Hi! It's Heather from Thicketworks...and today I want to share with you my
process for making do-it-yourself faux gilded leather. This technique is
inspired by the amazing gilded and embossed leather panels created by
master leather working shops in centuries past. It's easy to see from
these examples why this material was so sought-after. The process that I'll demo
today results in a surface that's reminiscent of these gilded leathers of
the past - I can't pretend that it's anywhere near as beautiful, but it's a
step in the right direction! The process begins with the creation of
do-it-yourself Metallic Cardstock - and then we add layers of translucent
glazing by mixing together Triple Thick and Distress Ink Reinkers. To complete
this process you'll want to begin by creating your DIY metallic card stock
and then emboss the card stock. You'll then glaze the embossed cardstock with
your Triple Thick Gloss Glaze tinted with Distress Ink Reinkers, and finally
you can seal the entire panel with clear embossing powder for a long-lasting
finish. For these panels I began with a gold tinted foil. After embossing the
card stock a weathering layer was added using Triple Thick Gloss Glaze tinted
with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Once the weathering layer had cured the glaze was
mixed using Triple Thick tinted with Salty Ocean Distress Ink.
This glaze was then applied around each of the cruciform elements and filling in
completely the tiny crosses. This is definitely a time intensive process - but
it's also quite contemplative and very enjoyable, so if you allow yourself an
hour or two at your workbench to methodically transform your embossed
metallic cardstock you'll find that it's an incredibly satisfying pastime. When
the first layer of blue glaze has dried completely you may decide to intensify
that pigment by adding a second layer. It's important to use a glossy,
translucent medium for this process. A glossy translucent finish is necessary
to allow the metallic gleam of the foil to shine through the pigments and it's
that layering effect over the metallic substrate that gives this the feel of
ancient gilded leather. Mowed Lawn Distress Ink has been used to create the
green glaze that you see being applied here in the circular forms surrounding
each of the crosses. Once completed, this panel will be set aside to cure and
we'll begin working on the next panel. Vintage Photo Distress Ink has been used
to deepen the gold tones on the outer area that frames this beautiful
medallion... and bright blue created with Salty Ocean
Distress Ink and Triple Thick Gloss Glaze is being applied in the background that
surrounds these floral and butterfly motifs. Using a fine detail brush is
important for this work as you can see: it's very easy to go "over the lines" and
begin to tint the upper surface when that's not what you had intended... but you
can easily wipe away any of those mistakes with the tip of your finger.
Just allow the colors to dry between applications. Here, I'm adding a second
layer of the bright blue to intensify that pigment. This shade of blue is
almost cobalt and very reminiscent of late medieval polychrome work. Next, we'll
mix a beautiful crimson glaze using Festive Berries Distress Ink. Bright
clear crimson was a hallmark of medieval manuscripts and also of the polychrome
gilded leather work produced in that time. Now, I'm certainly not as meticulous
as a monk in a monastery creating an illuminated manuscript - but I think that
the approximation of the effect is very pleasing to the eye. Next, I'll be using
this same bright crimson to call out particular details on the raised motifs
in the center medallion area. As a finishing touch, I'll be mixing up
some clear green using Mowed Lawn Distress Ink - and with this we'll color
all the leaf forms and vine shapes that run throughout this beautiful embossed
panel. This technique is incredibly simple, but it does require a great deal
of concentration and an investment in time. That's an investment well worth
making in my humble opinion! The finished result pleases me on many levels: I'm
always searching for ways to evoke historical and aged and beautiful
surfaces from our past. Thank you so much for hanging out with me today - I look
forward to seeing you again. Until next time...Bye!
