11 or beyond you're getting a fraction of the traffic now

the wire cutter because it's so reputable because it's such a big

company maybe they get a little bit more traffic but essentially you're mainly

getting traffic or a website it's getting traffic if they're ranking in

the top ten in google typical another section to point out is the main organic

competitor so it tells you sort of the relative competition level and that is

like common keywords and just in general the number of search engine keywords

that they're ranking for so this means that PC Mag com has 79 thousand keywords

in common with wirecutter top ten review has 41,000 keywords that are in common

with wire car so that's what that means in the competitive positioning map it

sort of gives you a bubble graph so you kind of see like where people are

relative to each other so very interesting very interesting and

that also means that PC Mag has 3.2 million keywords ranking in the top 100

that is why you know they're listed up here the the this graph shows the

organic search traffic I should have pointed this out in the number of

organic keywords so it's a very interesting graph and you know you can

get a decent amount of data relative to like where that site is compared to

other sites so you you get an idea of how many keywords are ranking for and

how much traffic that brings in so if we look here we see that

TechRadar is ranking for like about 3 million keywords and they're getting

like 15 million in the organic traffic or 14 million and if you hover over it

it'll tell you that right there in the graph alright so what we're gonna do

we'll keep looking down so branded search traffic interesting to note

follow a nofollow links so again I don't really look at some rush for the

backlinks if it's the only tool you have and you know it can give you some good

information but if you look at age refs you'll see that you know age refs has a

lot more data on the backlinks okay so now we're going to get over to the more

interesting part so you could click on View full report and then that'll take

you over to

the keyword organic keywords section and it will tell you all these keywords that

the wire cutter is ranking for in the percentage of traffic the estimated

percentage of traffic the each one of those keywords is bringing in for the

wire cutter so air purifier is apparently the number one term right now

right this - this varies and it's a huge search term so one hundred and thirty

five thousand searches per month and it's a very you know difficult keyword

just in general and their ranking number one in Google for that so that's kind of

crazy and so as we as we look at this we see

that 1.5 million keywords is a lot to sort through that is not helpful and one

of the most common questions I get is how can you like find kgr terms a little

bit easier what's a good start so this is how we're gonna do it I'm gonna I did

a little search earlier for best lawnmower as the keyword that we're

going to look at here so you could just type in you know whatever you want to

filter on and this is by the way this is the best way to do it so you know you

you end up on this screen here and you could filter by a keyword so that's how

you can sort of narrow it down if you're looking for buyers keywords which many

of us are looking for buyers keywords you would want to put in the word like

best all right best is usually a good format for these kind of keywords so put

in best you'll want to include something with best

that's in the key word and we wanted to contain that next like I said I just

wanted to narrow it down to lawnmower and I you know there's a couple public

case studies on lawn mowers and and here's the deal I don't think I could be

totally wrong but not that many people are buying on Mohr's online some people

are but it turns out they're heavy right they're heavy pieces of machinery so

most people are probably not buying LA mowers online and you know they're going

down to the hardware store that's local they're going to Home Depot Lowe's

whatever buying it from Ace Hardware right so that's another reason I pick

this one public case study so and we're also looking at the wire cutter so we're

looking at this and we see we've narrowed down from the 1.5 million

keywords here to 1,800 and that's a lot easier to deal with so at this point you

could potentially just export hit export go ahead and you know pull your CSV or

however you want to take your data and then you can sort it a little more

effectively in a spreadsheet format most people are more comfortable working with

the spreadsheet and of course at that point you save some data run some more

interesting filter stuff like that I would say 1800 is still a lot to sort

through so what are some other filters that I and this is sort of like advanced

stuff so it's not complicated but typically it's not the most obvious

thing that people are gonna like try and do so here's what I would do first I'm

gonna say let's um let's say I want to find keywords for the keyword golden

ratio so I want the search volume to be less than let's say 250 stick to the

formula and then I'll click apply so remember we were at 1,800 so let's see

what we end up at here

all right so we got rid of quite a few of them like 45% of them or so so now

we're at a thousand that's still a lot so what other filters could I add so I'm

going to add another filter I'm gonna say how about stuff where the wire

cutter is ranking in the top 20 so that is indicating you know maybe you

know the wire cutter isn't trying to rank for it necessarily and they're in

the top 20 all right so now we're down to 800 so we got rid of another 20% from

where we were at so now we're getting somewhere

so let's say let's add another filter and try and find like longer phrases so

these are typically kgr term is typically a longer phrase so we'll say

number of words is greater than four and I believe this is actually a equal to or

