Waching daily Aug 26 2018

Human babies are kind of pathetic.

We can't run from predators, feed ourselves,

or even lift up our own heads.

But not all newborns are totally helpless.

After all, it's a treacherous world out there,

and some babies must go to extremes to survive.

Take barnacle geese.

They lay their eggs 120 meters up

the side of the cliff, away from predators.

That's the same height as a 36-story building.

But there's no food for the chicks to eat up there.

So when they're a few days old, still incapable of flight,

they leap off the cliff.

Thousands are injured or killed on impact.

But the lightest, fluffiest chicks survive by floating down

and landing on their soft stomachs.

Baby marine iguanas also have it rough.

They don't have to leap off a cliff,

they just have to outrun swarms of hungry snakes.

Mothers lay their eggs in underground burrows

for protection,

but they don't stick around after laying the eggs.

By the time the babies hatch up to four months later,

the Galapagos racer snakes have gathered for a feast.

So the hatchlings have two options.

Stay put and starve or make a run for it.

The snakes are attracted to movement,

so the second the iguanas take off, snakes give chase,

and only the quickest survive.

While iguana hatchlings must be fleet of foot,

greater guinea pigs are speedy in a different way.

Pups can have babies of their own,

just one month after birth.

That's like humans giving birth at 11 months old.

And unlike other rodents,

the pups are born with furry coats, open eyes,

and can walk on their first day.

They're pretty much just mini-adults.

Disturbing, right?

Just wait till you hear about braconid wasps.

Their babies are extreme predators

from the moment they hatch.

Adults hijack a caterpillar

and lay over 100 eggs underneath its skin.

Once hatched, the larvae feed on

the caterpillar's internal organs,

and once it's on the brink of death,

the larvae chew their way out, spin cocoons,

and emerge as fully formed adults.

Ready to have deadly babies of their own.

Speaking of which, sand tiger sharks eat

their own siblings before they're even born.

You see, mom has many suitors,

and they all fertilize her eggs at different times.

So the eggs that are fertilized early on develop sooner

in the womb before the rest,

and once they're big enough,

they eat their less developed siblings.

And you thought you had annoying siblings.

BPD and Self Harm ft. Recovery Mum (Signs and Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder) - Duration: 11:21.

today I have a very special guest here to talk to everybody about borderline

personality disorder as well as self-harm what is up everybody this is

Chris from the rewired soul where we talk about the problem but focus on the

solution and if you're new to my channel my channel is all about mental health

not only do I like to help all of you with your mental health and improving it

but I also like to spread a message of hope and increase awareness and decrease

the stigma so if you're into that kind of stuff make sure you subscribe and

bring that notification bell but something that I try to do is build this

kind of community or become more of a part of the community here on YouTube

with other youtubers who are talking about mental health like there's so many

people out there that you need to check out who are helping out with mental

health and also educating people on stuff and today my very special guest is

Serena she is from across the pond over the UK and she has a channel over here

called recovery mom okay so Serena has an awesome channel I found

it a few months ago and not only do my personality disorder and self-harm but

also addiction anxiety and all sort of stuff Serena I'm Kris thank you for

having me on your channel hi guys my name is Serena and my youtube channel

is recovery mom a little bit about me I've been diagnosed with borderline

personality disorder depression (BPD) anxiety bulimia of as a self Harmer I used to

attempt suicide multiple times drug addiction alcoholism

prenatal and postnatal depression I have four children so I have literally got so

much personal experience in this but all those problems are no longer problems

for me today and today I'm going to talk to you about self-harm now drug

addiction overspending eating disorders they are all forms of self-harm but for

the faith sake of this video I'm talking about ns

eyes which stands for non-suicidal self-injury there are so many reasons

why people self-harm and they can vary greatly some people might have

experienced trauma as a child and grow up feeling they deserve to be punished

and self-harm for that reason there are those of us that suffer such intense

emotions we just don't know how to cope with them and we self-harm we have

people that don't experience intense emotions in fact they're the opposite

they experience no emotions they own emotionally not and so they self-harm to

feel we can sell pharma for and get other people within self harm if we're

angry ourselves we can self-harm because we just don't know how to communicate

how we feel to other people and it's like help me so they're all like just

some of the reasons why we self-harm when it comes to self harming there is a

kind of scale I suppose and at one end on someone self harms they might need

urgent medical attention immediately at the other end you might have someone

that pulls out individual hairs either way wherever you are on the scale

self-harm is self-harm and is not coping not a healthy coping mechanism but for

us it is a way of coping so what is happening in our brain when we do this

why is the cycle so hard to break if for example you're feeling really really sad

