The brave police officers were seen quickly moving through the ocean in a bid to rescue the 'fully-clothed' woman at Sandbanks, Dorset, on Saturday evening

He said: "The woman was on the telephone and drinking alcohol. "When the conversation ended she got up and walked into the sea fully-clothed - it's shallow for a while and you could see her disappearing into the night
"She was about three quarters of a mile away when the policemen entered the water
" He added: "A couple had just got married and were having pictures taken on the beach at the time

Funny Bits of Business with Props (Top 3) - Duration: 8:04.
Are you a magician, clown, balloon twister, or any other type of children's
performer? Do you do walk-around or strolling gigs? Having a few fun props can
instantly make you fun and funny. We are going to talk about that right now.
[Music}
We are going to talk about three things that you can carry with you to be more fun and
funny; but more than that I am going to give you three principles that you can take
to make any gag more fun. Stick around to the end of the video and I will give you a
bonus idea that will get a laugh every time.
As a performer they pay you to be funny from the second you arrive at the event and
you want to bring joy to everybody you meet. The person who booked you is
looking on nervously hoping that you will be fun; hoping that you will make them look
good for hiring you. You need to be funny and interesting every time.
Magicians, clowns, balloon twisters, (really all kids performers) are expected to do a
little walk around magic. Have you ever noticed that the best magicians usually
have the fewest props? Pop Haydn or David Williamson will be more
entertaining with a deck of cards or a coin than most of us would be with
thousands of dollars worth of props. When you are doing walk around or strolling
gigs--less is better. Remember, you are only interacting with a group for a few
minutes. Doing one amazing trick is so much better than several mediocre tricks.
If magic is not your main talent you can still have some fun amazing self-working
type tricks. If you are a magician doing the strolling gig remember people do not
want a 15-minute mini-show. Groups want to be: left amused, left amazed, and then
left alone. For a strolling magic gig I may have several tricks with me but
there are two tricks that I always carry no matter what else I have. Extreme Burn
were five $1 bills turned into five $20 bills right before their eyes; and an Invisible Deck.
I like these because they allow for lots of interaction. They are fairly quick to
perform and they always get a strong reaction from crowds. Unless I am
specifically hired to do strolling magic, I do the Extreme Burn
and if they are REALLY into it I may do the Invisible Deck and that is all the
magic I do. Always leave them wanting more.
When your gags seem like they are spontaneous
groups always love them more. Here is a Pro-Tip: you can plan ahead to be
spontaneous. Let me explain. The majority of my gigs are either as a pirate or a
clown. As a clown I know that somebody will comment on my clown shoes if we
interact very much. So, I always say when I was a little clown my mommy kept my
baby shoe. Do you want to see it? Okay, I will show you my baby shoe. Here is my
baby shoe. Let the anticipation build when you are going to use a prop to make
a visual joke. This is very important; when you are going to use a prop keep it
covered until a specific reveal. This does two things. First, it draws
everyone's attention and builds anticipation. You do not have to say "look
at this." Because of the group dynamic they will no be able to keep from looking
at it. Second, when everyone sees it at the same
time you get a much bigger laugh. If some of the group sees your gag when you take
it out of your pocket they may chuckle and the rest of the group may smile but
if the whole group sees it at the same time they will all laugh together. Laughing
as a group makes everyone laugh harder. When I am a pirate I know somebody will
ask me about my sword. Kids always want me to take it out. So I say stand back...
and I pull out my sword. I turn around so I can pull out the sword and everybody
can see it at the same time. After this gets a laugh I say, "Oh, you wanted to see
the big sword? Why didn't you say so? Let me get the big sword."
Here is the big sword. For the third time I show them the sword in a safe manner.
It is a real sword even though it is not very sharp so I never take it out all
the way and I never let the kids handle it. But, they are interested and excited so
I talk a little bit about swords and pirates. If I were to do the joke more
than three times the kids would get frustrated. Be sure to watch my video on
the "Comedy Rule of Three" to learn more about that. I have one more fun item to
talk about and then that bonus I told you about. But first, if this video is

The third gag I carry uses the idea of
the comedy topper. Some people call it a tag; others a topper. It is a joke playing
off a previous joke without a new setup. It is kind of like an additional
punchline. Often the second joke gets a much bigger laugh than the first. I take
out a tennis ball and say I am going to make this tennis ball multiply right
before your eyes. And then to make sure that I have everyone's attention
I pause dramatically and say "Behold the miracle of the multiplying tennis ball."
Two times two is four. Four times four is 16. He is multiplying. Get it? Okay, I admit it that
was dumb. Would you like to see something that's a little greater? This is a little
greater. This is a little grater. A few things about what I am doing. First, I do
this after I have already done a real magic trick. Because I have already done
some real magic they are primed to see more and that makes it even funnier.
Second, I tell them what I am about to do with the tennis ball two times and then
do it on three. Once again, the "Comedy Rule of Three."
Third, I keep the grater covered and then reveal it so that everyone sees it at
once. Since it is a pun I simulate the motion
of grating cheese just to make it more obvious. The easier you make it for your
audience the more they will laugh. Finally, the tennis ball is a fun pun that gets a
laugh and a groan; and using the grader as a topper lets me
get another laugh without having to do another setup. The tennis ball and grater
get better laughs together than either one would separately. Before I give you
the bonus tip let's sum this up. Number One: Even if you are not a magician, magic
plays well. And one great trick is better than several average tricks. Number Two:
plan fun things to do with the questions you get. Balloon twisters,
jugglers, face-painters, clowns, (just about anyone working with families) will get
the same questions over and over. Have some fun interactions planned in
response. Your audience will laugh harder and think you are a comedy genius for
being so funny off-the-cuff. No need to tell them you had it planned all along.
Number Three: Toppers or tags will multiply the fun. The laughter builds on
itself if you keep it going with more gags.
When you personalize a gag your audience feels a genuine connection with you. When you
perform for families there will be a child who has lost a tooth in almost
every group. I ask, "What happened to your tooth?" When the child says, "I lost it" I say,
"Okay everybody help me look for the tooth. Where were you standing when you
lost the tooth?" The child will tell you where they lost it or they will say
something like the Tooth Fairy already got it. I reply, "Then why are you making
us all look for it? I have got a toothbrush that will be
perfect for you."

Stop Giving Chances to Somebody Who Keeps Letting You Down - Duration: 3:28.
Are you somebody who keeps giving somebody chances?
If so, then I have a story for you.
Years ago, I had a woman come in who told me that she had practically been supporting
her boyfriend.
The guy had cheated on her multiple times, was an unemployed alcoholic that was constantly
in and out of rehab and on top of that, could at times be really cruel with his words.
The guy was really good at putting her down.
She on the other hand was highly successful, was put together and really positive.
She totally believed that every person could create the life they wanted to create.
The differences between the two were huge.
My impression was that she was trying to fix him and that she was really just enabling
him.
As long as he said that he really did want to take control of his life and get better,
she being a good person believed him and was more than willing to help him even if it was
to her detriment.
Honestly, it was kind of wild to see somebody such as her get suckered into such a bad toxic
relationship.
At one point, she point blank asked me, "At some point everybody will get it together
in their lives, right?"
Much to her shock I said no.
Some people will never get it together and they won't because they don't want to.
And that's the truth.
So for example, somebody who keeps telling you that they are going to treat you better
but doesn't or somebody who is going to do the right thing but doesn't isn't somebody
who's word you can trust.
Do some patterns take time to get down, yes?
True.
But when you keep giving a person a chance over and over and they still keep letting
you down, it's time to see the writing on the wall and realize that that person cannot
be trusted.
Talk is cheap.
And some people will never change because they don't want to.
They may say they do, but they don't.
Which is why if you are in a toxic relationship that only hurts and brings you down, it's
time to put your foot down.
Don't expect somebody who has done the same thing over and over again to change.
Might they change some time in the future?
Maybe.
But what if that's 5, 10 or 15 years down the line?.
What if it's never?
So for example: How do you think it would impact you to put up with 10 years of b.s.?
What kind of toll would that take on your well-being?
And for what?
For somebody who is incapable of appreciating you the way they should?
For somebody who is incapable of doing what's right….
By the way, what I'm saying applies to both men and women.
Toxic narcissism isn't something that you see only in one sex.
It happens in both.
Sometimes in life, the most important thing to do is to stop giving people who don't
deserve it chances.
Instead, you need to start giving yourself the chance to live a better and happier life.
The only way to do that is to honor yourself and stop giving endless chances.
Mark my word, you won't regret it.

One of my favorite things in life, right now, is Netflix.
I can binge watch a show, I love documentaries,
I just love Netflix.
It's a way I can come home
after we put the girls down and eat dinner.
Winston and I, we love to have a good show.
And it's great.
So as I was scrolling through Netflix I saw a documentary
that I had heard a lot of people talk about,
but I hadn't seen it, it was called Minimalism.
So, I was like, oh yeah, this will be cool.