greater than situation so hopefully I didn't test this beforehand so hopefully

this is gonna work out so we're 271 now we're talking so this is you know you're

only looking through a few hundred of these terms at this point so we went

from 1.5 million for all the keywords that the wire cutter is ranking for -

you know narrowing it down to your niche applying some smart filtering techniques

so that you can narrow it down even more and then you're able to you know really

get a handle on some of these keywords that may be really good for kgr terms

and if you recall some of the other videos in this series by the way if you

haven't watched all the playlists or if you haven't watched all the videos in

this playlist then you should definitely check it out I talked to several people

who have used the keyword golden ratio and got like tons of his success right

so here is one little like ninja hack that you may not think of so we're

looking at stuff we're looking at keywords less than with the volume of

less 250 because that'll fit in the keyword

golden ratio so that's great we're narrowing it down quite a bit here

but what if instead we're looking at very low volume keywords so instead of

this 250 let's just sort this the other direction so perhaps we'll get

a picture of you know easier to rank for keywords so now we're looking at

keywords with a search volume of 10 and it's in ascending order here so

basically what we're seeing here is probably most likely keywords that are

much easier to rank for because they have a low volume now here's the deal

right so we have 270 of them or 167 in this list which I'm not sure why that

changed just now but regardless we have 167 my guess is there's probably like 20

or 40 kg our terms in this list right so not every one of these is going to be

great in fact a lot of them are probably not gonna be bad or not gonna be great

they're going to be redundant here's one best rated lawnmowers 2014 right it's

2018 when I'm recording this right now probably not gonna want to do that one

but best push lawnmower under 200 hey that that works that's that's actually a

pretty good one to go up so using these techniques you're gonna find that it's

much easier to find kgr terms now let me go back and show you a little another

little ninja hack right so we have you know we identified this site we wanted

to check out doing keyword research right so the wire cutter has you know

some keywords that we've identified that could be viable to go after so after we

do the you know analysis here I'm gonna export this export it to a CSV use

Google sheets to do further analysis I'm gonna go back to the general wirecutter

- dashboard view here and the main organic competitors we're gonna look at

the full report here what we're going to see is all the competitors that the wire

cutter has and what you can do then is cherry-pick

other sites to do the exact same analysis so you would do what I just

mentioned for PC Magazine for top 10 reviews for best products

TechRadar and so on however many you want to do then you run the same filters

on their organic keywords you export those you can bind all those keywords

into one spreadsheet then you have a sort of aggregated list of the

competitors for the keywords that you're looking for and they're generally sorted

in a you know fashion where or they're filtered in a fashion where you've

already you've cut a lot of the fat out and you're just looking at probably the

keywords that are pretty close to kgr terms and just for fun let's say five

words or more let's see what happens

and now we're talking 90 keywords so much more manageable to run the data at

this point you could you know take this exported file potentially right you can

send it to a VA to check the kgr terms for you one of the biggest complaints I

get about the keyword golden ratio is it's slow it's boring to do and it's

very manual so if you don't want to do it you can hire someone else to do it

now it's not really that bad once you get

going to be honest with you what I find is once I get like one or two terms that

look pretty good I'll find five or six related terms when

you start looking in the you know the Google Auto suggests and the Google

related searches those are just filled with keywords that maybe you didn't

think of those are sometimes zero search volume and if it's showing up as an

autosuggest and zero search volume I'll typically go for it no matter what the

all-in title is now your mileage may vary on that but for me I'm thinking hey

most people are not going to go for a zero all in title but I will so if you

have any questions let me know in the comments below and don't forget check

out the rest of the videos in the playlist should be very helpful for you

if you're trying to apply the kgr

How to Buy A Home That Gives You Options If the Housing Market Declines - Duration: 2:54.

So imagine this. You buy a house and right after the closing papers are

signed, the housing market completely tanks. You watch as the value of your

house drops below your mortgage level and you're upside down. Stuck! This

happened to a lot of homeowners back in 2008 and it's a valid concern. In this

video we'll talk about how to buy a house that is highly rentable to minimize

the risk of this happening to you. Hey it's Matt The Prudent Homebuyer. When

looking for a home, particularly early in your financial life, you want to look for

something that if you ever needed to, would be easy to rent out. Think back to

2008. Housing prices were plummeting, but rental prices in a lot of areas were

staying the same or even increasing. The idea is we want a house that gives us

options when we're ready to leave. If the housing market is booming,

awesome! Sell it. But if the housing market is in the tank, we want the option

to be able to rent that out so we're not stuck. How do we do this? The key is

staying in the rental sweet spot for your area. There's three things I like to

look at. 1. Price Range. When you buy a house, don't out-price the demand for rentals

in your area. For example, in my area I know that I don't want to buy a house

much beyond $225,000 in value or so because once I do, I get out of that

sweet spot that's really easy to rent. And so if my goal is to be highly

rentable with my property, I want to buy somewhere below that amount.