and you go and eat a load of junk food maybe chocolate chocolate mmm and you

feel better in your brain a little neural pathway will grow so next time

you feel sad you're more likely to just go and eat chocolate and it'll make you

feel better and that neural pathway will grow stronger and every time you use

eating chocolate as coping mechanism for the sadness your neural pathway gets

stronger and stronger and stronger until eventually you don't even have to think

about what I do you just do it you feel sad to each other

that's it and this is what happens in our brain when we self-harm

we feel or don't feel a certain way and we self-harm and that neural pathway

grows so next time we're more likely to do it the other problem is that self

harming releases endorphins endorphins are our body's own natural pain relief

it's like morphine it's addictive so not only are we growing a strong neural

pathway so in the end we don't even think about it we just do it's addictive

in the nature that it's giving off an addictive chemical meaning we're more

likely to do it again and again it's harder to break that cycle but it is

possible to break that cycle now there are a number of things you can do I have

a book coming out in October the big book on borderline personality disorder

and I've got individual chapters on the trace and one of the traits is self-harm

so there's a whole chapter on that and I've got a lot of device in there but

I'll try and pull it down scale it down for this video one of the things is

distracting now you can distract in various ways one is self soothing and

that's do something nice have a nice warm bath decent relaxing music throwing

a friend stroke a pet cuddly teddy going to sleep just soon with yourself another

way of distracting is by releasing a burst of energy and doing something

really like physical exercise punch a punch back scream into a pillow go for a

run because this doing this exercise releases endorphins so we still get that

endorphin kick here but in a far healthier way than if we were self

harming other things you can do is make your house safe if you are someone that

cuts all that just clear everything away so next time you have that

urghhh you haven't easily got anything around you because this buys you time

what also buys your time is five minute rule when you have that urge just say to

yourself I'm not self harming for five minutes and because that's doable

five minutes is doable if you say I'm not so far me it just seems unrealistic

and you're not likely to take your advice if you say I'm not gonna

self-harm for five minutes and you hold it for five minutes

hopefully that buys you enough time for that urge to pass so one of the best

things that I have done is create something called a crisis box and it's

for when we're in a crisis because when we're in a crisis we're far more likely

to act impulsively or self-harm so a crisis box is of your own making you can

put as much effort into it as you want just get like a shoebox or a bigger box

if you need a bigger and put anything in there that and you could use and get

hold of quickly that might help you when you have the urge to self-harm it might

be a mindfulness coloring book and some pencils it might be a stress ball it

might be a CD of your favorite music it might be a DVD or for a funny film

literally it can be absolutely anything there are so many things you can put

into that box and the great thing is once you've got it there

next time you have that urge and the box is easily accessible you can just grab

it down and use something and it will buy you some time

please don't feel ashamed of yourself harming you can speak to a medical

profession you can professional you can ask for help you do not have to suffer

in silence and please know that there is a way out

I the last time I self-harmed was in 2014 and I actually have never even had

the urge sense so it's possible if I can do it any of you can do it say thank you

so much for watching don't forget to subscribe to my channel

thank you all right I hope you all loved that video as much as I did like I loved

one of the things that I loved those of you who have been around for a while you

know that I'm a big neuroscience nerd I loved how Sarina talked about how you

train your neural pathway for certain habits right and she uses you know the

example with chocolate but it can also be for self-harm this also is what

happens with addiction when we have specific triggers and we go to certain

habits it gets wired into our brain that's one of the reasons why this

channel's name the rewired soul because you can sort to rewire these various

habit loops so I love how she explained that and talked about it and also talked

about endorphins as well as other ways that you can get them so that's really

really fascinating stuff and I hope you all enjoyed that video but please please

please like something that I'm looking forward to is her book that's coming out

in October I need to hit her up and see if I can like check it out so I can do a

review of it on my channel maybe I'll even do an interview with her and talk

about some stuff in the book but in the description down below will be a link to

our book so you can pre-order it and get it in October I know I'm looking forward

to it so make sure that you check it out but

also like Serena talked about towards the end of the video like there's a lot

of different things that you can do to help yourself and recover but if you

have more deep-seated stuff and you need to talk to somebody about it like make

sure you check out the description below because I have a link to better help

online affordable therapy and you will work with a licensed therapist and start

working through some of this stuff all right so there'll be a bunch of

resources down below make sure you head over to Serena's channel recovery mom

like she covers a wide range of stuff not just self harm and not just BPD like

a ton of stuff over on her channel and she's also a mother too so any of you

parents out there like there's a lot of stuff about being a parent who struggles

with mental illness so make sure that you go over there subscribe to her show

us some love and also subscribe because pretty soon here I will be posting a

ghast video over on her channel alright but anyways I want to hear from all of

you down in the comments below what was your biggest takeaway what from this

10 Incredible Benefits of Sea Salt - Duration: 7:53.

10 Incredible Benefits of Sea Salt

Sea salt is a natural product that has become very popular in recent years, not only as an alternative to refined salt but as a useful product to promote good health.