I'll totally watch his.
By the end, I was like praising Jesus, hallelujah,
I was so fired up.
Because not only do they talk about so much
of what we talk about here on the show
about getting out of debt and getting rid of stuff
and selling stuff and not going into debt for things.
I mean everything we talk about, they kept reiterating
and kind of had the same philosophies.
But their whole thing was that they got rid
of a ton of their stuff 'cause they realized
that stuff does not equal happiness.
And in America today we've fallen into this lie
that the more stuff you have,
the better your life is going to be.
And I just realized as I was watching this,
man, we have so much crap in our lives.
And in our houses and in our bathroom sinks
and in our closets, we have so much stuff,
so much stuff.
And you know me, I enjoy some things
so I always say it's okay to have nice stuff
just don't let your nice stuff have you.
But you walk into the average person's home
and it's like, you just have stuff everywhere.
It's just unbelievable.
And then again for the average American that goes
into debt to buy stuff that we do not need
and I just go so fired up.
I was like, who, who set the standard of living in America?
Everyone says you gotta have this style, this lifestyle,
this is average.
Whether it's a three car garage or a room for every person,
it's just like everything is just like, yeah, this is it,
this is it, this is what your life should look like,
this is the vacations you should take,
these are the clothes you should wear,
this is the brands that are great,
here's the grocery stores you should shop at,
this is what's average.
Who, who said that's average?
Who said that's average?
I'm like, no.
It just made me so mad.
Because I think we really have, we've gotten into this idea
that man, our lifestyle should look like this,
no matter what we make, no matter what our income is,
we deserve this standard of living.
And it just fired me up.
And so I was like, we've gotta get
The Minimalists on our show.
We have to get them here to talk about all of this
because you guys, again,
stuff is not going to make you happy.
Stuff is not going to make you happy.
Stuff is not bad.
I want you to be able to shop
at the grocery store you want to,
take the vacation you want, that's fine,
those are not bad things.
But when we put our value and our happiness that
that stuff is going to fulfill us, it's not.
We end up like a rat in a wheel for our entire lives,
chasing something that is never ever going to fulfill us.
(sighing)
Are you mad too?
I hope you're mad.
I hope you're just like, you know what,
I need to get rid of some crap in my house.
So, the money challenge for this episode
is when this show is over,
I want you to look around your house
and I want you to start small, but get rid of one thing.
Like go in your closet and be like,
wow, I have four or five black long sleeve shirts.
Have I worn one shirt, one of these shirts in a year?
The answer is probably no.
No, you haven't.
Get rid of it, sell it, give it away,
I don't care what you do with it.
Get rid of one thing.
So when you start to purge a little bit
it's like, oh wow, I did this.
I went into my closet and I did this,
I went and I looked and I was like, okay, I had this filter
of okay if I was going on a four week vacation,
what would I pack?
So, that's a lot.
Right, I mean I enjoy clothes.
But I'm like, half this stuff I haven't worn
in like a year and a half.
But I always have it in there.
I'm like, well, just in case that one thing comes up
I'm gonna need it.
I chucked all that clothes and it felt so good to purge.
It felt so good.
Because again, every time I buy that stuff
this little part of me thinks,
life's just gonna be better if I just have that thing.
Have you said that to yourself?
If I could just have this, I would be happy.
Well, I kept saying this about one pair of shoes
for about four years.
Well, my lesson was a heartbreaking one.
(upbeat piano music)
So there's this pair of shoes, well not a pair,
it's more like a brand.
And through like the last four years, I'm like, my goal,
it's so stupid and shallow Rachel but I'm gonna say it,
in my heart I was like my goal is to own
one pair of those shoes, just one pair of those shoes.
But every time I went to go buy 'em I was like, I can't.
It's just too expensive.
It's stupid to spend that kind of money on this shoe.
I'm not doing it, I'm not doing it.
So after Caroline, our second, was born,
she was probably like three weeks old
and the doorbell rang, Winston was home
and he went to the front door and he got the box
and he said, "Okay, Rachel,"
but I had Caroline, I was holding Caroline.
He was like, "Give me Caroline, you take the box."
And I was like, "What, what is this?"
He was like, "This is just a gift to say,
"I love you, I'm so proud of you, just enjoy,
"this is just a gift from me to you."
I was like, "What?"
And so I opened the tape of this big box
and there was the name of the shoes on top of the shoe box
and I may or may not have cried.
(laughing)
I was like, "Winston, what, no,
"there's no way you bought these, you bought these."
And I was hormonal, I had just had a baby people, okay,
so I probably wouldn't cry over a pair of shoes today,
but I did, I cried.
And I'm opening 'em and I mean my adrenaline
was like pumping and my hands were sweating
and I was like, "Oh my gosh."
And I had got 'em out of the box and they were beautiful.
I mean, they were, perfect.
It was everything I thought, I had ever imagined in my life.
Side note, credit to him, he went in,
ladies you're appreciate this, he went in my closet
and saw my other shoes and found my shoe size
and then even the heel measurement, he took a ruler thing
to measure the size of heel that I wear with my heels
and ordered the perfect shoe.
I mean, like, Cinderella has nothing on me.
I mean, it was like, it fit like a glove,
it was perfect and that feeling lasted for about 48 hours.
And now, about a year later, those shoes are in my closet.
And honestly, when I look at those shoes,
what I think of is more of Winston's sweetness
and love towards me than the actual shoes anymore.
And so that's what's so funny to me
about this accumulation of stuff that we have in our lives
and this thing that we think if we could just
go on that vacation, if we could just get a new car,
if we could just, just, X, Y, or Z
everything would be better.
And you guys I'm telling you, the finish line
keeps moving and moving and moving.
The finish line never fulfills you guys, never fulfills you.
Contentment is something that you have to find.
And I'm gonna be bold here and say you guys,
there's nothing on this Earth that is gonna fulfill you.
The deepest part of you that's gonna be fulfilled,
this piece that you think is missing,
if you do not have a relationship with Jesus
that is it, that's the ultimate answer.

But I'm telling you, you guys, if you don't know him,
if you're not in a relationship with him,
that's the ultimate.
That's the foundational of everything in your life.
And everything beyond that you can build on
your giving changes, your generosity explodes,
things suddenly have a different meaning in your life,
your relationships change,
everything is dependent upon that and not stuff.
Not stuff, I can tell you, tell you,
I'm telling it to myself again, remember my shoes,
man, Rachel, come on.
That we gotta learn together,
we gotta practice what we preach people, right?
So remember stuff is not going to satisfy you.

And I was telling everyone earlier about your documentary
and how much I just watched it and became obsessed
with everything that you guys are doing.
So, for those people that have not seen the documentary
or even heard of you guys, just explain what is a minimalist
and how did you guys get into all of this.
- Well the thing with minimalism, the way I describe it is
minimalism is the thing that gets us past the things
so we can make room for life's most important things,
which actually aren't things at all.
Ryan and I both grew up in Dayton, Ohio.
We were really poor and we thought the reason we thought
the reason we were unhappy growing up
was we didn't have any money.
And so when I went out, when I was 18,
I got that entry level corporate job
and I spent the next dozen years
sort of climbing the corporate ladder.
And by my late 20's I was living the American dream.
I had six figure salary, the luxury cars.
And there was nothing inherently wrong with the stuff,
but I wasn't fulfilled, I wasn't happy.
Because of course I made good money,
but I spent even better money and so I,
along with the American dream came the American debt.
And I was just consumed with almost half a million dollars
worth of debt at my peak or I guess my, at the low point.
- Yeah, which ever way you want to look at it.
- And I didn't feel like I had control of my time,
my resources, my own life.
I realized I was focused on the wrong stuff.
I was focused on success and achievement.
And it's really where this thing called minimalism
entered my life.
- Yeah for me it's interesting,
if you were to have told my 18 year old self,
what my 28 year old self was going to have,
I would have been so excited.
And when I was 28 I found myself questioning
I was the opposite of happy.
I was drowning in debt.
I was had a lot of discontent.
I was depressed.
And I remember seeing Josh, he had a major shift
in the way he was living his life.
And I sat him down one day and I was like,
"Dude, what is going on with you?
"Why are you so happy?"
And that's when he - Why are you so happy?
What's happening? - What's going on?
And he introduced me to this thing called minimalism.
So Josh and I, we came up with this crazy idea
called a Packing Party.
Where we decided to pack all my belongings
as if I were moving.
And then I would unpack only the items I needed
over the next three weeks.
So Josh came over and he literally
helped me box up everything,
my clothes, my kitchenware.
- You weren't moving, this is just the exercise.
- Just pretending. - Just pretending.
- The idea was if I packed up all this stuff
and I really really missed it
and I really really wanted to put everything back out,
I could totally unpack it
and put everything back in its place.
But of course after three weeks,
I had a completely different perspective on my life,
a completely different perspective on my things.
And I remember going to Josh and I was like,
"Man, this is a really cool story.
"There might be some people out there
"who could benefit from this story."
