A home invasion is when people force themselves into your house with the intention of inflicting
damage on you and everyone you love.
Whereas the average career criminal tries not to be seen and only wants your possessions,
a home invader only wants you and nothing else.
But if you follow these steps, maybe you won't become their next victim.
Either way, I sincerely hope you will never have to use this guide.
And remember, you should always check your state's local laws before trying to defend
yourself.
11.
Don't Think It Won't Happen to You
Maybe you live in a nice neighborhood and think that a home invasion can't possibly
happen to you.
Really this kind of thinking is exactly what leaves you unprepared for the moment it actually
happens.
Even if you live in an area with a lot of police who will come quickly, only 38% of
the victims manage to get to a phone while being menaced by a home invader.
The rest didn't make it in time.
This means you definitely need to have a plan beforehand if you want to survive.
10.
Don't Open the Door
A lot of home invasions begin with a deceitful introduction that's meant to catch you off-guard.
If you hear a knock and aren't expecting anyone, don't open the door right away.
Sometimes your invader will disguise themselves as a deliveryman or a utility worker and come
to your house in the middle of the day.
Don't fall for this trap.
Look for a utility truck or delivery vehicle first before opening.
Even if you see a police officer at your door, try to look for a patrol car first.
Sometimes these sickos will try to gain entry by acting like they need immediate medical
assistance fast.
They may say that they need your help for a million different reasons, from a collision
to a fire, but unless you can see what they are describing from your window, don't open
the door.
Think about it: if what they are saying didn't happen within eyesight, then why would they
go all the way to your house for help instead of finding someone who lived closer?
It just doesn't make sense.
If you can't verify who they are or what they are telling you, then tell them through
the closed door that you are contacting the police for them, and then call the police
and wait.
This is often the easiest way to survive a home invasion attempt.
9.
Glowstick Housekeys on the Second Floor
Let's say you are stuck on the second floor when the home invasion happens.
You've already called the police and now you are waiting for them while a psycho is
trying to find you downstairs.
If they got in through the window for example, then your front door will still be locked
when police arrive.
That's why you should keep a house key and a glowstick on a chain on the second floor
of your house.
Just quickly throw it out a window as soon as the police arrive.
They'll see it and let themselves in.
8.
Be On-guard Outside of Your Home
A lot of home invasions start outside of the property, so be alert whenever you're in
the driveway or backyard, or even when you have the garage door open.
Strangers with bad intentions will often approach you from the street as you're washing your
car or maybe working on your bike.
They may look normal but are in fact far from it.
The best home protection in the world doesn't matter if you get caught outside, so watch
out.
Some invaders will even case your house out for a long time to get a feel for your daily
routines.
They'll hide in the bushes or somewhere close by when they know you're be leaving
soon and ambush you.
These home invasions are hard to defend from, but motion detecting devices can let you know
when someone may be lurking around outside.
I'm not suggesting that you should be constantly paranoid, but you should definitely be aware
of your surroundings.
I know it sounds kind of strange, but imagining yourself being kidnapped in different ways
from time to time will actually help you naturally develop situational awareness and prevent
it from happening.
7.
Get Out, Fast
If you are all alone and don't have anyone who needs your protection, then you should
run out of the house as fast as you can.
Be sure to choose an exit that's as far away from the source of the break-in as possible.
If you hear the front door get kicked in, for example, then run out the back and vice
versa.
Once you get out of the house, you should scream as loud as you can while running down
the street.
Try to attract as much attention from the neighborhood as possible.
Even if you live in a rural area without many other houses, yell as loud as you can while
getting away.
Somebody might be driving by who can help.
6.
Make a Code Word
If you are in the house with other people when a home invasion happens, don't team
up and try and fight, just try and get out of there.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by making up a code word so that everyone knows to leave.
It doesn't have to be a fancy phrase – simply shouting something like "escape" really
loudly should be enough.
Having a code word cuts down on the confusion and gives everyone as much time to escape
as possible when seconds matter the most.
5.
Have a Safe Room
Alternatively, people living in larger houses or high rise apartments may want to designate
a safe room.
This room should be heavily fortified and impossible to break into.
There should be a landline telephone to call the police, at least one flashlight in case
the power is cut, security cameras to watch the intruders if possible, and plenty of fire
arms just in case.
Whatever you decide to do, don't be a hero and leave the safe room for any reason.
Just wait for the police.
4.
Fire arms
Sometimes running away is not an option, but even if you have a piece, there are still
plenty of mistakes that can end your life.
You may be feeling brave, angry and ready to get this over with, but you still shouldn't
open the door and confront them with a firearm if you know what's best.
When you open the door, you are automatically within grabbing distance.
You might not be able to discharge your fire arm before they're already on you.
Instead of going to the door, try to determine where they are breaking in and find some cover
on the opposite side of the room.
If they are kicking in the door, then duck behind a piece of furniture and aim.
You want to take them out as soon as they are within clear range.
The best strategy is to duck down the opposite corner and wait for them to come in.
This way, you will be the last thing that the invader sees.
They won't have much time to react and you'll have plenty of time to assess them.
If you've already contacted the authorities, then this strategy will also give you time
to see if the person entering is a bad guy or a police officer who is trying to help.
If you keep your firearm in a safe, make sure it has regular rubber buttons on the locks
and avoid biometrics.
Fingerprint scanners are still relatively new and are known to fail if your hand is
sweaty.
3.
Guard Dogs
Having a large well-trained dog is an invaluable deterrent for home invasions.
Guard dogs are fearless and will not hesitate to protect their master with their very lives
if necessary.
Having a dog who will subdue an intruder could give you the time you need to get out of your
home, call the police or otherwise defend yourself.
Even dogs who are not trained will still naturally bark at the first sign of a home invasion,
which will hopefully give you enough time to escape.
Try to take your dog with you if you can, but don't try to run through your house
or put yourself in great danger to save them.
It may sound harsh, but if you get caught trying to find your animal, then neither you
or your pets will survive.
2.
Keep Your Social Media Private
It's really bothersome to think about a stranger finding you online and developing
an obsession, but this happens a lot and can be easily prevented.
If you are constantly checking into places, describing your routine, and posting pictures
of your house (especially the inside), then you could be giving sensitive information
to the wrong people.
Similarly, making suggestive photographs of yourself public for a stalker to obsess over
is just inviting trouble.