It's made from the evaporation of sea water.

This means that its composition remains intact since it's not subjected to industrial processing.

It stands out for its high content of essential minerals that, after being absorbed, offer a wide variety of benefits for the body.

Of course, it should only be consumed in minimum doses, as excess consumption could have counterproductive effects.

Given that some people still don't know about sea salt's wonderful properties, we want to highlight the best 10.

Discover them below!.

1,Sea salt strengthens the immune system.

The nutrients in sea salt are useful for increasing the immune system's production of antibodies.

When you consume it in small doses, it helps prevent colds, the flu and other viral infections that attack the body.

Do you want to know more? Read: 6 Tricks to Strengthen Your Immune System.

2,It helps to alkalize the body.

This ingredient is a great support for the alkalinization of the body.

This is because it hasn't been exposed to high temperatures.

Its nutritional properties heaven't been reduced, either.

Moreover, its essential minerals contribute to regulating blood pH, promoting the expulsion of toxins and acidic compounds.

3,Sea salt fights asthma.

Because of its anti-inflammatory and soothing action, this type of salt is a natural solution against respiratory irritation.

It has a slight expectorant effect that helps reduce the production of excess phlegm.

Thus, it prevents the obstruction of the air passages.

In fact, sea salt is very beneficial for patients with asthma, as it alleviates breathing difficulties.

4,It protects cardiovascular health.

Diluting half a teaspoon of sea salt in warm water gives you a natural remedy to control high cholesterol and blood pressure.

Although salt is not recommended for hypertensive people, this variety can be ingested in small doses without presenting any danger.

Its high content of essential minerals contributes to reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes.

5,Sea salt relieves muscle aches.

Sea salt contains high levels of potassium and magnesium, which are two vital minerals for the proper functioning of the muscles.

These compounds help to reduce tension, especially after doing some type of sports activity or after completing high physical demands.

Furthermore, it regulates the levels of electrolytes that tend to become unstable due to the loss of liquids.

6,It fights depression.

Thanks to its properties, this natural ingredient helps maintain the levels of melatonin and serotonin, two chemicals related to the feeling of well-being.

After ingesting sea salt, it prevents the production of cortisol and, therefore, reduces stress and depression.

7,Sea salt promotes digestion.

Because of its contribution of chloride, sea salt helps to produce natural acids to optimize the digestion process of carbohydrates and proteins.

Its absorption increases the presence of digestive enzymes and healthy bacteria that work together to remove waste and store nutrients.

8,It helps you sleep well.

Because of its ability to stimulate the production of melatonin, this ingredient can be of great help to patients with insomnia and sleep disorders.

Mixing sea salt with warm water before bed helps to relax the mind and body.

Thus, it induces a deep and uninterrupted sleep.

In turn, it helps to clean the mucous membranes of the body.

Hence, it reduces the snoring related to the obstruction of the airways.

9,Sea salt optimizes brain functions.

The essential minerals in this ingredient are very beneficial for brain functioning.

As they're absorbed into the body, they improve the information and communication processes of brain cells, which are key to concentration and memory.

10,It prevents premature aging.

This organic product's antioxidant and alkaline effect make it a great support against the premature aging of cells.

This means that sea salt helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases on a physical and mental level when you add it to your diet.

In addition, since it supports detoxification, it's a good supplement for preventing wrinkles and other skin signs of aging.

As you can see, sea salt provides many health benefits compared to refined table salt.

Try to buy it in health food stores and consume in small doses to take advantage of all its properties.

Simon died at 1 a.m.

ET, after being put on life support.

TMZ reported that he had a failing kidney and was also suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia.

In 2004, Simon had received a kidney transplant and his longtime friend, publicist Bill Evans was the donor.

Elaine Joyce married Neil Simon in 1999.

Get to know more about Joyce, the life she shared with Simon, her past loves and her children in our facts below.

Neil Simon Was Married Five Times.

According to TMZ, Neil Simon was married five times.

He was first married to a dancer named Joan Baim, but she died after 20 years of marriage to Simon, passing away from cancer in 1953, as reported by Playbill.

7 Deadly Mistakes Lonely Women Make - Duration: 6:36.

7 Deadly Mistakes Lonely Women Make

There are seven categorical reasons some women have difficulties finding and keeping boyfriends.

These causes have evolutionary and biological roots that divide the sexes in behavioral

proclivities.

I am not saying, "this is what women should do, or have to do to get a man."

What I am saying is, "these are general things that some women tend to do that men tend to

take exception to and why they do."

Here are the seven areas:

The Desperation Mindset

Humans are hunters and gathers, so we value items that are more difficult to acquire.