So we went and did what any two 30 year old dudes would do,
we started a blog.
- Yeah. (laughing)
Spread the word. - That's right.
That's really where TheMinimalists.com started.
It was with that 21 Day Packing Party.
- So good, that's such a brilliant idea.
'Cause I even think, because confession,
I have not done the complete minimalist lifestyle.
But when you say that, even my bathroom sink right now,
like, I'm thinking about it underneath,
I took out all the lotions and the eye cream,
all this stuff and put it in a box to see for three weeks
what I actually used out of that.
You guys, I mean it's probably like what?
Four things.
I'm feeling convicted right now.
As you're talking about all this.
Because it is, that's such a smart way to think about it,
it really is.
And I love this concept that you guys live out so well,
that stuff it doesn't fulfill you.
And I think we all know that.
The contentment piece of that foundation of your heart
is so huge in this process.
So, someone that's hearing this,
what's the first couple things they need to do?
- If you do want to simplify your life,
the first thing you have to do is not an action,
we'll get into the action in a second.
The first thing you need to do is ask yourself a question.
And that question is, how might my life be better with less?
And by asking that question, you start to identify
what the benefits of simplifying are.
Because for me initially it was finances.
I knew that my finances were out of control.
I needed to simply my life
so I could regain control of my finances.
But then I uncovered all these other benefits,
like, I made more time for creativity
and the people in my life and improved health.
And so what are the benefits for you
and understanding that won't just give you the how to,
but it will give you the why to.
Why am I simplifying my life?
From there, I think it's important to start small.
And just start somewhere.
We have something on our website called
the 30 Day Minimalism Game.
And here's how it work, you partner up with someone,
a friend, a family member, a coworker.
At the beginning of the month, you each decide,
the first day, we're both gonna get rid of one item.
Second day of the month, two items.
Third day of the month, three items.
It starts off really easy. - Yes.
- It gives you the momentum you need,
but by the middle of the month
it starts to get more difficult.
Day 15, you're like I have to get rid of 15 items.
- I was gonna say 20 items.
- Right? - I'll start in February.
(laughing)
Just 28, just 28 items.
Well, okay, so by day 20 you're like,
I have to get rid of 20 items today
and then tomorrow I have to get rid of 21 items.
Whoever goes the longest between you and your friend,
you win, but if you both make it to the end of the month,
you both won because you gotten rid of about 500 items,
it's a really good start.
- So I'm just curious, personally,
what is your house look like?
Like now, where you all live, your closets,
what's your life look like?
- If you were to walk into our home
it's not like you would jump up and say,
"Oh my goodness, minimalists must live here."
- Yes, yes.
- You probably would just look at our house and say,
"You know whoever lives here, they're pretty tidy."
And that's because everything that we have in our lives,
it serves a purpose or it brings us joy.
Everything else is gone.
- That's so great, so fun.
- We've got a washer and dryer.
And we still like to use hot water.
- Right, right, right, totally.
So there's kind of the extreme, I'm guessing there's
a range to be a minimalist there's like the crazy extreme,
that you're like, we laughed about this,
like a fork and a spoon and one plate,
just like something over here.
And then some people that are like, okay I like the idea
but I would rather be like minimalist-ish
like I don't want to dive in all the way.
Can you go 50-50 on this lifestyle?
- We can determine what is appropriate in our lives
and I think everything that we own
fits in one of three categories.
It's either essential.
And we all have the basics, same basics.
We're all wearing clothes right now.
We need housing, we need food.
We have the same essentials and we have the non-essentials.
Things that we could probably do without
but they truly add value to our life.
The augment our experience of life.
They amplify our life.
And then we have this third category.
That category is junk.
Most of the stuff that we own is junk
that gets in the way of the more
meaningful experiences in our life.
- Absolutely, well we went into our Facebook community
and people love you there in my Facebook community,
so we have some questions from people.
- Awesome. - For you guys to answer.
- A Brianna asked, in what ways can being a minimalist
help save you money and become debt free?
- I know for me that was one of my biggest drivers
behind getting into minimalism.
So I'll tell you the first thing that I did
when I started going down this road
is I took my brand new nice Toyota Solera,
a real nice brand new car, just a couple years old
and I traded that in for a 2004 Toyota Corolla
that had no car payment and I still have that car today.
So that's for me how I really appreciate what minimalism
has helped me do when it comes to my finances.
I am, I was officially debt free back in 2015.
- Oh, I love that.
- And I certainly owe minimalism a lot of credit for that.
- Absolutely so good.
Okay the next question is from Emily, she asks,
my husband and I like to think of ourselves as minimalists.
I think the one thing we struggle with though
is do you buy quality (expensive) things
or do you buy cheap?
I think the terms minimalists and the term frugal
are very similar but they're also different.
- I think when we think about minimalists
we think about some guy living in a cave
with no possessions or something.
I tend to own really high quality items.
I own far fewer items.
It's the weird paradox of minimalism for me
I get far more value from the few items I own,
than if they were watered down by 300,000 other items
that were sort of getting in the way.
Wouldn't you rather have one pair of really nice pants
that's gonna last you for two years
as opposed to 10 pairs of pants
that'll last you for a month each?
- Right, so good. - Absolutely.
- Katie asks, what's the very first small step you recommend
to anyone that wants to move toward minimalism?
- Man, I think starting with that question
how might my life be better with less,
that's definitely, you're gonna get the leverage
by getting to the why of that question.
But ultimately, there is the Packing Party approach
if someone is extreme.
The 30 Day Minimalism Game, I mean that is huge,
Josh talked about that earlier, that is amazing.
You just find someone else who wants to encourage you
to minimize and wants to minimize themselves
and you can have a lot of fun with it.
There's a lot of little small steps
you can kinda get started. - So good.
Sensing another Chad and Diana challenge.
- Uh oh.
- Date night challenge to the minimalism challenge
so we'll see if that happens.
- Okay, Nancy asks, how to part with stuff
when spouse wants to keep it
because "we might need it for, when, if"?
- I think, ultimately, in order to get a spouse,
or a friend or anyone else on board with this
you really have to show them the benefits.
I mean, if Josh had come to me and said,
"Hey Ryan, you know what?
"Your life's a mess, you need minimalism."
I probably wouldn't have (laughing)
reacted so excitedly towards that.
But by seeing the changes that Josh made
it made me want to ask him that question,
"What are you doing different with your life,
"you seem pretty happy."
But, ultimately, by just kind of living the example
and showing the benefits of it
that's really how you get someone to make a move
with their stuff, you can't force anyone into any of that.
- Okay, last question.
Lauren asks, how to be a minimalist with children.
I'm actually very intrigued.
- Well, me not having any kids it's very easy for me
to project my advice onto others.
I do like to use this one example,
we were at an event where one of the people
who showed up they were talking about
what they do with their child.
The example that they gave is their five year old,
six year old would come home from school,
and of course they've got pieces of art that they made
that they're very very proud of.
And they would go to their parent and would,
"Can I put this on the refrigerator?"
And the mom was like, "Yes, you absolutely can
"put this on the refrigerator."
So as they're walking over it's already covered
with other art projects just the whole refrigerator door.
And they'll say, "Now you get to choose which one
"you want to replace this with."
- Oh that's good.
- "And we will go over and we will get rid of this
"so we're not having a bunch of clutter in our life."
So that's what they do, they'll pick the one
that they want to come off the fridge,
they put the new one up.
And they go over and they might scan it
or take a picture of the work
and then toss it in the trash.
- Sure.
- I thought that was a cool approach.
- Well, honestly kid craft stuff.
Amelia comes home from pre-school
and it's just crayon that's like this.
And I'm like and you're never remember that.
Unless there's like a picture or a hand print
or a footprint, I mean, very small things to keep
as kid's craft, there's sweet, but.
- I think it's important to realize
that minimalism is not about deprivation
and we need to especially keep that in mind with our kids.
I know with Ella, I first, she's five now,
but when she was really little, I'm like,
you're gonna be a minimalist
and you can play with sticks and stones
and that's it. (laughing)
And I'm like what am I trying to do here?
No, she gets a lot of value from the toys that she has.
So having a big crate of toys
that she really enjoys is great.
Now she's not gonna get more value
if I got her 10 crates of toys.
They're actually gonna start getting in the way,
just like us, we just have our own toys as adults.
And so, with her I've realized
once she's done with a toy,
the thing that I want to instill in her is
she's no longer getting value from it,
but some other kid can, so let's go donate that together.
And letting her realize the benefit of giving as well.
- Alright you guys, well that was so great,

Okay, we all know food is a struggle in life.
Eating healthy things, but yet not busting the budget.
And it's just like the tug and war constantly.
So I brought in Dietitian, Registered Dietitian Jenna Waters
to help us out.
So thanks Jenna for being here.
- Yeah, thanks for having me.
- And we're actually friends from college.
College friends. - College friends.
- Go voles. - Go voles.
- Okay so you've been doing this for how long now?