2. Proximity to places where people go. You might love that house in the suburbs but

if you're serious about buying something that's highly rentable, you might

consider that house closer to downtown that's right across from the University

and close to a couple major companies. If you can shorten the commute for your

tenant that's going to give you the advantage every time and make your

property a lot more rentable.

Third. The House Itself. Never concede on something you don't like about a

property. For example if it's backed up to a freeway and you hate that, don't

justify it saying "oh, I only have to be here for a few years and then I'll rent

it out, so it'll be fine" because if you don't like it, the renter's not gonna

like it either. Stick with characteristics of properties that

people really want in your area. I know a lot of this sounds like common sense but

most people don't buy a home considering whether or not it will be highly

rentable in the future, and this has some consequences. I saw several people go

through 2008 seeing the value of their house decline and then they spent years

and years waiting for that value to creep back up so they could get out of

it. That's a bad spot to be in. Don't let that happen to you. Thank you for

watching. If you enjoyed this, video there's a lot more to come. Please follow

Taylor Saulters: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 10:49.

Taylor Saulters: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

A Georgia police officer has been fired after he drove his squad car into a fleeing suspect during a foot pursuit.

Taylor Saulters was terminated by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department less than 24 hours after the incident when the department's chief reviewed body camera video and determined he violated policy.

"Athens Police Chief Scott Freeman initially placed Saulters on administrative leave, initiated an internal affairs investigation, and requested that the Georgia State Patrol and Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct independent investigations of the incident," the department said Saturday in a press release.

"After reviewing the officers' body camera footage, and all the other facts and circumstances of this case, Chief Scott Freeman terminated the employment of Officer Taylor Saulters.".

The incident occurred on Friday, June 1, about 7:30 p.m.

in Athens, Georgia.

The suspect, Timmy Patmon, was wanted on a non-violent felony drug probation warrant and had fled from Saulters and another officer, Hunter Blackmon.

Patmon suffered "scrapes and bruises," police said, and was charged with violating his probation and obstructing a law enforcement officer, police said in a press release.

It is not clear if Saulters, 23, will be facing criminal charges.

Saulters has not commented about the incident and he has not yet hired an attorney.

Here's what you need to know about Taylor Saulters and the incident:.

You can watch the full bodycam video of the incident above.

According to the press release from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Officer Taylor Saulters was on patrol with Officer Hunter Blackmon about 7:30 p.m.

on June 1 in the area of Vine Street and Nellie B Avenue when Blackmon saw a man, Timmy Patmon, 23, who he "knew to have a felony probation warrant." Records show Patmon was convicted on drug charges in 2017 and a warrant was issued for a probation violation on May 31 of this year.

Police said the officers were trying to confirm the validity of the warrant and tried to make contact with Patmon.

He fled on foot.

Blackmon began to chase Patmon, also on foot, while Saulters tried to "get ahead of Patmon with his patrol car," according to the press release.

"During the course of the foot chase, Saulters attempted to block Patmon's path of escape on two occasions with his patrol car.

During Saulter's first attempt to block Patmon, Saulters struck a curb and flattened his driver's side front tire," police said.

"On Saulter's second attempt to block Patmon's path with his patrol car, and during the maneuvering of the patrol car Patmon impacted the right front quarter panel of Saulters' car as Saulters was attempting to accelerate past Patmon.".

The body camera video shows Saulters getting out of the car as Blackmon starts to handcuff Patmon, who was knocked down.

A bystander yells, "You didn't have to hit that man," as a crowd gathers around the scene.

Saulters then joins Blackmon in trying to handcuff Patmon and tells him, "Give us your hands know or you're going to get Tazed." Patmon is then handcuffed.

The angry crowd can be heard yelling at Saulters and Blackmon as Saulters calls for EMS for Patmon.

"Officers requested an ambulance to evaluate Patmon, and he was then transported to a hospital for evaluation.

After being medically evaluated and cleared for arrest and booking, Patmon was turned over to the Clarke County jail," the ACCPD press release stated.