For the ancients, this meant key survival items (e.g., best food and building materials).

The human brain consolidates and simplifies.

The lessons of hunting and gathering became: difficult = valuable & easy = invaluable,

very much the same way all of the lessons of conflict resolution became, fight-or-flight.

As society grew more complex, the consolidated and simplified hunter/gatherer lesson was

corrupted.

For example, diamond jewelry is expensive, whereas cubit zirconium (CZ) jewelry is cheap.

A CZ has all the qualities that attracted to humans to using diamonds for jewelry.

Likewise, a readily available woman has less appeal.

Men were the hunters, and women were the gatherers.

Hence, men instinctually love hunting, and the male brain thrives on the neurochemical

rewards of capture, i.e., dopamine and serotonin.

Dopamine releases in anticipation of reward, not the actual reward, so the actual qualities

of the woman do not matter as much as hunting her.

Variability also increases dopamine in the brain.

That is why gambling is addictive and why players play around.

Not knowing if you will have a big kill or no kill is irresistible for the brain's

reward system.

Players are not into their conquests; they are into the dopamine derived from whether

or not the quest becomes a conquest.

Men intrinsically mistrust women because religions, especiallyJudeo-Christianity, portray women

as untrustworthy, e.g., Eve, Delilah or Jezebel.

If a woman is easy prey, men instinctively think she will be easy prey for other men.

Thus, an easily acquirable female represents more threat than control, and the brain will

run from that scenario every day, all day long.

I often hear women use the phrase, "land a man."

Men are not marlins or Cessna's; you do not need to land them.

Men will land themselves… you just need to point them towards the runway and make

them circle the tower until they are so low on fuel, they are begging to land.

Besides, you do not want a man that you have to land.

You want a man that thanks, God he has landed you.

Also, some women will lie about who they are and what they like to do to get a boyfriend.

Men deplore that.

It just confirms the "Eve" stereotype.

When they find out who you are, and what you like, they lose respect for you and resent

being deceived.

Not only will he resent you, your self-abandonment will turn into self-resentment, and evolve

in self-neglect, which is the diamond lane to ugly.

Asking Men to Define Your Relationship

Never ask a man to define your relationship, because it is idiotic, annoying and a neon

sign flashing "HOT MESS."

If you have to ask if you are in a relationship, the answer is obviously, no.

Being Too Clingy

All humans fear intimacy.

When another person moves towards you, the brain's default response is to move away

for safety.

Clinginess is invasive, threatening, annoying, suspect and extremely unattractive.

You might as well tattoo "discounted merchandise" on your forehead.

Failure to Stroke the Caveman

Historically men have always protected women.

However, the days when men were men and women were grateful are gone.

Women need condoms, not men for protection.

Most men could not physically protect a woman if they had to.

However, men need to feel like their woman sees them as a big "manly man."

I am a feminist because there can be no free men until women are free.

However, blurred gender roles are one of the prices of the feminism.

Intellectually, most men understand evolving gender roles.

However, intellect is a cortical event, whereas emotions occur in the old brain, where there

is no thinking, just "survive now, and ask questions later."

Fight-or-flight is the default emotional male response to a woman not making him feel big

and strong.

Both of those lead to some woman sitting on a barstool saying, "I'd like a strong

drink of hard liquor and nothing with a man's name."

Note: Making a man feel manly is not the same as assigning him all of the yucky domestic

tasks.

Talking About Other Men

Repeatedly mentioning other men will prevent or destroy a relationship.

That is because society has told us that women are not supposed to think about men other

than their boyfriends, husbands or sons.

Asking a Man How You Look

Why would any woman pose such a question?

Again, if you have to ask, the answer is not good.

Men are as readable as those giant numbers on the special needs phones.

You should never ask men certain types of questions, i.e. ones you do not want to be

answered truthfully.

Scientists have not identified the mechanism, but it is the Y chromosome factor in men.

That is, why would you think that women, who begin their day by making up their faces,

are not the least bit interested in certain truths, such as: whether or not a pair of

jeans makes them look fat.

Only women with body image issues ask those questions.

Then they get upset when some man says, "not to me but the Night Manager at Denny's said

you were creating a fire hazard from the thigh friction", or "are you kidding you're so

skinny you could walk through a harp"—the "Why?"

chromosome.

Besides, if a man does not like what you are wearing, just take it off.

Does Mercury Retrograde Give You Brain Fog? - Duration: 1:01.

Planets orbit around the sun more quickly the closer they are to it.

And so, Mercury orbits around the sun faster than any other planet in our solar system.

In fact, its average orbiting speed is 105,947 mph and takes almost 88 Earth-days to go around

the sun one time.

Compare this to Earth's 67,000 mph and 365 days.