- So, I've been a registered dietitian for about five years
and my background is with sports nutrition
and then I became a mom, we have three little ones.
And I just couldn't help but think,
we are professional athletes, moms are athletes.
- Yes, we are, all the time.
- All day everyday.
But at the same time we have so many demands
and need to find a way to balance all the variables.
- And want to feed our kids well, right?
- We want to feed them well, but not,
go crazy in the process.
- Yes, that's right, that's right.
- Absolutely.
- And so you have two words that I love.
Source and systemize.
- That's right, I feel like every family
has to find their sweet spot of let's source things well
in terms of ingredients, what ingredients are we using.
So essentially we could use the same recipes
that we've always been using.
But, by having better ingredients automatically
you're changing it. - Changing the source.
Which is over here. - Yep.
- So a few things that you're like you know what?
Look and see and you switch out
a few ingredients for better ones.
- Absolutely, no high fructose corn syrup,
hydrogenated oils, like canola oil, no soybean oil.
Instead we're going to choose things
like olive oil or avocado oil.
- And I'm guilty of this, I'm not gonna lie.
I probably have terrible stuff in my refrigerator,
but I love that you say, it's just like a baby step,
one thing at a time instead of buying that type of ketchup,
switch to buy something else.
- Exactly.
- And look on the label and see.
And I love this, this is. - The snack basket.
- The snack basket, brilliant.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
- Well it was born out of the fact
that my kids ask for snacks 20,000 times a day.
So these are healthy granola bars,
these are called Perfect bars, unsweetened applesauce,
at the beginning of the week I'll just
chop up some veggies and put 'em in here,
so hummus packages, individual makes it easy,
guacamole packets, a bunch of fruit.
Our policy at home is when this is gone for the week,
it's gone, y'all are snacked out.
We're not buying anymore. - Yes, yes.
It can get expensive.
Okay so sourcing and then systemize.
- Systemizing for a week.
And this is gonna look different for every single family.
So taking a look at your week
what are maybe the nights that
you can spend a little bit more time in the kitchen,
what are some nights that we have to do leftovers,
or maybe night that would have been a drive through night
maybe let's just do a quick Instant Pot meal.
So here's an example,
on Monday nights I have a little bit more time,
so I always choose a recipe
that I can make in bulk or double or triple
and then use in different ways throughout the week.
- Okay so where do you buy something like this?
- Really this would just be
at any conventional grocery store,
so we just bought chicken breast, organic chicken breast
and then cut them into three pieces each
and then just dipped it in egg wash
and then into a almond flour flax seed mixture.
I make a big batch at night
and then like I said with the leftovers
we'll use them in different ways through out the week.
And so this is a honey mustard dipping sauce.
So then on Tuesday here's what I do.
I just do a easy sheet pan meal.
Tuesdays are really busy nights for us
and so whatever night might be busy for you
you can just, I do a honey mustard salmon.
So we're using the leftover sauce
and putting it on top of the salmon.
Just some veggies, it's all one sheet, really easy.
- Pop it in. - Pop it in.
Bake it, roast it, whatever you need to do.
- It's so good. - Yes.
So this is, these look familiar.
- [Rachel] Chicken tenders.
- These are the chicken tenders.
And so we're gonna make chicken parm.
And so we're just gonna take the chicken tenders
and literally put the sauce over it.
- All over it. - Yep.
If you want to do the cheese?
- [Rachel] Yes. - Provolone cheese.
That was literally like a five minute dinner.
And then taco bowls.
This is cauliflower rice. - Yes.
I actually bought that for the first time this week.
- It's good.
- The first time, I'm going healthy.
- Good, that's awesome.
A plus that's awesome.
And little transitions like that
can make such a big difference in terms of nutrition.
But doesn't taste a whole lot different.
- Use ground beef, peppers, some guacamole.
- Exactly, these are those individual guacamole packets
from that basket right there.
- Okay. - So using ingredients
in different ways can really go long way.
- Love it. - Yes.
- And then I'm seeing, I'm feeling a pizza.
- Yes, feeling a pizza.
- The spirit is moving, the spirit is moving here.
- That's right.
So instead of take out pizza
which kinda used to be our go to, we're like,
alright we need to save some money and we're gonna actually
try to make it a little bit healthy.
So this we're gonna again, I cubed up the left over chicken
and we're gonna make a chicken pesto pizza.
- Oh yum.
- So I'm gonna do this, the pesto,
if you want to put cheese.
And this is a cauliflower crust.
- Okay, in the freezer section.
- It's in the freezer section at any grocery store.
- How does it taste?
- It's great, it's like a flatbread basically.
- [Rachel] Okay, which I do love flatbread.
- The chicken and some sliced roma tomatoes.
- And how do your kids like it?
- Honestly, they love it.
I think sometimes we have a you have to try it rule
in our house because we're just not doing this picky thing.
- That's how I grew up,
it was you make what mom cooks and that's it.
- Amen, amen.
So they try it and interestingly,
studies show it takes about 20 times
for a kid to try something before they start to like it
if they don't like it at first.
- Interesting.
- And I give up at like two. - Easily, easily.
- So, we just keep trying.
- It's so great.
And so a big thing again, plan, think ahead
so you're not last minute running through the drive through
and spending extra money you don't need to.
- Totally.
- Think ahead and you can do stuff so quickly.
I mean we literally just made these meals so fast.
I love it.
- Yes, just a little kind of forethought.
- So great.

Alright, so, you saw the title of this video. We're talking keyword research and
S-E-O for YouTube videos. How do you do it? We're going to demonstrate. Well, he will.
Yeah, I'll demonstrate. We're going to get down and dirty today. We're
going to get right in, hands-on. Well, not dirty. It's just a saying. Relax.
Talking about how to do S-E-O for YouTube videos. And I mean I just said that and
it sounded like I knew what I was even talking about. But honestly, I mean, I know
S-E-O stands for Search Engine Optimization. But tell me what it is
you're going to do for us. Okay, YouTube allows us to do search engine
optimization in a much easier way. So, let me just preface it by that. It's a
lot easier than the the S-E-O of the past. And it works way better, it gets way
better results. So, I want to explain S-E-O and kind of take you through the YouTube
S-E-O process that I do. And kind of explain the end goal of what you're
trying to do with it. And then I'm going to demonstrate. So, I'm going to grab my laptop
here and demonstrate how to do it. But I'm confident that if I explain this
first then when you do it, it'll make a lot more sense and you'll
actually get the results. I've taught this for years and hundreds of
times. So, I've got to teach it first. So, let me share kind of a little visual or
maybe an analogy, okay? So, picture a tree. You've got a trunk, you've got branches,
(Okay) branches that gets thinner and then at
the end, you've got leaves. The leaves are what we want, okay? And we're talking... When
we do keyword research to find topics, we want to find the leaves. We don't
want to make videos that are on the trunk or on the branches. We want to go
out to the leaves, okay? So, an example would be, we're going to use the push up
example, okay? If the push ups... That category... You mean, that literal? Physical
Push-ups? Okay. You're a push up expert, obviously. Well, clearly. And if we're going to make
a video on our videos on push-ups, we don't just want to say push-ups by Scott
Christopher. Right. Okay, that would be the trunk. That's the trunk. That's the trunk.
A branch might be, "How to do push-ups well." Okay. That might be a branch.
It's getting more specific. Right, yes. But a leaf might be... And I've got some examples
here, okay? Okay. So, these this is going to be a very specific term? Yes. And I've got
a list of several of them. Let me explain this part. You want to create videos on
several different types of leaves because one branch will have a variety
of leaves. And if you rank each video, each leaf topic video, eventually your
branch will rank. And you will compete on YouTube. Maybe even the trunk.
Like for one of my channels, we do rank for real estate investing. That would be
a trunk. And that's a very trunk term.
Because there's going to... But we do that in the
beginning. Yeah. I've created hundreds of leaf videos. So, here's some examples on. So, work
backwards almost, really? Right. That's what you want to do. You want to work backwards.
Okay, so that's the goal. Here are some examples of push-ups. "How to do a perfect
push-up for beginners." Nice. The next video would be, "Does the perfect push-up really
work?" That could be a whole separate video talking about the results you get
from it. The third one, "What muscles does the perfect push-up work?" And these are
leaf. Leaf, leaves. Each of these will be the leaf in topic video. Because they're drilled down.
Did a little more specific than just how to do a good push-up? Yeah. Yeah. Okay,
another example. The perfect push-up 30-day challenge. So, you can have a video
about that. It talks about... For Filipinos? That would be even more specific? That would be like a way
way down. But what Filipinos do it differently than Utahns? So, let's ask this
Filipinos watching right now. Yeah. My team are Filipinos. See, that's what I'm saying. Hi!
So, another one. How to do the perfect diamond push-up? In Manila. I'm just messing. No,
you're good, I'm just going this is all the entertainment value. That's why he's
here. How to do the perfect one-arm push-up? Okay.