"The extent of Patmon's injuries were scrapes and bruises.

Patmon is charged with violating his probation and obstructing a law enforcement officer.".

When Patmon told Saulters he was injured, Saulters asked him if it was from when he hit the ground.

Patmon replied, "You know, man.

You hit me with your car!" Saulters can be heard responding, "Oh, I know, I know what I did.

Why'd you run?" Patmon responds, "I don't know, I just did.".

At another point in the video, Saulters tells a plainclothes officer who arrived at the scene, "I got him with my car.

That's what they're yelling about.".

Later in the video, Saulters drives his car, which was damaged during the pursuit, to a parking lot, where he met with other officers.

He can be heard telling them, "I didn't hit them with the car, I blocked him with the car," despite the video clearly showing he struck Patmon with the car, sending onto the hood and then to the ground.

"He hit the ground, but…" Another officer agrees, saying, "you didn't hit him." Saulters then tells the officers, "He was running this way and I just came this way and he ran into the hood of my car and bounced off.".

Another officer tells Saulters, "As long as you didn't make some sort of overt movement to strike him, you're going to be fine.

" Saulters told him, "I did it to try to go in front of him.

Less than 24 hours later, the department issued a press release stating that Saulters had been fired after a review by Police Chief Scott Freeman.

The chief has not detailed what policies and procedures he believes were not followed by Saulters.

A department spokesperson told WSB-TV they do not believe Saulters was intentionally trying to hit Patmon, but said he was negligent in his actions.

"I thought my son was dead," Tammy LaShay Brown Patmon, Timmy Patmon's mother, told the news station.

His brother said, ""They were chasing him from behind.

They didn't have to run him over." Timmy's mother added, "His arms and stuff are all marked up … and he's limping when he walk.

Whoever hit my son should be punished for it.

It's wrong.

It's police brutality, it sure is.

It's wrong.".

Police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez told the Athens Banner-Herald, "This was not the kind of conduct we would expect from an Athens-Clarke County police officer.

His Father Is a Captain Who Leads the Department's Investigations Division & Taylor Joined the Force in June 2017 After Graduating From the Police Academy.

Taylor Saulters graduated from the police academy and began working on patrol for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in June 2017.

The police department tweeted a photo of Saulters and other officers during their swearing-in ceremony.

He was pictured in one photo with his father, Athens-Clarke County Police Captain Jerry Saulters.

The elder Saulters is the commander of the police department's Criminal Investigations Division.

He has been an officer with the department since 1998 and was promoted to captain in 2016, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

Saulters' family says he was still in a probationary period with the police department, which made it easier for the police chief to fire him for violating the procedures.

His disciplinary record and other personnel file details have not yet been released.

LD@home - Building Math Skills at Home - Duration: 11:30.

>> Children with learning disabilities

can succeed in math.

Parents play a key role in their child's success

by partnering with the school

and fostering mathematical thinking at home.

>> Do you have a six? >> Nope. Go fish.

>> In this video, you'll learn how learning disabilities

affect math,

how to partner with the school to best support your child,

and which resources are available

to build math skills at home.

First and foremost, parents should take the time

to understand their child's learning profile,

their strengths and their challenges.

>> So it's important for parents to understand

that their children,

if they have a learning disability,

have average to above-average thinking

and reasoning potential. They have potential.

They have the ability to think and reason and learn.

But along with that potential,

there's one or more areas of processing

that impacts their ability to show

that potential academically,

whether it's reading, writing or math.

It could impact on number sense, numeration, operations,

geometry, algebra,

visual spatialization, or word problems, math word problems.

>> Adopting a positive attitude and mind set towards math

is essential to supporting children

in building math skills.

>> There's a stigma that has gone with math.

And a lot of people, based on the experiences

that they've had in the past,

have either a positive or a negative growth mind

set around what math means, and what it looks like.

And we really are trying to break down some of those pieces

to help families recognize

that the skills that they're learning in math,

it's not just about the right answer.

It's about the collaboration that occurs,

the ongoing problem solving,

the ability to empower students to make decisions around

what tools are going to help them come to a solution.

It's about them being able to reason and prove and strategize.

And it's about them being able to connect to things

that they've known in the past, and then grow from that.

>> There's research that's been done by Carol Dweck,

looking at the difference between a growth

and a fixed mind set for students with a fixed mind

set who believe that their ability and their potential

is based on specific marks and results.

And they don't feel that they can change

or improve or grow from time to time.