This means that three or four times a year, it actually laps Earth and passes right by

us, and this creates an optical illusion where it appears that it's reversed its direction

and is going back the way it came.

That's really all it is; an illusion.

And so, if you want to blame life problems on Mercury Retrograde, go right ahead, but

know that there is no evidence that anything Mercury does while going around the sun has

any effect on our brains and bodies.

Hanebado Is INTENSE! (or, why it's so fun to watch) - Duration: 5:17.

So, Hanebado, or, the Badminton Play of Ayano Hanesaki, is an anime series produced by Liden

Films and directed by Shinpei Izaki, based on the manga of the same name by Kōsuke Hamada,

about the trials and tribulations faced by the various members of the women's badminton

club of Kitakomachi High School, more specifically those faced by its team captain, Aragaki Nagisa,

a determined athlete with impossibly high standards, and its newest member, Ayano Hanesaki,

a badminton prodigy reluctant to return to the sport.

It's a pretty basic premise, and is one I admittedly was only drawn to for the simple

fact that Badminton was one of the only sports I was interested in growing up, but it's

very quickly hooked me in with just how F&*%IN' HYPE IT IS!

LOOK AT THAT ANIMATION!

LOOK AT THOSE MUSCLES!

LOOK AT THAT SOUL CRUSHING DISAPPOINTMENT!

IT'S JUST LIKE MY CHILDHOOD AW YEAAA-

But seriously, the matches in this show are its biggest draw for me, not just for how great they

look, but also because of the mind games surrounding them.

There's a strong focus on how the characters hone in on and exploit each others' physical

and mental weaknesses to their advantage, how their opponents counter these with their

own sly tactics, and vise versa.

This is often emphasized by their inner monologues to show us the logic and thought processes

that go into each characters' approach to the sport.

The match between Aragaki and the new coach, Tachibana, in the second episode is a great

example of this.

In it, we get to hear both Aragaki's obsessive thoughts straining to keep up with the coach's

pace and the way she beats herself up for not being able to control the match, and Tachibana's

contemplative assessment of Aragaki's playstyle.

This simple trick gives us a better understand of each character and adds a layer of tension

to each match as we hear the characters' thoughts racing, making us feel their desperation

and wondering if they're strategies will be enough for them to win.

This is all heightened by the show's incredible animation and choreography, whose fluidity

makes every move flow faster and hit harder, sometimes brutally so.

As you'd expect from a show about badminton, the level of detail that goes into its badminton

play sweeps you into the tension and uncertainty of every match.

But the drama found in this sport is nothing without the drama of the show's main cast.

I don't want to spoil too much here, but suffice it to say, the character's struggles

centre around not only the conflict between those with 'natural talent' and those

who've had to work hard for their skill, and the frustration that builds between these

groups, but also the idea of those same people pushing themselves beyond their limits to

win in this sport which they've dedicated their lives to, and always falling short of

their goals, and how that affects them, whether the emotional weight of their failure breaks

them, or their refusal to stand down slowly turns them into an a&%$£le, which, not gonna

lie, I'm kinda loving right now.

It highlights the intense emotional strain this dedication puts on a person and the dangers

that can come from it consuming their lives, and while I'm sure the ending of the series

will probably put a positive spin on this theme, about being able to find joy in simply

playing the sport instead of losing your mind trying to win every match, so far this through

line helps the series to work as both an intense sports show and an emotionally raw character drama

Some might even say its, too emotional, over dramatic even, which is a sentiment that I

can't help but agree with.

The series can be quite heavy handed with a lot of things, but especially in how it

tries to make you feel bad for its character, to the point that their struggles and backstories

feel less sympathetic and relatable, and more, sad for the sake of being sad.

Hanesaki's mam abandoning her for losing a badminton game either means she is literally

the worst piece of scum in the world or the writer needed something real strong to justify

Hanesaki's reluctance to join the badminton club.

This tendency to go overboard is also present in the aforementioned inner monologues and

general exposition of the series, as well as in how it specifically characterizes Hanesaki's

skill as being almost supernaturally good, as if she made a deal with the devil or something,

which, honestly would explain a lot . . .

AH, F$%K ME, CALL AN EXORCIST ALREADY!

As well, for as great as the show looks, there's a noticeable inconsistency in style

and quality animation-wise, which, though passable most of the time, can be quite jarring

when you notice it.

And what list of criticisms wouldn't be complete without pointing out the needlessly

overt sexual fanservice passed off as comedy, from high school students wearing uncomfortably

form fitting uniforms to jokes about touching someone without their consent,

because that's funny, right?

Right?

. . . hey, uh, who uh, who're you calling?

(knock knock)

FBI, OPEN UP!

For as much as I enjoy the more over the top aspects of this series, they often work to

the show's detriment as much as they work to its benefit.