Wow, that might... Well, I was because I was automatically thinking of just one-armed
people. But you're right. Two aren't people still do want to push-ups like
rocky. Not me. But, yeah. Oh, gosh, no. I mean... One day. Just a visual quick, quick visual.
We've got 2 more push-up videos that I could create here. Leaves, okay?
The perfect push-up routine or how do the perfect push-up routine. That
starts to feel a little branchy to me. Maybe. I don't know.
See, it's all... Here's a way to tell it. If you go to YouTube and you
type it and see how many other videos have that phrase in their title, and
keep going until... Yeah, there's none there. You want to find these leaf long phrase
topics that other people aren't using or that are being very rarely used. Now, you
may be answering this, I'm not sure coming up or whatever. Because I can't
read your mind. But if you do a long leaf type title or whatever. If you get really,
really specific and you get an exact match, you're the only video out there
for sure. But does it also capture less? You know what I'm saying? Like, if you say
"How to do the perfect diamond push-up in Milan or in wherever in Manila." Will you
at least still get some hits on how to do the perfect diamond push-up?
But if something happens to say in Manila, you're definitely getting that.
The answer is yes, eventually. If you make several videos like this. So, the whole
reason I'm having a list... So, I've got 8 here. The 8Th one was how not to
do push-ups or something. You know, (Yeah) "How not to do push-ups
perfectly." Maybe but I don't know. I did search for that. How not to do push-ups.
Well, you don't want to get injured. Yeah. Okay, there we go. So, if
you're going to make 8 videos that are all leaf topics but they all say, you
know, "How to do the perfect push-up?" Then eventually, a rank for that or the phrase
perfect push-up. You'll be known as the perfect push-up man. That's your channel.
Yeah, perfect push-ups channel. So, you do want... It's not that you don't want to
rank for the trunk or for these branches but by targeting the trunks of
the branches, you're not going get there. But by targeting the leaves, you'll rank
for the leave topics immediately. And then over time, you'll rank for the small
branches. Then eventually the big branches, the trunk. Okay, now do you
believe that you've laid down enough theory for us that we can start building for execution?
I think so. Let's jump in and show you how to find the branches that lead
to the leaves. Beautiful. Alright. So, we're going to demonstrate it for you now.
And Scott here suggested that we do motorcycle repair. So, let's say Scott
wants to make motorcycle repair videos. I think this will be an easy one to really
demonstrate how to get to the branches and the leaves. There's a lot a
lot of places you can go. And if you were to make a video on, you know, motorcycle
repair video 1. And then motorcycle repair video 2. Pretty, pretty trunky.
Yeah. Pretty Trunky. I like that. I'm going to show you 3 different tools. This
one here is called the "Keyword researcher." It's a tool that you pay once
for it. I believe it's 50 bucks from a company called Clever Gizmos. And then
you download it. There's another tool that is free. This one is called the
Keyword Planner. It's a Google AdWords tool. You do have to have a Google
AdWords account. But then the tool is free. And we'll start here. But I want to
show you what the other tool, is the third one. It's by Moz and we'll come
here. You come here to free S-E-O tools. And you start here. We'll just type in
motorcycle repair. Let me just demonstrate this and while we're here.
It's actually a pretty simple tool.
Take off the space there. Alright. So, once you bring this up, it's actually
good to come to keyword suggestions. And then, in this drop-down menu, I like going
to our questions. So, it's giving you keyword suggestions that aren't
questions. Yeah. So, what's great about this is it's how
to service a motorcycle? How to fix motorcycles? How to service motorcycle
Forks. That's that's getting more leafy. That's more leafy or branchy. Yeah. How
does service motorcycle rear shock. So, these are getting more specific. And this
will give you ideas of different branches for sure. And sometimes even
some leaves. I mean, what is a fender eliminator kit on a motorcycle? That is
definitely a leaf. Right. It does say here "no data" meaning, we might want to tweak
that. But that... Because we want to make sure that it is searchable. We want to
use a phrase that people are searching for. So, we want to find really specific
titles. But we can't forget search. Even if it's just, you know, 50 searches per
month. That means that people are actually typing in this exact phrase. And
we don't know about this one. So, let me use this as an example. I'll copy that.
Let's take it over to the keyword planner. I can paste it right here and
hit get search volume. And it tells us, you know what? It actually does get
searched 10 times a month. Now, that doesn't sound too impressive. And when I
teach people about keyword research, they always want to go after
the phrases that have a thousand or 10,000 Yeah. Greedy. "Ooh, this one
has a hundred thousand." Yeah. But guess what? I don't know. You're not going to get
ranked for those ones. Because the more competitive ones, there the more branch
phrase topics anyway and they're more competitive. And if you're brand new to
motorcycle repair, you create a video on on that topic. It's not going to rank day
one. This one right here. And it's a bridge. So, I can't see what was it. "What
is a fender eliminator kit on a motorcycle?" would be a fantastic video if
if that would be a video that matches what you want to teach. So, if this
content, that would be a fantastic video. You know why? Because you're going to rank
number one, day one. It's a perfect leaf. And
it's an easy specific one to make. I mean you're just making a video that's
answering that question. Maybe you have one, you can show them. You can
demonstrate, you know, how to put it on. That would become the title of my video?
Absolutely. Okay. And what I also put that in the
description of the video or what I want to save that space for something that
might double up my chances. In the first couple lines of the description, you want
to include this. It doesn't have to be worded the exact same way. But I mean the
way this is worded is pretty natural. Yes. But in your description, it's like, "In
this video, I show you what a Fender elimination kit for a motorcycle is. I
show you how to install it." So, you actually, you know, write a real
description. Got you. But, yeah,include those words
in it. This exact phrase not only is it your title but you also want to put
it in as a key word that just helps them to know know. And you're going to want
to say this in your video. You know, the answer while you're talking. That's
really important. So, in the video, you're going to be saying, "So what is a fender
eliminator kit on a motorcycle? Well, here's one right here.
This is how you install it. Alright, I'm going to grab my motorcycle. Let me grab the
fender eliminator kit. Now, why is it important that you actually say it?
YouTube will transcribe your videos and will find the words and make sure it
matches your title. Make sure it matches your key word and the description. No way. They do that?
Serious business. Wow. So, anything you put out there, they're
transcribing? Oh, yeah. Aren't you glad that YouTube does this? Very glad. The
reason that I am glad is well... Is because I know that when I find a video... If
YouTube's going to recommend a video to me, I know what it's going to be about because
YouTube verifies it from all different angles and they're suggesting it to me
because they know the types of videos that I like. Isn't that interesting.
You can't cheat YouTube. Don't try and cheat YouTube. There's probably ways you
can but why would you want? Yeah, exactly. They're giving you, I mean, all these
tools that are available out there. And this one now. This one was the free one
or was this one with... This one... You can Do the others work about basically the
same way as this one does? Each tool is this is unique. This one is simple. And it's
easy to use. But if you use it more than a few times a month, you do have to pay.
So and it's a monthly subscription and it's not cheap. The keyword planner from
the Google AdWords account, this is free and I use this one all
the time. Let me show you another way that you can
use this tool. I'm going to come up here to modify search. And instead of get
search volume, I'm going to go to find new keywords or search for new keyword. So,
I'll type in motorcycle repair. So, what I'm going to look for first and then I'll
demonstrate how to use that first tool I have showed you the keyword. Keyword
researcher. What I'm looking for now is actually branches that I haven't thought
of. Okay, so motorcycle repair shops. Maybe
not applicable to my YouTube channel. Motorcycle service, repair near, mechanic
near, motorcycle parts, cheap motorcycle parts. So, these are just broken into
different categories. Let's just try. We'll do Harley. I didn't think of that.
Maybe we could make video specific to Harley. How are they mechanics. Hmm. Makes
me at least gives me the idea of... Oh there's Harley repair right there. So,
if we come in here, Harley-Davidson motorcycle repair. We're going to take that
phrase over to the keyword researcher. And I can put in an asterisk before it.
And I'll add it again... And I'm also just going to add in a couple other versions. I'm
going to just get rid of the word motorcycle. So, watch what this tool does.
Alright. So, I've got in those that look criteria. They're what I want it to look
for. And I hit play and now it starts searching all of the search queries that
people use on Google and other search engines. And it just finds lots and lots
of examples. It pauses sometimes, so that it doesn't offend the search engines. And
these are all the things that people have typed in, searching. Alright. So, we
finished there. If I hit this button here ad to master list, we see there's 470.
I'm going to hit cleanup because there might be some duplicates.
Okay. And that that took us down to 267, okay? If I hit select all and then I hit
the keys, Ctrl copy or command C for copy. So, now I've got that in my clipboard. And
if I come back here to the keyword planner, go to modify search and go down
to the second one. Get search volume data. Okay, so I can paste in up to a thousand
different phrases here. And then if I hit get search volume. It does its thinking.
And we need to go to the keyword ideas tab. Alright. So, these are all the
phrases that we typed in. It says, "Here all 265 are here." And we can sort it by... I
think it already was but average monthly searches. And you can check the phrases.