Whereas a growth mind set,

a focus on strategies that are used,

and how you've learned makes a significant difference

in our own ability to improve how we do.

So with a growth mind set,

we're supporting our students to recognize

that they have potential.

>> Some parents may feel they're not equipped

to support their child in math,

due to their own math anxiety.

But with a growth mind set,

parents can encourage their child

to persevere through challenging math problems,

and build math skills applicable to their everyday lives.

>> So we recognize that when it comes to mathematics,

anxiety is definitely real.

Based on some of our families' experiences,

we recognize that there are some people who come with mind sets

that,

you know what, I was not born with the math gene,

so it's okay.

Mommy can't do this, so it's okay, don't worry about it.

And we actually want to break that.

Everybody is born with a math brain.

We all learn differently,

and the strategies that we learn may look different.

But when we think about problem solving,

we're coming into a workforce

where that is one of the key skills

that the workforce is saying, you know what,

your graduates need to be able to problem solve.

They need to be able to come to a challenge

and be able to collaborate and work through.

We need creativity. We need critical thinking.

And in mathematics,

those are skills that are built every day within the classroom.

So I think one of the first things is, as parents,

open up your mind to recognize that, yes,

you maybe have had some challenges in the past.

But today, and moving forward,

math is going to have a new way of speaking.

>> That doesn't mean that we can't talk to kids

about problem solving,

that we can't introduce them to financial literacy,

that when we're out in the park, we can't have conversations.

I think sometimes we naturally do that more with literacy

as parents,

but really, we can use the same type of ideas with math.

>> There are several ways parents can support their child

in building math skills at home.

Teachers are often a great starting point

in identifying strategies and resources.

>> Learning at home should be engaging.

It should be based in real-world,

applicable things

that you need help with.

When you are talking to a child who loves airplanes,

you need to talk about the distance, the speed.

Use directional words, such as left, right, north, east

– because that is a unit in math.

It is really important that parents be aware

of what's being taught in the classroom at that moment,

and try to align the activities

they're doing outside of school with that unit.

So for example, if a classroom is working on number sense

and numeracy, addition and subtraction,

there are so many games

that can support addition and subtraction,

even one as common as Monopoly.

You're going to have to play with the money.

You're going to have to add up how much money you have.

You can have conversations about easy mental math

strategies to add and subtract,

while having fun with your family.

>> So connect with your homeroom teacher,

your child's homeroom teacher.

Talk about what sort of activities are happening,

what sort of learning progress.

How can we support at home?

Attend the school council meetings.

Come out, because at those times,

it's an opportunity to really share

about what's happening in the school.

What are some of the areas of focus?

And specifically with mathematics,

what are some of the trends and patterns

that we're seeing with our students,

and what are some of the things that the school's doing?

>> One example of a way parents

can engage with their child's school

is through family Math Nights,

which create a great opportunity to collaborate with teachers

and learn about new math resources to try at home.

>> A number of schools across the district

are exploring what a family Math Night could look like.

And by family Math Night, it's an opportunity to bring students

and families together to do math,

and also giving parents supports of what resources are out there,

what online tools are available,

what Ministry of Education resources are out there.

There's activities based in the division,

so primary, junior and intermediate.

And students with their families move around

and they collect little tokens.

There's an opportunity for parents to connect together,

and to see math as fun.

>> Family Math Nights are organized

by administrators in schools,

so if you're interested, I would encourage you

to have a conversation with your child administrator.

Say, how can I support having a family Math Night?

What can I do to help?

>> There are also free online resources children

can access at home to support them in math.

>> At home, there's a number of great resources

that you can access as a family

in supporting your child in mathematics.

There are a number of online tools, so www.mathies.ca.

There's also, for grades seven to ten,

it's called Homework Help,

where there's an online live math tutor

that can support children in their homework.

>> One of the tools that we've been looking at

is called EquatIO. It's produced by a company called TextHelp.

It is a web-based program

that students access through Google Chrome.

And it supports students through handwriting,

prediction, speech detect,

as well as providing a math space

where teachers can work with students

in a collaborative manner on math.

And it also allows them to take that math home and review it.

>> While finding the right resources to use at home

is incredibly helpful, parents' encouraging words

can also be empowering for a child

with learning disabilities.

>> The first step definitely comes from the parents.

Parents have to encourage their kids

to raise their hand, pretty much.

Parents have to be the ones to say,

"It's okay that you don't know.

And the only way that you're going to know is if you ask."