However, if like me, you have a fondness for ridiculousness, and can deal with the fanservice,

I think you'll find Hanebado to be a nail bitingly tense experience.

It's filled with amazing animation that compliments and amplifies the intensity of

its action, and whose character drama and earnest emotional honesty add to the strengths of it's story.

It's a series that does everything it can to keep you on the edge of your seat, and

for me, that's what makes it so fun to watch.

And yeah, those are my thoughts.

Tell me what yous think, if yous agree, disagree, what your favourite sports anime is, what

your favourite, well, sport is, etc, and thanks for watching!

Neil Simon's Kids & Family: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 9:01.

Neil Simon's Kids & Family: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Legendary playwright Neil Simon has died at age 91.

The playwright, screenwriter, and author, is known for shows like The Odd Couple, Come Blow Your Horn, and Barefoot in the Park, and has received more combined Oscar and Tony nominations than any other writer.

Simon was born on July 4, 1927, in The Bronx, and raised by Jewish parents, Irving Simon and Mamie Simon.

He has openly admitted that he had a difficult childhood– much of which was owed to his parent's difficult marriage.

Interested in learning more about Neil Simon's family? Read on.

He Was Married Five Times.

Honoree Neil Simon and his wife arrive to the Ninth Annual Mark Twain Prize at the Kennedy Center on October 15, 2006 in Washington, DC.

Simon was married five times.

First to dancer Joan Baim from 1953 to 1973, then to Marsha Mason from 1973 to 1983.

His third wife, Diane Lander, he married twice, and at the time of his death, he was married to Elaine Joyce.

Baim was a Martha Graham dancer, and died of bone cancer at age 41.

Simon was known for using his own life experiences as fuel for his plays, and avid Simon fans may be well aware that Baim's death inspired the 1977 play, Chapter Two.

Interestingly enough, however, Joan (or the character she inspired) never appears onstage.

In an interview with the New York Times, Simon once said, "I knew I'd never write about Joan's death… That's too private a thing, and it was not what I wanted to write about.

Somehow I wanted to be able to talk about her, to tell about her, but I did not want to write a play about somebody dying from a terminal disease.

I'd seen those plays and they're maudlin, and in a way they put people off.

At least I can't deal with that.

I don't want to deal with that.".

Mason, Simon's second wife, was an actress and director.

She was nominated four times for an Oscar for Best Actress, for her work in Cinderella Liberty, The Goodbye Girl, Chapter Two and Only When I Laugh.

He Openly Discussed His Parents Volatile Relationship in Interviews.

Simon's father, Irving, was a fabric salesman.

His mother, Mamie, was a saleswoman at Gimbel's department store.

His parents were known to have a contentious relationship, which is examined in the play Brighton Beach Memoirs, which tells the story of a Jewish American teenager being raised in a troubled family.

Notable Biographies writes, "Simon claimed that writing the play helped him address the problems he had with his own mother.".

In an interview with Lawrence Grobel, Simon is quoted as saying, ""To this day I never really knew what the reason for all the fights and battles were about between the two of them … She'd hate him and be very angry, but he would come back and she would take him back.

He Has Three Children.

Neil Simon fathered three children: Nancy Simon, Bryn Simon, and Ellen Simon.

Nancy Simon was married to Woody Harrelson for one year from 1985 to 1986.

They had been dating for approximately five months before tying the knot.

Despite their famous father, Simon's children have managed to avoid the limelight, and apart from Nancy's one IMDB credit as a production assistant on Chapter Two, they appear to have avoided the entertainment industry, as well.

He Married the Same Woman Twice.

Simon was married to Diane Lander from 1987 to 1988.

They divorced, and were remarried from 1990 to 1998.

When the two met, Lander was a struggling actress and single mother.

While they were together, her daughter, Bryn, was adopted by Simon.

Lander was a private person, and in the couple's pre-nuptial agreement, she insisted that Simon was not allowed to write about her or their relationship in his books, movies, or plays.

He Was Very Close with His Brother Danny.

Simon was very close with his brother, Danny, who served as an inspiration to him.

Danny often said, "There have been more plays written about me than about Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc and Julius Caesar all put together.".

In particular, Danny inspired plays like "Come Blow Your Horn", "The Odd Couple", "Plaza Suite", "Chapter Two", "Brighton Beach Memoirs", and "Broadway Bound.

Speaking to the Washington Post about what it was like watching "Broadway Bound" for the first time in 1986, Danny said, "I was shaking all through it… He's actually portraying me up there more accurately than in any other play.

When I went backstage to meet the boy who's acting me, I still couldn't stop crying.

Manny [Emanual Azenberg, the producer] had me call up Neil right away to tell him how I felt.

You know, I have no recollection of what our conversation was about.