Harley-Davidson repair shops near me. I don't know if
that's a video that I want to check. But you know what? The easier way, I'm going to
come here to download, save to Google Drive, hit download, wait a moment and
then open file. Now, this is a lot more user-friendly. It gives me a whole bunch
of data. I only need 2 columns. Let me grab that one and move it. The 2
columns I want are the columns with the key words in it. And the column with the
average monthly search volume. And I want to look at any phrase starting here and
above. Any phrase that has ten searches or more above. So, I can just go through
this list now and a lot of these are going to be great leaf topics. Interesting.
Harley-Davidson odometer repair. Yeah. Those are very leafy. Yeah. "Are they Davidson Golf
Cart repair?" Yeah, even though... Golf cart, that's interesting. Even though
those are shorter, meaning, this one's only 4 words long.
Hardly-Davidson odometer repair. That's pretty specific. It's a specific type of
Motorcycle. Odometer repair. So, that's something going to be a leaf topic. Most of my
clients have the same type of reaction. It's like, the steps are kind of simple
once you know the end goal. You want to find the leaf topics. Here's all the
tools you can use. But then you're like, "Ah, but this sounds boring." And I agree. I
don't necessarily enjoy this. That's why I have employees that do a
fantastic job. Oh good for you. And we do this for my clients. So, my clients help
me with the topic brainstorm but then we'll go and we'll do all the keyword
research for them. So, can I just have you come over to my house and do this for me?
Or can you do it here? I'll let my team. I'll let my team. Maybe we can do a topic
brainstorm over the phone. Okay. Easy. So, I could do this
with you for distance? I never have to leave... We just chat or you can... We can share...

As a business owner, we all make mistakes.
- [Announcer] I've gotta confess.
- Hey guys, it's Charley
from Confessions of a Business Owner here,
and today I am with the one and only Kim Barrett.
How you doing, Kim?
- Doing super well, so I see, how you doing?
- Dude, I'm well, I'm in the new office.
And I'm thrilled to be back with you.
Especially because, for those of you on video would see,
Kim's actually decided to copy me,
and just wear a black T-shirt.
So we're-- - I just have
a slightly deeper V, that's all
- Well, I'll pull mine down.
Alternate, alternate.
Dude, but it's great to have you on the show
because this is a topic today that I think
everyone can get a lot of value out of.
This is something (exhaling) I tell you what,
I learned the hard way, and especiialy
got smashed with, but it was coming
to the realization that I was
the biggest problem in my business.
- That's not a fun one, right?
'Cause all the business owners are going like,
no, it's definitely, it's like, it's the economy,
it's my staff, it's the clients, it's this, it's that,
and then it's like, it's you, and it's like ooh.
I don't like that. Right between the eyes.
- It's a very tough pill to swallow.
And I remember the moment I had to swallow it.
I'm gonna talk about this right now because this,
this moment was very defining in my actual
career of being a business owner.
I just got out of, I wouldn't say just, but I'd left
my first agency, my marketing agency.
I'd moved on from that company and I'd started
a completely different business, Outsourcing Angel.
Okay, so I'm with Lynn, I've got a completely
different business, so marketing services
and I'm now in outsourcing services.
Now I had completely different people around me as well.
It wasn't the same team at all.
And then this really really fascinating thing happened
was I got to the same level in business
and had the same problems.
Who would have thought?
And I remember so much, I remember this moment of like,
okay, I'm sitting there and I'm like, oh, there's gotta
be like some common denominators, there's gotta be
something that is like, I've done again
that I've let into this business.
And then I was sitting there, and it was literally
one of these moments, you know when you have
one of those, like, oh fuck moments?
And I was like.
It's me.
I'm the common denominator between these companies.
Even though completely different things.
Completely different team managed to somehow
recreate the exact same revenue level
and problems from the first business.
And the same wins and successes as well I should mention.
It's a two way street there.
But that was a very defining moment when I realized okay,
well clearly I've got to keep working on myself
wasn't as you mentioned the economy, all that blame
really moved away from me, it wasn't the people
I was working with, it wasn't the business model,
it wasn't any of those other things,
it really all tied back to me.
Have you had any experiences like that Kim?
- Yeah, well and I'll chime in on that side.
I definitely hadn't but I go to a lot of fans personal
development, business development, and they always say
your business will only grow to the extent that you're
willing to grow, and I've always been like
yeah, yeah, of course, sure, but what about marketing?
What about sales? Blah, blah, blah.
And it's the same thing it's like unless you get to,
and there's two ways, it's like I feel at the very
beginning the biggest problem is you because you hold
on to everything, and if you assess it
like, when you look at like, for example, the theory
of constraints and you assess how everything
flows in your business, when you hold onto that
it chokes everything up.
But then as well it's like your own mindset around
what's possible, and one of the adages of the things
that I always think of is like, whatever got you to here
won't get you there, and that's always one that stuck
with me and it's like (exhaling).
So, I can't just do the same thing over and over again?
- No, I love that saying though and it's very, very true.
I often need reminding of what you just said,
and I'm even going to repeat it right now.
What got you to here won't get you to there.
Very wise words, Kim.
- 'Cause it's like, oh, well I just keep doing what I've--
keep doing what you've always done you'll keep getting
where you've always got, and so you've got to change
these things up and it's so often where
I hit a road block and it's like, whoa,
even when it comes to, for example, the leadership
of a manager on my team, and it's like (exhaling)
I get to a certain, like you said, like you get
to a certain point and you get great wins,
but also it's like you don't get past that,
and it's because, well, it's you that's holding it back.
And sometimes when you step out of the way
generally a lot of the time you'll see
that's where things change.
But it's not just, it's not like, oh, I just
remove myself from my business and then everything
will work, there's so much more to that,
and I'm sure we've both got a few points
on how people can actually do that and alleviate that
to make things happen, but it's always so interesting
that the same time it happens, and it happens with
not only myself where I've seen it pop up
and then have to remind myself, but with clients
and things like that also, where they're like,
oh, cool, we want this and we're just gonna
keep doing this it's like, well, again, same thing.
You know if you keep doing that like, what's the
definition of insanity doing the same thing
over and over again and then thinking you'll
get a different result.
- Absolutely, and I think we've both been fortunate
that we are in a B-to-B space.
We know a lot of other business owners
and we've seen a lot of other businesses.
Now, I want to know your thoughts on this.
Something that's really interesting in my view
is that I've been in business a while now
and I know people that are still at the same
level they were at when I started.
And then I've seen other people astronomically
out pass them in a shorter amount of time.
And I find it really fascinating that those
that stick to those habits and don't work on themselves
really do just stay at that same level on repeat.
Do you see the same thing amongst other people?
- Yeah, a hundred percent.
It's like if there's, if you aren't willing to,
I like it that sometimes I think to, like some people
will call it their ego, right?
Well, I don't think it's ego 'cause I think everyone,
and I don't think ego is necessarily good or bad,
but I think it's adaptiveness, and it's like
if you believe that what you're always going
to do is always going to be right
you will never adapt and change and do anything else.
It's like sometimes you have to have a little bit of
that ego around what you do, but I don't ever think
that I know a hundred percent of everything
or that I'm always right.
I'm always willing to be proven wrong,
and do different things and change them.
So, I'm always willing to be adaptive,
but a lot of people they're like, well, no.
I know better, I know this, I know that, and it's like
they're not willing to adapt, you know?
They're like the cavemen that didn't
want to come out of the cave.
Now, you know, they didn't get to turn into humans
they're stuck in a cave somewhere under a boulder.
So, unless you're willing to adapt you can't ever
move forward, and I think that's the biggest point,
because if they stay there and they do the same things
like, yeah, you say it, like two years ago
you were doing that.
Why aren't you moving forward?
Why isn't your business growing or progressing?
And I think that's the reason.
- Yeah, absolutely, and you can use some really
obvious examples of this, you can look at like, Kodak.
Where it's like refusal to change and adapt
to market or refusal to keep investing in the growth
and innovation of their business lead to their demise.
And you could look at This Here Marketing and go
you know, if you were still relying on the yellow pages,
and you're still going into your business from that approach
instead of adapting and looking forward and challenging
that personal growth, you can stay stuck on the same thing.
So, the only continual is your need to adapt
that keeps coming through.
- And I always like from my marketers perspective,
my marketing hat on, there's the Breakthrough Advertising,
Eugene Schwartz, great book, right?
The levels of market sophistication,
at no point ever is there a level of market
that doesn't get competitors coming and doesn't need
adaptation, or doesn't get more sophisticated
and need of change.
So it's like, well, if that doesn't happen in marketing,
which technically the way that he positioned it is really
around business as a whole with more people entering,
and you don't adapt it's like, well, you can't ever win.
You get buried in a red ocean if you're looking
at the blue and red ocean strategies that you just
get buried in that, so it's like,
well, how can you, again, it's the definition of insanity,
how can you expect to grow if you
don't adapt and change to it?