And the second part of that is for kids to really understand

and grasp that idea of, it's okay that I don't know.

>> There's a fine line for a lot of parents

who have a child who has any kind of diagnosis.

I think that a lot of parents immediately struggle with,

I want to protect them. I want to keep them safe.

I don't want them to live with a stigma.

You know, I don't want them to be hurt by this.

There's also a piece where parents will say the school

might expect too much, so they don't --

it comes from a place of fearing failure.

They don't want their child to experience

this blow all the time,

so they want to lessen the load for their child.

I think you need to make sure that you expect the best

and the most from your child.

And I think that parents shouldn't let the diagnosis

limit their expectations for their child.

>> With the right tools and supports,

children with learning disabilities can gain confidence

and learn to advocate for themselves.

>> If you're a parent whose child has just been diagnosed

with a learning disability, don't panic.

It's okay. What you can do to support your child at home

is pump up their confidence.

Talk about what they're great at, and be honest.

You know, we've got some areas that we need to work on,

but doesn't everybody?

And know that different is good. If everybody was the same,

we would never have any progress forward.

>> Middle school to me, as a parent is that period,

that transition period, where you really want your child

to know

that they're going to need to be speaking up for themselves.

They're going to need to be paying attention

to what's working and what's not working,

and that I'm here to support

and I'm here to guide and be a mentor.

But this is your journey.

>> It was really important that I advocated for myself.

I could take those skills that I'd learned in younger grades,

and saying if I'm not understanding the basic math,

how can I learn it?

I care enough to want to succeed

that I wasn't just going to stop because it seemed impossible.

>> Math offers boundless opportunities

and necessary skills for children

to lead successful lives.

With a growth mind set,

the right resources and the collaborative partnership

between parents and school, any child can learn and do math.

What Coaching Can Do For You - Duration: 3:47.

Today what I want to share with you is: what I believe coaching can do for you.

And I'm going to use one of my absolutely favorite quotes by Maya Angelou she

said, "Do the best that you can until you know better.

Then when you know better, do better."

And the reason why I love this quote so much is because I think that's really what

the coaching process facilitates, in other

words, it facilitates "A-HA" moments.

It allows us to have that knowledge about ourselves - to see ourselves more clearly -

so that then we can make better decisions

about our behavior - so then we do better.

So think about it this way: it's like peeling back the layers of an onion because I

think that there are so many messages that we learn about ourselves that

then translate into the habits that we develop.

And some of those habits are not serving the life that we want to create or the best

version of who we want to be.

So the onus is on developing

the habits to increase our self awareness so then we can have - the light bulb goes

on and we are like- why did I ever think that was the best way

doing things?

I should be doing it this way.

Think about it this way, have you ever been in a new job or a new position and in the

beginning everything is so overwhelming then a few

months down the line - it's a no-brainer - you could do your job in your sleep

and you wonder you why it was so hard to begin with!

Well, it's kind of similar like that...

I'll share with you a story that happened to me

where I was able to have that A-ha moment about one of my habits that was clearly

not serving me.

This was - I was leading a workshop with a group of participants and

one of the participants would see me after class every time collecting my things

and struggling to get to my car because I was carrying so much stuff and every

single time he would ask me,

"Do you need help?"

And every single time I would turn him down.

And one time he called me out on it.

He said, "You know Caro, I see you struggling all time.

And I ask you if you need help and you turn me down."

And he said, "What is about you that has a hard time

accepting help?"

And that moment - I'm telling you - it stayed with me and it struck me.

Because I didn't know the answer to that.

And I didn't even see that about myself.

I didn't even realize that I was doing it and that's what I mean about

- we have behaviors that we do on autopilot.

And when he said that to me it was like... hmm..

And as a coach, then obviously the next place that I go to is: how else might that

be showing up in my life? Where else might I be doing this?

Then I started realizing I also do this at home, I do this with my

friends I do this with my family..

I do this a lot.

Why am I not letting people help me?

And that was a huge A-ha moment for me where I started seeing that - yeah,

once upon a time I learned that I needed to be self-reliant and independent, so I stopped

asking for help and felt - no, it's not a good idea to rely on other people - and clearly

that's not working for me, right!?

So that's what coaching can do

allows us to have those A-ha moments so we take a look out ourselves more clearly

and develop the habits that will serve us.

So my question to you is: Right now, if you're just curious about your

life, without judgment, what are some of the habits that you might have that are

not supporting the life that you want to create for yourself?

Or the best version of who you are?

And I want you to share those in the comments below.