But I've always loved him, and I think he's always loved me.".

Danny Simon worked as a TV writer and comedy teacher.

He passed away in Portland, Oregon, in 2005.

John McCain & Barack Obama: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 12:25.

John McCain & Barack Obama: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

Then-Democratic presidential candidate U.S.

Sen.

Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate U.S.

Sen.

John McCain embrace at a presidential debate in 2008.

Political rivals but friends.

They disagreed fundamentally on myriad issues.

John McCain a Republican, Barack Obama a Democrat but at the core, the two men were more alike than dissimilar some say.

In their hearts, as the two themselves said, they were cut from a similar cloth with love of, and devotion to, family and country first.

Respectful, dignified and often light-hearted with one another they nonetheless did clash.

A cursory review of moments from the 2008 election remind of those battles.

And while they vehemently agreed on much, they agreed to disagree and in the manner of Voltaire, defended the right of one another to hold their viewpoints.

They were friends and patriots.

McCain's favorite book, 'For Whom the Bell Tolls,' tells perhaps even more about the man McCain is than who disillusioned fighter American Robert Jordan was in Ernest Hemingway's classic.

"…it's where I got the phrase 'the world is a wonderful place and well worth fighting for …".

When McCain passed away Saturday afternoon after battling brain cancer, it was reported that McCain requested Obama eulogize him.

Obama's statement on the passing of McCain reads in part that for all the ways they were disparate, they too were very much the same.

"…we shared, for all of our differences, a fidelity to something higher the ideals for which generation of Americans and immigrants a like a fart marched and sacrificed,".

Obama said, "Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did.

But all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own.

At John's best, he showed us what that means.

And for that we are all in his debt.".

On the day before his 2009 inauguration, in a raw-footage AP video with just a few thousands views, Pres.

-elect Barack Obama spoke about McCain, his rival for the presidency.

"I could stand here and list McCain's long list of bi-partisan accomplishments," Obama said and then listed some including pat and campaign finance reform to "risk the ire of his party for the good of his country" , but added what was important to honor about McCain was his "rare & courageous public service" which was not motivated by a "quest for fame or vanity that has driven this man" nor was it politics, he said.

"It is rather a pure and deeply felt love for this country that comes form the painful knowledge of what life is like without it …".

Here's what you need to know about John McCain and Barack Obama:.

McCain & Obama Did Battle in 2008 in Their Fight For the White House & the Gloves Often Came Off.

But in the End, They Treated Each Other With Dignity & Respect.

In a town-hall debate in Nashville, Tennessee, the news of the day was another very bad day on Wall Street.

They sparred over the economy and the way to fix it and debated fiercely on foreign policy.

As election day neared, the campaign rhetoric was cranked up notches but both men, outside of their respective campaign teams, publicly stated that each was grateful to the other for their decency and decorum.

"…he said we can disagree without being disagreeable.

That's true," Obama said of McCain at a rally in Philadelphia.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again, John McCain served his country with honor and he deserves our thanks for that.".

During a Campaign Rally, Days Before the 2008 Election, McCain Did Something Few Candidates Do; he Publicly Disagreed with Supporters & Defended His Rival.

There were boos and grumbles but the man that would not be president, rose at the 11th hour in a contentious campaign to say his supporters were wrong about Obama.

When one supporter said he was afraid of Obama and said he was a cohort of terrorists, McCain shook his head.

"I have to tell you he is a decent person and a person you do not have to be scared as president of the United States." Boos and guffaws from the crowd.

"No, now look, now look …" he tried to correct and calm the crowd.

The next supporter to speak in the town-hall style campaign event said, "I do not trust Obama.

I have read about him.

He's an Arab." Again McCain shook his head.

"No. No ma'am.

No," he said while she was till holding the microphone.

"No? No," she asked. McCain took the mic.

"No ma'am.

He's a decent family man and citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign is about.".

Two weeks after the election, in raw video from CBS News, McCain and then-Pres-elect Obama met in Chicago.

They talked football.

When asked what the two former rivals would talk about, Obama said, "We're going to have a good conversation about how we can work together…" And then said he wanted to "offer thanks to Sen.

McCain for (his) outstanding service" to the nation.

When John McCain Conceded the Election in 2008 to Barack Obama, His Concession Speech Was Described as 'Respectful' & 'Courageous'.

Obama White House photographer Pete Souza has captured the presidency as likely no other has with his years of being a quiet but omnipresent eye witness.

On Instagram Souza can be counted on to subtly (or not so subtly) troll the current president, but he also takes the occasion to share images that are timely and often, relevatory.

In the above photo, he says, "John McCain had lost the Presidency to Barack Obama.

Yet on the eve of the inauguration—January 19, 2009–he greeted the President-elect with open arms before a bi-partisan dinner in Washington.