- Yeah, absolutely, and I'll bring up another story here
because I think it's really interesting.
I'm almost like, reminiscing on all the times
I've been humbled in business right now, which is many.
But I remember in Outsourcing Angel as well
for me when I looked at things, like I had that ego
and that thing where I thought I was always right.
And then I'd gone into a business where I had a partnership
with Lynn in Outsourcing Angel, and the worst part about
this story is I can't even remember what we were
disagreeing about, but we got to something and I thought it
should be done one way, and she thought it should
be done another way, and I was so sure I was right,
and I was so sure Lynn was wrong that I was like
we have to do it this way, and Lynn just did it her way,
and to my surprise, achieved a fantastic result.
And I had this very humbling moment in that business
going, okay, I was wrong, like I was actually wrong.
It's funny how these kind of happen again,
but it was like being wrong that day was actually
one of the best things that ever happened to me.
Because it really removed the need for me to be
involved in everything as well,
because other people started to become
more competent for the decisions they were making,
and I was confident that I might have a good idea,
but someone else is capable of coming up
with unique things, so how this kind of ties into
the topic of today is that if you're one of these people
in your business trying to hold onto everything and you
need to be right about everything, and you're not allowing
people around you to do the things they need to do while
you're holding that all in, you can see how
overwhelmingly you do become the restriction
in your business once again on another level.
So, letting go of that can be very powerful.
And I love this idea from Ray Dalio as well
in his fantastic book Principles
is that 90% of business owners fail.
Most entrepreneurs will sit there and go,
well I'm in the 10%.
And what about the other of you going, okay,
chances are I'm in the 90%, what can I do about it?
How do I attack this from the other view?
And that can be a really powerful way to look at it as well.
- Yeah, a hundred percent.
Giving people things to think about
as well as, as you've said, if you've been
hitting a wall and you go cool,
my business has always been at the same level,
then there's something you need to do.
And the funniest thing is I have a chat
with my sister's partner, Calvin,
who owns a personal development business.
And it's like, I like, constantly give him this,
I remember like, three years ago telling him about
this idea, telling him to do something,
and then three years later there was enough pain
for him to like, oh, I'm gonna try that out now,
and he's like, oh, this is great!
Why didn't I try this earlier?
But it's just so hard, and as I said,
when things are working and you're like,
well, they're working, and I think it ties
back to the episode that we did about how
good people are the most costly thing in your business.
Good results are probably the most costly thing
for allowing your business to grow
'cause you're like, well, things are working.
But it may not be growing, so you go
well, why would I change when things are working?
I have been right all this time
consistently, consistently, consistently.
Like, why would I change that?
And it's like, well, as you were saying
for that growth you've got to be able to change
something, and something's got to happen
to allow that to go on, because otherwise
it literally is one of the most costly things
that you can have in your business.
And I think there's two-pronged being.
Number one, the way that you think about things,
but also number two, the way in which you hold onto things
and it's like whether you're letting other people
in the business make a decision or something like that.
I remember before where I brought people into my team,
and I was paying them, and then I was still making
all the decisions and doing half the stuff for them.
Afterwards I'm like, hang on, I just brought this person in
but now I'm doing the stuff because I don't want them
to do it, because they're not going
to do it as good as me or something?
And I'm like this is, what, huh?
Said in my brain, why am I doing this for?
This is so stupid.
- Well, it ties back to time and time again is that
we keep becoming our own biggest problem in the business.
We didn't enable that person in that example,
or we felt we had to be right, or addicted to the drama,
or settling for average results, there's many things there.
So, I want to kind of shift the conversation a little bit
to the someone that's listening to this right now
and is probably hanging out in Egypt, and when I say
hanging out in Egypt it's because they're around denial.
- I was waiting for that. (laughing)
- I've been waiting for an episode to use that.
But it's like, honestly, there's a huge amount of denial
in many, many business owners that think they're not
the problem even if their business is successful.
Or not successful, and there's a lot of external blame
that happens there, but let's pretend someone comes
to that point, what can someone do to start growing
themselves to push through to these next levels?
How do they, I guess level up and have them be
less of the problem, or enhance the level of problem
they are becoming, so they're moving in the right direction?
- That's a great, I think there's so many different
answers to that, but I think the first needs to become
around a level of self awareness,
because we all can't be good at everything.
And I think if you go, well, great, if you're at this
point in your business, and look at it as identifying
what are the things you actually do everyday?
And which of them are you actually, not good, but great at?
'Cause most the time you're hanging onto all this extra
things that you're not even good at, and you just
want to do it because you have to.
And it's like you probably actually pretty much suck, right?
And you could be getting someone else much better
on your team to take care of that would be my first step.
'Cause I know that's something I've done
previously quite often as I hang onto it,
and I'm like why am I doing this when I suck?
Like, I should definitely have
someone else doing this for me.
- Definitely, I think awareness is a huge part of it.
I think that's step one for sure.
So, I'll look at it from there.
Step two, though, when I come to it, but number one
obviously awareness.
Number two, though, I think so many people have
created fantastic books where you can
level yourself up through gaining knowledge.
So, if you're someone that wants to grow
as an individual I'd really be encouraging you
to incorporate some daily reading.
Particularly biographies of other people.
- To piggyback on that 2.1, and there's also
like leveraging other people, like we did a podcast
about leveraging other peoples' experiences.
If you're not in a group where you can go cool,
I'm hitting this level, like hash-- hashtag,
I was like, hint-hint, I don't know why I said hashtag.
Hint-hint, the association, right?
If you're not in a group where you can ask questions
of people who are equally as successful and going
to other levels, then go cool, I'm hitting this what's next?
I think that's a big, that's the easiest way
is leveraging other people's experiences
and going cool, if you guys hit this, how did you
overcome this, like what did you need to do,
or how did you need to adjust to allow that to happen?
- Yeah, I think that one can't be understated at all
is, like, environment and who you hang around play
a big role in how you act in business.
And I notice this more and more.
Is you've got to be educating myself undoubtedly,
but then you also do need to be hanging around
more business owners who are trying to achieve great things.
That is undoubtedly how you become
less of your own problem in the business.
So, I really like that one, Kim.
And then the third one I'm gonna kind of, I suppose
piggyback on top of again on that one, is going mentors.
It's really important to have mentors
who can kind of pull you up on these things
and identify those things you should or shouldn't
be doing and how you are being your own biggest problem.
I might even throw a story in on this one again.
It's Charley's story day.
But I was actually, because I have mentors in my life
as I'm sure you do as well.
And I was on a call with someone, and I came into this call
with a list of things I wanted to work on in the call,
I'm like, look, I've got these areas I want to work on,
and this particular mentor of mine basically said
I know you've got all of that,
but this is what you need to do.
So, even though I thought I knew what I should be doing,
he brought a completely different set of lists to the table,
and I sat there and I said, I can come up with all the
reasons on why I should just take care of the problems
I perceive I have, but if I'm gonna listen to someone
who's further ahead than me, like, really I should just
work on this stuff.
Now, funnily enough, I did what this person asked
and all my other problems seemed to evaporate.
So, it's kind of like they knew, it was kind of like,
they were like...
But this is, you know, we don't know what we don't know.
But if we're gonna level up as business owners and not
be our biggest problem, peers, mentors, and education
just become the cornerstone of us endlessly leveling up.
Kim, I know you do all three of them in your own life.
Would you say well and truly worth it?
Is it something you think all entrepreneurs
should be doing, or business owners?
- A hundred percent, it's arguably one of the most
important things, but I think the thing to remember
like I mentioned with that before with that adaptability,
is that it's always going to
continue to happen to some extent.
You're like, oh, cool, I got rid of this thing,
and then there'll be something else that's
holding the business back from growing.
Maybe it's I'm at the level where I should be
outsourcing and bringing more team members.
However, I want to hold onto that 'cause I think
it's gonna reduce the profitability of the business
as an example, as a tangible one.
But that's actually the solution for you
breaking through to the next level.
I think the biggest one for me is going like,
you've got to have all those three,
but it's gotta be a continuous consistent action
that you take to improve yourself to keep
improving your business, because otherwise
it's gonna happen again.
It's that whole, you have growth, and then plateau,
and then growth and plateau, trying to make the
plateau's as small as possible by having,
by doing those three points consistently
through your business journey.
- First off, don't you think it's funny
that as entrepreneurs we always sell ourselves
the lie of like, as soon as we solve the problem
we have right now everything will be fine?
Like there's not another problem waiting for that.
- It's so good, you end up having sometimes
the same problems but they're just bigger, right?
It's like, oh, that problem again, however now I don't have
I didn't have two staff, I have ten staff.
Oh, it's a slightly bigger problem there to go through.
- Yeah, the problems do get bigger.
But the next point I want to put in there is like
do you have a routine, or system, or something you do
regularly to make sure that you do
get growth from yourself personally?
'Cause personally, from my point of view is I make sure
I read every morning for twenty minutes.
