hello my beautiful bunnies, Kiki's here! /(^ × ^)\
today you can finally watch the third part of my 'how to draw chibi' tutorial Q v Q
this part was actually the most longed-for - because it's about shading (which can be really tricky sometimes!)
today we're gonna talk about: two shading techniques (cell-shading and soft-shading ► how and when to use them);
few words about my favourite brushes talking about coloring and shading;
and also about adding final touches in photoshop.
I hope you can hang in with me a little longer through this last part
and then you'll be ready to enrich the art-world with your beautiful chibis! ♥
I really believe in you, good luck!! mwah ♡ ( ̄З ̄)
today's part we're gonna start quite unusual, because at the beggining we need to draw a little sun
not only because we will be feeling much happier with our little imaginary friend T v T
but because we wanna know where our light source is
so if the sun is on our left, the right side of the chibi will be much less lighted
that's way we're placing all the shadows on the right side
it can sound a little bit clichéd, but it can be also very helpful at the beginning!
of course we don't have to always draw this little sun; at some point we'll be able to do everything intuitively
but if you just get into digital drawing it will be much easier T v T
before we actually start working on our chibi we should definitely take a look at shading techniques
you could actually have a brush with these two terms ► cell-shading and soft-shading
but maybe you need a better explanation? that's why I'm here!
cell-shading and soft-shading are two most popular techniques in drawing world
let's start with cell-shading:
first I need to draw our basic light and shadow layer
please remember that's this is just a quick preview, that's why the circles are so wonky o 3 o
as you can see I'm not blending any of these colors, I leave the hard edge as it is;
you don't have to make soft transitions between the colors
this technique is really useful if you're making e.g. web-comics
because you don't have to worry about blending everything nicely @ v @ it can safe a lot of time!
besides cartoons you can also see this technique in anime and some animated films
okay, let's go on to soft-shading
as you can probably already tell the main thing is SOFTness :D
the whole process of applying highlights and shadows is the same as in cell-shading
but we want to get rid of any hard edge so we have to blend every color nicely
when we look at human face we can't say 'oh, so here's where one color begins and the other ends'
because the transition of all colors are really smooth and soft - that's the beauty of our faces :D
and that's why this technique is used in realistic drawings/paintings ♥
personally I love mixing these two techniques - it doesn't limit our coloring options and gives the best effect
when we want our edges hard and visible - we choose cell-shading
for more soft and neutral effect - we choose soft-shading
and that's all you need to know! Q v Q
if you weren't sure what these terms actually mean I hope I resolved your doubts ♥
for applying these basic shadows I'm using my brush pen with hard edges
so I leave these shadows unblended whenever its come from the light source (in our case it's the sun)
and I blend all the edges when the shadows come naturally from the shape of the body
e.g. when we shade her arm we know that it isn't flat; it has its own shape
let's say it is a cylinder
so we can say that human body is made out of solids (for simplicity's sake) T v T
so first we should think about these shadows that are major - the soft ones
because I am really bad at explaining this topic I'll leave a tutorial (see the info below) with more sensible advice
now I'm making the blush with the airbrush pen
so I'm airbrushing her cheeks, elbows and knees
so her most... protruding...elements... of the body (?) [you see, I am great at explaining things xD)
I think that it gives our character even more charm ♥
in the previous parts I was talking about multiply and overlay mode
so here I'm making new layer in overlay mode
and with this bright yellow I'm highlighting the most illuminated parts
so in this case the left side of our chibi
[Kiki's mumbling]
and then I'm adding these little dots on all the spots with the blush
if you want to have this constant preview of your drawing (without zooming-out all the time)
we can make this copy of our drawing in new window that will update every time we make new move
just click on 'View' and then 'New'
this extended navigator is really useful, especially with bigger drawings
so we can monitor our work all the time
okay, so now I'm gonna color eyes
but you won't see the whole process now ;; ^ ;;
I want to make the whole tutorial about eyes in the near future because today we don't have that much time
so next time I'll explain all the steps I make coloring those big, sparkly eyes * v *
from picking the best colors to making this shiny effects
and now please enjoy this accelerated process ;; v ;; (okay, it literally looks like one of my speedpaints xD)
if you also feel that this tutorial is ONE BIG ENDLESS guide give this part a thumbs up
because that means that I am just a bad teacher (I warned you!)
but you know what?
I'm gonna teach you anyway! T v T
as always I'm gonna play a little with all the adjustments here
saturation, color, contrast and brightness
and very often the color that I pick at the very beginning
(in this case this pinkish shade in multiply mode)
it changes a lot after I do all these adjustments
talking about hair - recently I really love this technique when you have to paint every hair strand separately OTL
it's really time-consuming and dull but I really like this effect
when you see my speedpaints you can actually think that it takes just few seconds tehee
oh well... it's a LIE! Q v Q
but I think that it's worth our time and when you actually get used to this technique, it isn't that bad ♥
we leave some spots on her hair without shadows to make them look like highlighted
with all the beautiful highlights the hair always shines so nicely @ v @ //pats her hair//
as you can see I always pick a color between pink and purple for my shadows on multiply mode
like before I'm highlighting the brightest edges of her hair with yellow color on overlay mode
making chibis is really funny because you can actually play a little with your highlights
so you can make little dots, stars, hearts, everything you want Q v Q
with these small changes you can really develop you own, unique style ♥
lot of things that I'm saying in this tutorial sound so much better and smarter in my head
I'm really wondering if after, let's say, my tenth tutorial I will be talking less trash
but I don't think so /(・ × ・)\
so if you already bear with me this long you can take it a little bit longer T v T
and in fact, that's all I can teach you about coloring/shading
last but not least, we can still play a little bit with the color of our lineart
and because we have all the lines separately, we can check if e.g. the hair would look better in different color
with bright, colored lineart your chibi really comes to life
and the whole drawing looks a little bit softer and gentle
for final touches I like to use Photoshop
but don't worry! if you don't have PS you can still finish your chibi in SAI
I like to do it here because Photoshop got more options for color adjustments
and in Photoshop I really adore this 'History' window
because you can actually see if your drawing was looking better before the changes
without undoing all your new actions
finally I flatten the whole drawing and I continue working on this one layer
and the last touches are - yes, you're right!
brightness, saturation, contrast and color balance (you can always make your chibis look better, right?) Q v Q
I'm adding the white outline really quick and then the last thing is to add our background
if you like this background you can actually download it from the description box and use it in your next chibi ♥
I'm adding some cute texture and voilà, my chibi is done
last of all I'm checking if everything looks good in the mirror reflection
and we get through to the end of our tutorial 'How to draw chibis' ♥
with this knowledge you are ready to go your own way in your chibi journey //I'm so proud ;; ^ ;;//
I hope after watching this tutorial you would be able to actually see some improvement ♥
thank you so much for being here with me through three long parts (シ_ _)シ
but we made it...
we finished every topic...
we are smarter now...
see you next time Bunnies!! ♥ ♥ ♥