Respect runs both ways.".

On the night of the election in 2008, McCain gave a concession speech that was noted for its humility.

And, his respect for the winner of the race, his new president.

"Tonight more than any night I hold in my heart nothing but love for this country and for all of its citizens whether they supported me or Sen.

Obama.

I wish godspeed to the man who was my former opponent and will be my president.

And I call on all Americans, as I have throughout this campaign to not despair of our present but to believe always in the promise and greatness of America.".

Obama & McCain Fundamentally Disagreed Politically on a Lot, But They were Close Friends & That Friendship Extended to Family.

McCain was often critical of Obama policy.

But in 2009 said he was confident in the then the-president's decision-making process as it related to Afghanistan.

When asked by a reporter about his talks with Obama, McCain was quick to say he'd spoken to the President "yesterday.".

"We had a good conversation, as we always do" McCain said.

John McCain's Military Awards: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 8:28.

John McCain's Military Awards: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

John McCain graduated from the US Naval Academy at Anapolis in 1958.

He was the third generation in his family to graduate from the academy.

McCain's father, John McCain II, was a four star Navy admiral, and McCain spent most of his childhood on Naval bases.

McCain's paternal grandfather, John McCain I, was also a decorated admiral in the navy.

McCain was known as a "rule breaker" while a student at the Naval Academy, and graduated with low grades.

During the first years of his career in the Navy, McCain was involved in three plane crashes, although none of them caused injury.

The reckless, rule breaking student went on to spend five and a half years as a prisoner of war and was highly decorated for his service.

Here's what you need to know:.

McCain Was Awarded the Silver Star For His 'Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity' While He Was a Prisoner of War.

After McCain's captors in Vietnam figured out that he was the son of a prominent Naval commander, they offered to let him go back home.

But McCain refused to accept preferential treatment.

He cited Article III of the Military Code of Conduct, which calls on members of the military to "accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy." McCain told his captors he would only accept freedom if the other POWs were freed too — something which his captors didn't agree to.

McCain's Silver Star citation credits him with moving the North Vietnamese away from the practice of torture.

The citation reads, "Commander McCain's captors, completely ignoring international agreements, subjected Commander McCain to extreme mental and physical cruelties in an attempt to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes.

Through his resistance to those brutalities, he contributed significantly toward the eventual abandonment of harsh treatment by the North Vietnamese, which was attracting international attention.".

McCain Was Released from North Vietnam in 1973 and Was Awarded two Purple Hearts.

McCain spent five and a half years in North Vietnam, being moved around from one prison to another, and enduring extreme torture.

His arms were broken, and he suffered lasting nerve damage from the years of beating and torture.

After his return to the US, McCain wanted to go back to active duty for the Navy.

But he found that he had lost so much physical strength and flexibility that he was unable to advance.

McCain was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam.

A Purple Heart is awarded to members of the military who are wounded by the enemy.

McCain Was Honored With the Distinguished Flying Cross For His Acts of Heroism.

On October 26, 1967, a McCain was flying a bombing mission over North Vietnam when a missile struck his plane.

He was forced to and forced eject and was knocked him unconscious in the fall.

McCain was then taken as a prisoner of war.

He was held in various prisons in North Vietnam, including the infamous"Hanoi Hilton," where he was beaten, tortured, and denied medical treatment.

McCain also spent years in solitary confinement.

His captors offered to release him when they learned that his father was a high-ranking Naval officer, but McCain insisted that he would not leave unless his fellow POWs were released too.

After his release, McCain was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded to members of the military who perform acts of heroism while participating in a flight.

McCain Was Awarded Three Bronze Stars and Two Legion of Merit Awards.

After his release from Vietnam, McCain was awarded three bronze stars and two legion of merit awards.

The American War Library says that the Bronze Star Medal "is awarded to any person who, after December 6, 1941, while serving in any capacity with the Armed Forces of the United States, distinguishes himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight.

The Legion of Merit medal is awarded for "exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements" according to the US military.

After His Experience in Vietnam, McCain Became an Outspoken Opponent of 'Enhanced Interrogation' Techniques.

McCain experienced beatings and torture while a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

When he entered the Senate, he became an outspoken advocate for the rights of prisoners of war.

In 2005, McCain backed an amendment to forbid "waterboarding," an interrogation technique which simulates the experience of drowning.

McCain also argued that the CIA had an obligation to avoid cruel interrogation practices.

During a campaign stop in 2007, McCain said, "Anyone who knows what waterboarding is could not be unsure.

It is a horrible torture technique used by Pol Pot and being used on Buddhist monks as we speak.

People who have worn the uniform and had the experience know that this is a terrible and odious practice and should never be condoned in the U.S.

We are a better nation than that.".