That's unlocking for me, and it's a behavior
and a habit that's served me really well.
And then on the other side of things is I make sure
I'm checking in with peers at least a couple of times
a week and other people that inspire me like yourself.
Every time we do this podcast I feel pushed to
grow and do more, and then once a month I always like to
make sure that I get around someone who's ahead of me.
So, do you run anything like that in your own life?
- Yeah, one hundred percent as well.
Massive morning groups and mentors I'm a part of
is a regular daily occurrence, really, but as well
I'm the same, probably every morning for the first
forty minutes, 'cause when I get up,
first thing I do is I put in my headphones
and I put on two particular podcasts that I've been
listening to at the moment, I'll listen to them,
as I'm getting ready and then I go to the gym
so I do my like workout and at the same time
I'm learning something new or continually pushing my
growth in that way, because otherwise,
if I don't do it in the morning
sometimes I'll just never do it, so I'll do it first thing,
headphone straight in, listen to my audiobook or my podcast,
and then get the ball rolling.
It's something that I've-- it's like I don't
know everything in the entirety of the world
about business, and I never will, so I've
got to keep continually learning to see, and as well
but I think one last point, 'cause I think it's
very important, not just, and like you said,
not just learning for the sake of learning,
but going at the moment, I foresee, or maybe
I've been told by my mentors that this is the thing
I need to work on right now, and then that's what
I focus on learning about, and that's what I focus
on bring in to my education in the morning and
things like that.
From a business standpoint sometimes it's personal
development stuff also, but by having the awareness
first of the problem and then layering on the training
or the information and things that are gonna help me
directly correlating to that point also.
- Yeah, I think that's a really wise way to do it.
It shows because you're one of those people that has had
a tremendous amount of growth in the time I've known you.
Like, you haven't stayed still at all.
And I think for anyone listening to this in what's
just being laid down is a very, very, how can I put this?
Wise flight plan, a wise way to go about it,
because it's something we've seen many people have that.
And it's funny that the more people I speak to and ask
about these topics, and I mean I used to be a
big fan of the Tim Ferriss podcast.
And he always used to talk about the commonalities
in successful people, but it just seems to be so true.
The people that I know that are successful
behave in a very similar way that you've just described.
So, to pick up those habits and behaviors
and focusing on the types of content
that are going to give you the most benefit
just makes so much sense for me.
- Yeah, a hundred percent, and what about yourself, Charley?
Is there anything else, you know obviously you have
masterminds, mentors and read anything, but if there
was like one little cherry on top that you always
have around you what would it be?
- The big thing for me this year okay, is in all of
these things is what if I go into things assuming I'm wrong?
And I know that can sound a little bit crazy
but when you look at the stats it's like we all
just seem to be overwhelmingly wrong
when it comes to business.
90% of us fail, there's so many things that come through,
and I was like, well what if I assume when it comes to an
idea I have the wrong answer from the beginning?
And I seek out people that have done it
or are further along in which I can query in that,
and that's been a really big thing for me this year
in making sure I don't become the biggest thing,
or the biggest problem in my business
or what's holding it back.
Is I'm constantly looking to leverage other peoples'
knowledge to solve my next problem
before I just keep having a crack.
I feel like when I was earlier on in business
I used to always solve things from trial and error.
Like, it was just make a mistake, work it out,
and there was always those with like
fail fast and fail forward, but I tell you what,
that's a really expensive and slow way to grow a business.
So, it's like, you can go for it if you've got the time
and resources, but ultimately having that little
in-between of like idea, assume I'm already wrong and how
to go about it, ask someone who's done it,
and then do it the way they said,
and then use a feedback loop has been
the most effective thing I've introduced
this year from preventing myself from being the problem.
- Yeah, that's so good, I love that.
That's something everyone could do more of. Me included.
I love that, that's perfect.
- Yeah, well there's the little framework that I think
people will really get a lot of, I think I can help
everyone in all honesty.
The more you incorporate that and leverage
other peoples' experience the further and quicker
you seem to go, and I've noticed that myself
with how much quicker I've been able to get through
my projects, and how much faster Outsourcing Angel's
grown, or this podcast has grown, of the community
association has grown is because of those steps.

Hi my name is Bill and today I'm going to show you how to change the fill hose on your
washer the reason why you might have to do this is because the fill hose is damaged or
broken causing water to leak out of it for this repair all we'll be using is a pair of
channel locks
WARNING before doing any repairs please disconnect your power source so this
is the washer we'll be using in this demonstration it's and Amana yours might be a little bit
different than what we have here but the same technique should still apply we're going to
have to turn our washer around make sure you turn your water off and one we've turned our
water off we can use our channel locks to unscrew the water inlet hose from the water
line and you're also going to want to make sure that you have a towel or maybe a bucket
handy because when you do this there is most likely going to be a bit of water still in
that line and it's going to come out once you loosen up the connection just like that
and now we'll just carefully set this down to my bucket and there's that one and we'll
set hat down as well now we'll remove the hose from the back of the washer now you can
grab your new OEM replacement water hoses if you don't have them already you can find
them on our online store this particular pair of hoses is five feet long the next thing
you want to do is just make sure that there's a rubber gasket inside of your new hose if
it doesn't have one for some reason you can get one out of your old hose but these should
all have them included in the bag now we can put our fill hoses on so you see right here
it has the blue which means cold so you're going to plug your hose that you want to be
cold in that blue one tighten it up by hand as much as you can then grab your channel
locks tighten it up the rest of the way same thing with this other hose you have your red
connection here and so your going to just hook up the hose to go to the hot water on
to that tighten it up by hand as much as you can and finish it up with the channel locks
now we'll hook up our fill hose to the water line and we'll again tighten by hand all the
way and you want to make sure that you're hooking up the correct hose so make sure you're
hooking up your hot one like we are right now just make sure where ever it's marked
on the water line that you're hooking it up to the proper connection and now we'll finish
tightening it again with the channel locks now this is our cold water line and we're
hooking it up to our cold water
and once you've hooked up those lines and have them tightened all the way you can turn
your water on and make sure there's no leaks anywhere and once you've done that your repair
is complete
Finally don't forget to plug in your appliance

We want to let you know that the NAD opposes the U.S. Supreme Court Nomination.
The Supreme Court is the "last" stop when it comes to making nationwide decisions;
cases start at lower courts before reaching the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court is occupied by nine justices.
One justice, Anthony Kennedy, recently retired.
The President nominated Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Kennedy.
The U.S. Senate is reviewing the nomination, interviewing Kavanaugh about his background, opinions,
ideas, and history as a judge.
However, many disability rights organizations are now opposing this nomination because Kavanaugh's
previous records, history, and opinions have not been good for the disability community.
These disability rights organizations do not agree that Kavanaugh should become a Supreme Court Justice.
The NAD does not usually get involved in political issues due to our status as a non-profit.
However, given the importance of this issue and with many other disability rights organizations making their
disagreement public, we are joining forces with them.
The NAD's mission is to preserve, protect, and promote the civil, human, and linguistic rights
of deaf and hard of hearing Americans.
Kavanaugh's opinions and history as a judge does not align with our mission and
any decisions he make will affect our civil, human, and linguistic rights.
We must make sure the next Supreme Court Judge understands and protects
our civil, human, and linguistic rights.
Kavanaugh's record as a judge concerns us.
One example of extreme importance involves his opinion on disability employment discrimination under
the ADA and other laws, particularly one case that involved a deaf person.
A deaf man, Adeyemi, sued the D.C. Government for not hiring him for a job position.
Adeymi stated that his qualifications and experience were as good or better than other applicants,
and therefore he should have been hired.
Judge Kavanaugh wrote an opinion stating that Adeyemi did not prove
he is "significantly better qualified" than other applicants.
This means Adeyemi would have had to prove he is much more qualified than the hired persons
and other applicants to prove employment discrimination.
This is a very difficult way to prove discrimination and is not fair.
Deaf people should be able to get jobs based on reasonable standards of comparable qualifications.
Another concern involves another case where the DC Government was sued for allowing doctors
to perform surgeries without permission on people with cognitive disabilities.
At the time, Judge Kavanaugh shared his opinion that the DC Government could indeed permit doctors
to continue the surgeries without permission.
In this case, those people with cognitive disabilities did not have medical decision making authority but
the lawsuit sought to give them the power to question and discuss the implications of the surgery.
Judge Kavanaugh decided that they don't need to be asked.
Another concern about Kavanaugh are his opinions against the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
While there are many views about the ACA, Kavanaugh's strong opposition against the ACA affects the right to
affordable health insurance for many deaf people and people with disabilities.
These are just among the many reasons the NAD is very concerned with the nomination of Kavanaugh
to become a Supreme Court Justice.
We encourage you to contact your Senators right now as they are deciding whether to accept or decline
Kavanaugh's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
We need you to tell both of your two Senators in your state that you oppose Brett Kavanaugh for
the U.S. Supreme Court and ask that they nominate another person.
